Chapter 5 - The Secret Lily's Father Left Behind

Adrien grabbed Maria and pulled her aside.
A gunshot did not follow.
Neither did an attack.
Mrs. Harris stood behind them.
She was holding Lily's pink coat.
Maria stared.
"Where's Lily?"
Mrs. Harris was crying.
"I'm sorry."
Adrien moved toward her.
"Where is she?"
"Victor's people came to the house."
Maria's knees weakened.
"No."
"I tried."
"Where is my daughter?"
"They took her."
Daniel surged forward.
"Who?"
Mrs. Harris looked at him.
Then at the umbrella.
"The man Eva warned you about."
Adrien raised the fabric again.
The hidden sentence was now complete.
IF VICTOR IS ALIVE, DO NOT TRUST THOMAS REEVE.
Daniel froze.
Maria saw recognition.
"Who is Thomas Reeve?"
Adrien answered.
"My father's oldest business partner."
Daniel shook his head.
"No. More than that."
"What?"
"He was the federal investigator Eva planned to meet."
Adrien stared.
"The investigator?"
"He was playing both sides."
Maria grabbed Daniel.
"Where would he take Lily?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"The waterfront."
Adrien was already moving.
Police officers entered the cemetery, but Adrien ignored their questions.
Daniel didn't.
"We need them."
Adrien turned.
"If Reeve has people inside law enforcement—"
"We don't know who."
"Exactly."
Daniel stepped closer.
"I spent seven years running because I tried doing this alone. I'm done running."
Maria looked at him.
Seven years.
The anger returned.
"You don't get to make that sound noble."
Daniel absorbed it.
"I know."
"You abandoned us."
"I protected you."
"You don't know what those years were like."
"No."
His voice broke.
"I only know what it cost me to watch from a distance."
Maria stared.
"What?"
Daniel reached into his shirt.
He wore a small waterproof pouch.
Inside were photographs.
Lily at two.
Lily at three.
Her first day of school.
Maria leaving their apartment.
Maria working at the Voss estate.
"You watched us?"
"Whenever I could."
"Why didn't you come home?"
"Because Reeve was watching too."
Daniel showed her another photograph.
A man sat in a parked car across from Lily's school.
Thomas Reeve.
Maria felt sick.
"He knew?"
"He suspected I was alive. He knew Eva had given me something."
"The location?"
Daniel nodded.
"Eva hid the real ledger in a safe-deposit box opened under her mother's identity."
"April nineteenth, 1986."
"The date Elena Mercer legally changed her name."
Adrien understood.
"The numbers are part of the access code."
"Yes."
"Where's the box?"
"Lake Shore Mutual."
Adrien pulled out his phone.
Daniel stopped him.
"That's what Reeve wants."
"Then why take Lily?"
"Leverage."
Maria's voice sharpened.
"Stop talking about leverage. Tell me how to get my daughter."
Daniel met her eyes.
"We give him what he thinks he wants."
They returned to the estate with police securing the grounds.
Security footage showed Lily being taken through the service entrance by a man wearing an electrician's uniform.
She wasn't dragged.
He had told her Maria was waiting outside.
Maria could barely watch.
Adrien stopped the video.
"We find the ledger."
Daniel nodded.
At 2:17 a.m., they reached Lake Shore Mutual.
Adrien's attorney arranged emergency access with federal agents who were now involved.
The safe-deposit box was opened.
Inside was no ledger.
Only a cassette tape.
And a child's drawing.
Adrien picked it up.
A blue umbrella.
Two stick figures beneath it.
One labeled EVA.
The other ADRIEN.
Daniel inserted the cassette into an old player brought from Eva's room.
Static.
Then Eva's voice.
Adrien sat down.
"Adrien, if you're hearing this, I probably failed."
His eyes closed.
"I need you to know Gabriel didn't betray me. He tried to stop me because he knew how dangerous this was. Don't hate him for surviving."
Daniel lowered his head.
Eva continued.
"The ledger isn't paper. It never was. It's a digital record. Gabriel has half the encryption key. The other half is somewhere Victor would never willingly look."
Adrien whispered, "Where?"
Eva's recorded voice answered.
"With the person he spent his entire life refusing to see."
The tape clicked.
Then one final sentence.
"Ask Maria Delgado."
Everyone looked at Maria.
She stared at the machine.
"That's impossible."
Daniel looked equally stunned.
"Eva died years before I met Maria."
Adrien replayed it.
Ask Maria Delgado.
Same words.
Same name.
Maria backed away.
"I didn't know her."
Daniel stared at his wife.
Then something changed in his face.
"Your mother."
Maria froze.
"What about her?"
"What was her maiden name?"
"Mercer."
Adrien stood.
Maria stared at Daniel.
"You knew?"
"Not when we met."
"My mother's name was Sofia Mercer."
Daniel looked shaken.
"Elena Mercer had a younger sister."
Maria slowly understood.
"My mother."
Daniel nodded.
Maria's childhood had been full of unexplained silences.
Her mother refused to discuss family.
No grandparents.
No cousins.
No photographs before age twenty.
"Eva was my cousin."
"Yes."
Adrien looked toward the cassette.
"Which means Victor refused to see..."
"Maria's mother," Daniel said.
They drove to Maria's apartment.
She hadn't touched her mother's belongings since Sofia died three years earlier.
A box remained beneath her bed.
Inside were old letters.
Photographs.
And a Bible.
Maria opened it.
A metal flash drive had been cut into the binding.
Daniel exhaled.
"That's it."
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice.
Thomas Reeve.
"You found it."
Maria grabbed the phone.
"Where is Lily?"
"Safe."
"Let me hear her."
A pause.
Then—
"Mama?"
Maria nearly collapsed.
"I'm here, baby."
"I'm scared."
"I know. I'm coming."
"The man says—"
The phone was pulled away.
Reeve returned.
"Pier Nineteen. Bring the drive and the umbrella."
"Why the umbrella?"
"Sentiment."
The line went dead.
Adrien looked at Maria.
Daniel took the flash drive.
"We go together."
Maria nodded.
Adrien looked toward the window.
Dawn was still hours away.
At Pier Nineteen, one warehouse light burned.
They entered.
Lily sat at a table.
Unhurt.
Thomas Reeve stood beside her.
Victor Voss stood across the room.
Adrien stopped.
Victor smiled.
"Family reunion."
Reeve extended his hand.
"The drive."
Daniel held it up.
"Lily first."
Reeve shook his head.
Then Lily suddenly looked behind him.
Her eyes widened.
"Mama."
Maria followed her gaze.
A second door was opening.
A woman stepped into the warehouse.
May you like
Adrien whispered a name he had not spoken in fourteen years.
"Eva?"
