Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden In The Rabbit

The first thing I did after the stranger disappeared was lock the restaurant door.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I needed to know nobody else was coming in.

The manager looked confused when I asked him to do it.

"Mr. Cole, is everything all right?"

I looked at Lily standing beside me.

The little girl who had walked into my life carrying a stuffed rabbit and a message from a woman who was supposed to be a stranger.

"No," I said quietly.

"Nothing is all right."

The restaurant had gone silent.

People were pretending not to stare.

They looked at their phones.

They looked at their plates.

But I could feel their eyes on me.

I hated that feeling.

For the first time in years, I didn't control the room.

I didn't control the conversation.

I didn't even understand what was happening.

I looked at Lily.

"Where is your mother?"

Her face changed immediately.

The confidence she had shown moments earlier disappeared.

She looked down.

"She said I wasn't supposed to tell anyone."

"Anyone?"

She nodded.

"Except you."

Those three words bothered me more than anything else.

Except you.

Why me?

I had never met a child named Lily.

I had never known Claire had a daughter.

And yet somehow, this little girl knew my name.

She knew where to find me.

She knew Claire.

I looked at the note again.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Claire Bennett.

The woman I had spent the last six months getting to know.

The woman who had seemed honest.

The woman who had told me she had no secrets.

I remembered our conversations.

The nights we stayed awake talking about our past.

The moments when she looked at me like she wanted to say something.

But always stopped.

I thought she was afraid of commitment.

I thought she was afraid of trusting someone.

I never considered she was hiding an entire part of her life.

I sat back down.

Lily climbed onto the chair across from me.

She placed the rabbit carefully on the table.

The waiter approached slowly.

"Can I get the child anything?"

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

"Hot chocolate."

The waiter walked away.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Lily pushed the rabbit toward me.

"My mom said you would know what to do."

I frowned.

"Your mother knew me?"

She nodded.

"She said you were the only person who could help."

I stared at the rabbit.

"Help with what?"

The little girl didn't answer.

Instead, she reached out and touched the rabbit's missing eye.

"She said the rabbit was safer than a phone."

My entire body went still.

A phone.

A hidden message.

A woman who disappeared.

A child who was sent to find me.

Suddenly, this wasn't about a blind date anymore.

This was something planned.

Something prepared.

Something Claire had expected.

I picked up the rabbit.

It was heavier than it should have been.

I turned it over.

The stitching on the back was uneven.

Someone had repaired it recently.

I looked at Lily.

"Did your mother sew this?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"The bad man."

The restaurant suddenly felt colder.

"Who is the bad man, Lily?"

She looked toward the window.

The rain was still falling.

"He came to our house."

"When?"

"Before we left."

"Left where?"

She looked back at me.

"Everything."

That answer terrified me.

Not because it made sense.

Because it sounded like something an adult would say.

Not a five-year-old.

I carefully opened the torn seam.

Inside was a small plastic container.

My breathing slowed.

I pulled it out.

Lily watched silently.

Inside the container was a tiny silver key.

And a photograph.

I turned the photograph over.

My fingers froze.

It was me.

But I wasn't alone.

The picture showed me standing outside an old building.

Beside me was Claire.

And another person.

A man.

Someone I had never seen before.

But Lily recognized him immediately.

She whispered:

"That's him."

I looked at her.

"Who?"

She pointed at the photograph.

"The man who hurt my mommy."

My hand tightened around the picture.

"How do you know?"

"Because he told me."

My blood went cold.

"What did he tell you?"

Lily looked directly into my eyes.

"He said if Adrian Cole ever found me..."

She stopped.

The silence between us became unbearable.

"What?"

Her voice became almost a whisper.

"He said you were the reason my mommy disappeared."

I couldn't move.

The words hit harder than any accusation I had ever heard.

Me?

The reason Claire disappeared?

Impossible.

I had spent the entire night believing Claire had abandoned me.

But what if that wasn't true?

What if she had been running from something?

What if she had been trying to protect Lily?

I looked at the photograph again.

The old building behind us looked familiar.

I had seen it before.

Years ago.

A place I had tried very hard to forget.

My office.

The key.

The picture.

Claire's handwriting.

Everything was connected.

I reached for my phone.

I needed answers.

I needed to call someone.

But before I could unlock the screen, Lily grabbed my hand.

"Don't call anyone."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because my mommy said they were listening."

A chill ran through me.

"Who?"

She looked afraid again.

"The people who made her disappear."

I stood up.

The chair moved loudly against the floor.

Everyone in the restaurant looked over.

I didn't care.

I needed to leave.

I needed to get Lily somewhere safe.

I grabbed my coat.

"Come with me."

She didn't move.

Instead, she looked behind me.

At the window.

At the reflection.

My instincts reacted before my mind did.

I turned around.

Across the street, through the heavy rain, a black car was parked near the sidewalk.

The headlights were off.

The engine was running.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching.

Lily grabbed my hand.

"That's the car."

My heart started racing.

"What car?"

"The one that followed us."

I looked back at the car.

The driver's door slowly opened.

A man stepped out.

I couldn't see his face.

Only his silhouette.

But then he lifted his phone.

And pointed it directly toward the restaurant.

Toward us.

I grabbed Lily and moved away from the window.

The man outside didn't chase us.

He didn't need to.

Because a second later, my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

My hands went cold.

Because the sender knew exactly where I was.

May you like

The message read:

"Adrian, if you are with Lily, look behind you."
