Chapter 8 - The Night Maria Disappeared

The key opened a nursery.
Not a child's nursery anymore.
Dust covered the furniture.
A wooden crib stood beneath a sheet.
Adrien stared.
"This room has been locked since I was a child."
Eva entered slowly.
"I remember being brought here."
"When?"
"Before your mother officially adopted me."
Maria examined the walls.
Tiny marks showed where pictures had once hung.
Daniel found a loose floorboard.
Beneath it was a box.
Inside were photographs.
Caroline.
Elena.
Victor.
And a young Thomas Reeve.
They had known one another long before Eva's investigation.
One photograph showed all four standing outside a warehouse.
On the back:
APRIL 19, 1986.
The same date engraved on the umbrella.
Eva understood.
"This wasn't just an access code."
Daniel nodded.
"It's the day everything began."
A cassette lay beneath the photographs.
Adrien played it.
Caroline's voice.
Victor, if you find this, it's over.
Everyone exchanged looks.
The recording described a scheme begun by Victor and Reeve in the 1980s.
Caroline discovered it.
So did Elena.
Caroline helped Elena escape.
But Victor found out.
He forced Caroline into silence by threatening Adrien.
Maria looked at him.
"You were a child."
"That's why it worked."
Caroline had spent years secretly gathering evidence.
When Eva grew older, Caroline gave her clues.
Eva believed she had discovered the conspiracy herself.
In reality, Caroline had guided her.
Then Caroline disappeared.
Victor told everyone she was dead.
"Why stay hidden?" Adrien asked.
The recording answered.
Because Victor told me that if I ever came back, he would kill my son.
Adrien sat down.
Maria watched him absorb another lifetime of lies.
Then Caroline's voice changed.
Eva, if you're hearing this, forgive me.
I used your courage because mine failed.
But there is one thing Victor never learned.
Thomas Reeve wasn't working for Victor.
Victor was working for Thomas.
Daniel paused the tape.
"So Reeve was behind it."
Eva shook her head.
"Then why is Caroline contacting us now?"
Maria's phone vibrated.
A text from Lily's babysitter.
LILY IS FINE. SHE'S ASLEEP.
Then another.
A photograph.
Lily sleeping.
Maria relaxed.
Until she noticed the curtain.
Wrong color.
Lily wasn't at home.
Maria called.
No answer.
She ran downstairs.
Adrien followed.
"Maria."
"Someone has Lily again."
They drove to Maria's apartment.
Empty.
The babysitter lay unconscious but breathing in the hallway.
Daniel called emergency services.
Maria's phone rang.
Caroline.
"Come to me."
"Where's my daughter?"
"Safe."
"If you hurt her—"
"I won't."
"Why should I believe you?"
"Because I spent my entire life trying to protect children from Victor."
"Then give me mine."
"Come alone."
The address was the abandoned Voss family lake house.
Maria did something everyone would later criticize.
She went.
Alone.
She left her phone in Adrien's car and took a taxi, hoping the others wouldn't track her quickly enough to stop her.
The lake house was dark.
Inside, Lily sat at a kitchen table drinking hot chocolate.
"Mama!"
Maria ran to her.
She checked every inch.
No injuries.
Caroline Voss stepped from the shadows.
She was seventy-two.
Elegant.
Fragile.
Nothing like the monster Maria had imagined.
"You kidnapped my daughter."
"I rescued her."
"From whom?"
"Thomas Reeve."
"He's in custody."
"Not anymore."
Maria froze.
"He escaped?"
"With help."
Caroline sat.
"Thomas has people everywhere."
"Why bring Lily here?"
"Because he believes she knows where the final evidence is."
"She's six."
"Children see things adults overlook."
Maria thought of the ring.
The umbrella.
The letters.
"Why contact Adrien?"
"Because I am dying."
Maria looked at her.
Caroline's hands trembled.
"I have weeks. Maybe days."
"And you decided now was the time for honesty?"
"Yes."
"That's convenient."
"I deserve that."
Maria kept Lily against her.
Caroline placed a folder on the table.
"This clears Adrien."
"Of what?"
"Everything Victor did using his son's name."
Maria opened it.
Signatures.
Account records.
Recordings.
Proof that Adrien had inherited companies contaminated by crimes committed before he controlled them.
"Why didn't you give this to investigators?"
"Because Thomas would destroy it."
"Then why me?"
"Because nobody watches the maid."
Maria stared at her.
Caroline smiled sadly.
"They watched Adrien. Eva. Gabriel. Lawyers. Agents. Executives. Nobody paid attention to the woman folding towels."
Maria almost smiled despite herself.
"People make that mistake."
"I know."
Headlights swept across the window.
Caroline's face changed.
"He's here."
Maria grabbed Lily.
"Back door?"
"Cellar."
They ran.
A car door slammed outside.
Caroline opened the cellar.
"Go."
Maria stopped.
"Come with us."
"I'll slow you down."
"Come."
Caroline hesitated.
Maria grabbed her hand.
"No more people disappearing for everyone else's protection."
They descended together.
The cellar tunnel led toward the lake.
Halfway through, footsteps entered behind them.
Lily began crying.
Maria carried her.
Caroline struggled to breathe.
Then a flashlight appeared ahead.
Maria stopped.
Someone was coming from the opposite direction.
They were trapped.
Lily whispered, "Mama."
The figure stepped into the light.
Daniel.
Maria almost collapsed.
"How did you find us?"
"Adrien knew about the tunnel."
Adrien appeared behind him.
"Move."
They emerged near the boathouse.
Police vehicles surrounded the property.
Thomas Reeve had not arrived.
The headlights belonged to federal agents.
Caroline stared.
"You knew?"
Adrien nodded.
"I knew Maria would come here."
Maria frowned.
"You let me?"
"I've learned not to tell Delgado women what they can and can't do."
"Smart."
For one moment, they smiled.
Then an agent approached.
"Mr. Voss."
"What?"
"We found Reeve."
"Where?"
The agent hesitated.
"At your estate."
Adrien's smile vanished.
"Why?"
"He wasn't looking for you."
"Then what?"
The agent held up a photograph taken from security footage.
Reeve stood inside the west study.
In his hand was Eva's original letter.
And behind him stood Eva herself.
Adrien stared.
The timestamp was ten minutes ago.
His phone rang.
Eva's number.
He answered.
Thomas Reeve spoke.
"Bring Caroline."
Adrien's eyes hardened.
"Let Eva go."
Reeve laughed.
"Come home, Adrien."
May you like
Then Eva screamed.
The call ended.
