Chapter 6 - The Secret That Eleanor Buried

The hidden passage door opened from the inside.
Someone was there.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The security officer raised his flashlight and aimed it toward the darkness.
"Show yourself."
No answer.
Only silence.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming closer.
My heart was pounding.
After everything I had discovered, I thought nothing could surprise me anymore.
I was wrong.
A man stepped out of the hidden passage.
Older.
Tired.
His clothes were simple.
His face showed years of fear.
But the moment I saw him...
I knew him.
Not because I had met him recently.
Because I had seen his name thousands of times.
On company reports.
On old documents.
On the papers Daniel tried to hide.
"Thomas..."
Eleanor whispered.
The man's eyes moved toward her.
"You survived."
The room became frozen.
My lawyer looked confused.
"Who is Thomas?"
I stared at the man.
Because I knew exactly who he was.
Thomas Reed.
The former chief financial officer of Whitmore International.
The man who disappeared eight years ago.
The man Daniel blamed for the missing money.
The man everyone believed had escaped after stealing millions from the company.
But now he was standing inside a hidden passage in my building.
Alive.
I looked at Daniel.
And Daniel looked like he wanted to run.
"Daniel."
My voice was quiet.
"Tell me this is not what it looks like."
My brother didn't answer.
Thomas looked at him.
"You still haven't changed."
Daniel's face tightened.
"You should have stayed hidden."
The words shocked everyone.
Because Daniel had just admitted something.
He knew Thomas was alive.
My lawyer immediately stepped forward.
"Mr. Whitmore, I think we need to call the authorities."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
Thomas looked at me.
"Because if you call them now, the person who actually controlled everything will disappear."
I stared at him.
"What are you talking about?"
Thomas walked toward the desk.
He looked exhausted.
"I spent eight years waiting for this moment."
He looked at Eleanor.
"You found him."
Eleanor nodded.
"I knew he would eventually find the room."
I felt anger rising.
"You both knew?"
They looked at me.
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice became colder.
"I am tired of discovering that everyone knew something except me."
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could deny it.
Eleanor stepped closer.
"Alexander, I wanted to tell you."
"But you didn't."
Her eyes filled with pain.
"I was trying to protect you."
I looked at her.
"Protect me?"
I pointed toward the documents.
"By letting me believe you were dead?"
She looked down.
"I thought if they believed you had lost me, they would stop looking."
"Who?"
She hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than the answer.
"People who were more powerful than Daniel."
The room became silent.
I looked at Thomas.
"Start explaining."
Thomas opened the folder that remained on the desk.
Inside were dozens of pages.
"I was Daniel's accountant before I became chief financial officer."
He placed a document in front of me.
"At first, I thought the missing money was just corruption."
I looked at the numbers.
Millions.
Transferred through different companies.
Hidden accounts.
Fake contracts.
"But then I discovered something worse."
Thomas looked at Eleanor.
"He wasn't stealing alone."
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
My brother said nothing.
Thomas continued.
"The money was being moved to fund a private operation."
"What operation?"
Thomas looked at me.
"One designed to remove you."
The words hit me.
I felt a strange calm.
Because deep down...
I already knew.
The accident.
The inheritance case.
The lies.
Everything connected.
Daniel finally spoke.
"You don't know what you're saying."
Thomas turned toward him.
"I know exactly what I'm saying."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You disappeared because you were guilty."
Thomas laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
"No."
He reached into his coat.
And pulled out an old phone.
"This is why I disappeared."
He placed it on the desk.
"This contains the last conversation I had before I ran."
The security officer picked it up.
"It still works?"
Thomas nodded.
"Because I never wanted anyone to find it."
He pressed a button.
The room filled with static.
Then a voice.
Daniel's voice.
Eight years younger.
Everyone froze.
The recording played.
"You need to understand, Thomas. Alexander cannot remain in control."
My blood went cold.
Daniel's voice continued.
"He trusts too easily."
Another voice appeared.
A voice I did not recognize.
"Then make sure he has no choice."
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at me.
"That's not what you think."
I looked at him.
For years, I defended him.
For years, I told people my brother was misunderstood.
But now...
I had heard his voice.
Planning against me.
The judge.
The inheritance.
The accident.
Everything.
My hands trembled.
"Who was the other person?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Eleanor.
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Terrified.
"Who was he?"
Eleanor slowly walked toward the desk.
She opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
She placed it in front of me.
It showed Daniel standing beside another man.
A powerful businessman.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Because his name was everywhere.
Someone who had been my biggest competitor for twenty years.
Someone who had publicly offered to buy my company.
Someone who had always acted like my enemy.
But the photograph was not the shocking part.
The date was.
The picture was taken three months before my accident.
My eyes moved to Eleanor.
"You knew?"
She nodded.
"I found this the night before I disappeared."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Her voice broke.
"Because the man in that picture was not just Daniel's partner."
A pause.
"He was your friend."
I looked at the photograph again.
And felt the room spin.
Because the man standing beside Daniel...
Was someone who had visited my hospital room after the accident.
Someone who held my hand and told me he was praying for my recovery.
Someone I trusted completely.
My lawyer whispered:
"Alexander..."
I couldn't answer.
Thomas suddenly looked toward the hallway.
His expression changed.
"What is it?"
He didn't respond.
He walked toward the office door.
The security officer followed.
Then Thomas stopped.
There was a small sound outside.
A phone vibrating.
Everyone looked at each other.
The sound came from the hidden passage.
Thomas slowly entered the darkness.
Then he returned holding a phone.
Not his.
Not Daniel's.
An unknown phone.
The screen was already open.
One message was displayed.
A single sentence.
My blood turned cold.
Because the message was addressed to Eleanor.
May you like
And it said:
"I know you found him. Now tell Alexander the truth about who his real enemy is..."
