Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Voss Empire

The woman stepped into the light.
Adrien couldn't move.
She was older than the woman in the photographs.
A pale scar ran from her temple toward her hairline.
But the eyes were the same.
"Eva?"
She looked at him.
"Hello, little brother."
Victor swore.
Thomas Reeve turned toward her.
"You were supposed to stay hidden."
Eva smiled without warmth.
"So were you."
Adrien crossed the warehouse.
He stopped inches from her.
His hands lifted as though he wanted to touch her but didn't trust his own eyes.
"You're alive."
"Yes."
"Fourteen years."
"I know."
He slapped her.
Maria gasped.
Eva didn't react.
Adrien immediately looked horrified at himself.
Then he pulled his sister into his arms.
She held him.
For several seconds, the warehouse disappeared around them.
Adrien's shoulders shook.
Eva whispered something Maria couldn't hear.
Then Adrien stepped back.
"Why?"
"Because Victor ordered my death."
Adrien looked at his father.
Victor said nothing.
Eva continued.
"The crash was real. I survived. Gabriel found me before Victor's people did."
Daniel nodded.
"We hid her."
Maria stared at her husband.
"You knew she was alive too?"
"For three weeks. Then she disappeared from me."
Eva looked at him.
"I had to."
"Everyone keeps saying that," Maria snapped. "Everyone keeps disappearing to protect everyone else."
Eva looked ashamed.
"You're right."
Reeve interrupted.
"Touching. Give me the drive."
Eva laughed.
"You still don't understand."
Reeve's expression tightened.
"The drive is useless without the encryption key."
"Which I have."
Victor stared at her.
"You?"
Eva nodded.
"You spent fourteen years looking for a ledger that could destroy you. I spent fourteen years making sure you never found the one thing that could open it."
Adrien looked at Lily.
"Let the child go."
Victor shook his head.
"Not until this ends."
Lily suddenly stood.
Thomas reached for her.
She ducked beneath his arm.
Maria ran.
"Lily!"
The child sprinted across the warehouse.
Adrien stepped between her and Reeve.
Daniel joined him.
Maria reached Lily and pulled her close.
Reeve's control began cracking.
"Enough."
Federal agents entered from three doors.
"Nobody move."
Victor stared at Eva.
"You planned this."
"Of course."
Reeve moved toward a side exit.
Agents blocked him.
Within minutes, both men were restrained.
No gunfire.
No dramatic violence.
Just the quiet ending of a conspiracy that had survived because everyone involved believed fear was stronger than truth.
Victor looked at Adrien.
"You think this changes what you are?"
Adrien stared at his father.
"Yes."
Victor laughed.
"You're my son."
"That's biology."
Adrien looked at Eva.
"Family is something else."
Victor was taken away.
Reeve followed.
Maria thought the nightmare was over.
It wasn't.
Federal agents examined the flash drive.
The encrypted files contained decades of records.
Bribes.
Shell companies.
Fraud.
Blackmail.
And evidence connecting Victor and Reeve to Eva's attempted murder.
But there was another problem.
Adrien's name appeared throughout the records.
An agent named Rebecca Shaw closed her laptop.
"Mr. Voss, we need you to come with us."
Eva stepped forward.
"He didn't know."
"That will need to be established."
Adrien nodded.
"I'll cooperate."
Maria looked at him.
"You could lose everything."
He glanced at Lily.
"Maybe some things should be lost."
Lily tugged his jacket.
"Are you going away?"
"For a little while."
"Because you're bad?"
The adults fell silent.
Adrien crouched.
"I've made mistakes."
"Did you hurt my mama?"
"No."
"Did you hurt Daddy?"
"No."
"Did you hurt me?"
"No."
"Then come back when you're done."
Adrien smiled sadly.
"I'll do my best."
Lily frowned.
"What did I tell you about trying?"
That finally made him laugh.
"I'll come back."
Agents escorted him away.
Eva watched.
Maria stood beside her.
"You love him."
"More than anything."
"Then why leave him alone for fourteen years?"
Eva looked toward the departing vehicle.
"Because I thought being near him would get him killed."
Maria understood the reasoning.
She also understood the damage.
"Sometimes protecting people from the truth hurts them too."
Eva nodded.
"I know that now."
Daniel heard.
Maria looked at him.
He lowered his eyes.
They had a great deal to discuss.
Over the next three days, the Voss empire began unraveling.
News outlets filled the street.
Investigators entered offices.
Executives resigned.
Adrien remained in federal custody voluntarily while his attorneys sorted through the evidence.
Maria took Lily home.
Daniel slept on the couch.
Not because Maria hated him.
Because seven years could not be repaired by one embrace in a cemetery.
On the third night, Daniel stood in the kitchen.
"I'll leave if you want."
Maria looked at him.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"That's always your answer."
He flinched.
"Maria."
"You don't get to disappear again."
"I wasn't planning—"
"If we don't survive this, fine. But you will be Lily's father. Every birthday. Every school meeting. Every fever. Every boring Tuesday. You understand?"
Tears filled his eyes.
"Yes."
"And you don't get forgiveness because you had good reasons."
"I know."
"You earn it."
"I will."
Maria nodded.
It wasn't reconciliation.
But it was a beginning.
Her phone rang.
Eva.
"Maria, turn on the news."
She did.
A reporter stood outside the federal courthouse.
Adrien had been released.
But the reporter wasn't discussing his release.
She was discussing something found in the Voss records.
A death certificate.
Maria turned up the volume.
The certificate belonged to Elena Mercer.
Eva's mother.
The date was thirty-five years earlier.
The problem was that federal investigators had just discovered evidence Elena had lived for another twenty years.
Maria looked at Daniel.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
An elderly woman sat beside a window.
Around her neck hung a crescent moon necklace.
Beneath the photograph were six words.
SHE KNOWS WHY VICTOR CHOSE MARIA.
Maria stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
An address.
May you like
And beneath it:
COME ALONE.
