Chapter 4 - The Person Behind the Locked Cabinet

The cabinet door clicked from the inside.
Everyone froze.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The hidden office that had been silent for eight years suddenly felt alive.
I stared at the old metal cabinet in the corner.
The same cabinet Lily had warned us about.
The same cabinet Eleanor had apparently hidden something inside.
Or someone.
My lawyer slowly stepped backward.
"Alexander..."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Tell me you heard that."
I looked at him.
"I heard it."
The security officer immediately reached for his radio.
But Lily grabbed my wheelchair handle.
"Don't."
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl who had walked into a courtroom and challenged my brother was now standing there terrified.
"Why not?" I asked.
Her eyes stayed on the cabinet.
"Because my mother said if the cabinet opens before the right person is ready..."
She stopped.
I waited.
"What?"
Lily swallowed.
"Something bad happens."
The security officer looked confused.
"Something bad?"
Lily nodded.
"She said there were people who would do anything to keep that cabinet closed."
The room became silent again.
I looked at the cabinet.
For years, I had searched for answers.
I blamed myself.
I blamed fate.
I blamed the accident.
But standing there, looking at a locked cabinet that reacted like someone was inside...
I realized I had been searching in the wrong place.
The truth had never disappeared.
Someone had buried it.
The security officer approached carefully.
"Mr. Whitmore, we need to open this."
I nodded.
Slowly, he unlocked the cabinet.
The door opened.
Empty.
At first.
Everyone stared.
There was nothing inside except old files.
Then Lily stepped closer.
"No."
Her voice changed.
"What?"
She pointed toward the back wall.
"There is another door."
The security officer moved the files aside.
Behind them was a small hidden compartment.
A second lock.
A second secret.
My heart began racing.
Because I knew that design.
Eleanor loved hidden compartments.
She once told me:
"The safest place for a secret is somewhere everyone thinks is impossible."
The security officer examined the lock.
"We need another key."
I looked at Lily.
She slowly reached into her purple backpack.
And removed the silver key.
Nobody spoke.
She placed it into the lock.
It fit perfectly.
The moment the key turned, I felt like I was stepping back eight years.
Back to the night I lost everything.
The compartment opened.
Inside was a small black box.
Nothing else.
No documents.
No explanation.
Just a box.
The security officer lifted it carefully.
"It looks like a recording device."
My lawyer looked at me.
"Alexander..."
I knew.
Before anyone opened it.
I knew Eleanor had left something for me.
Something she never got the chance to say.
The security officer placed the box on the desk.
There was a small button on top.
A label was attached.
My name.
Alexander.
My hands started shaking.
I reached toward it.
But before I pressed the button, Daniel's voice came from the doorway.
"Don't."
Everyone turned.
My brother stood there.
Alone.
No lawyer.
No confident smile.
No powerful businessman pretending he controlled the situation.
Just Daniel.
And for the first time in my life...
He looked afraid.
I stared at him.
"How did you get here?"
He ignored the question.
"Alexander, you don't understand what you're about to open."
I looked at the box.
Then back at him.
"You knew this was here."
Daniel said nothing.
That was enough.
"You knew."
His jaw tightened.
"I knew Eleanor was hiding something."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You knew exactly what she was hiding."
Daniel stepped into the room.
"She was paranoid."
My expression changed.
Because that was the same word he had used eight years ago.
The same word everyone repeated.
Eleanor was paranoid.
Eleanor imagined things.
Eleanor was stressed.
But now I knew.
Those words had come from one person first.
Daniel.
The judge.
The court.
The employees.
Everyone had repeated his story.
Daniel looked at Lily.
And something changed.
His face became colder.
"You shouldn't have brought her here."
Lily moved closer to me.
I noticed.
She was scared.
But she did not run.
"Who is she, Daniel?"
My brother looked at the floor.
"Alexander..."
"Who is Lily?"
Silence.
Then Daniel said something I never expected.
"She's the reason Eleanor died."
The room went completely still.
My chest tightened.
"What did you say?"
My voice was low.
Daniel looked at me.
"I didn't mean it like that."
"Then explain."
He looked toward Lily.
"Her mother caused problems Eleanor couldn't control."
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
"My mother didn't do anything wrong."
Daniel ignored her.
"Claire found information she should never have found."
There it was.
A confession.
Not complete.
But enough.
I moved closer.
"What information?"
Daniel looked away.
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
His answer was quiet.
"Because if you know the truth, you won't just lose your company."
A pause.
"You'll lose everyone who helped hide it."
My lawyer stepped forward.
"Are you threatening him?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He looked at me.
"I'm warning him."
I stared at my brother.
The man who had spent months trying to take my fortune.
The man who claimed he wanted to protect me.
Now he was standing in Eleanor's hidden office, telling me not to uncover the truth.
I looked at the black box.
Then pressed the button.
A small light turned on.
A recording began.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A woman's voice.
"Eleanor Whitmore."
My entire body froze.
It was her.
Eight years disappeared instantly.
Her voice.
Her breathing.
Her words.
Everything.
"If you are hearing this, Alexander, then I failed."
I closed my eyes.
My hands gripped the wheelchair.
"No..."
The recording continued.
"I wanted to tell you myself, but I realized too late that I was being watched."
Daniel looked away.
My lawyer stared at him.
Eleanor continued.
"The person who betrayed me was not a stranger."
A pause.
A long one.
Then:
"It was someone who sat beside me every day."
My heart sank.
Because I knew.
She was talking about someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone inside our family.
The recording continued.
"I found proof that someone had been moving money from the company."
Daniel's expression changed.
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
"I also found proof that the accident that almost killed Alexander was not an accident."
The room exploded into silence.
I stopped breathing.
My accident.
The accident that changed my life.
The accident everyone called bad luck.
Daniel looked at me.
"Alexander..."
I ignored him.
The recording continued.
"But there is something worse."
Eleanor's voice became softer.
"Someone helped him."
I felt cold.
Someone helped him.
Not alone.
Another person.
Another secret.
Then the recording ended.
Everyone stood frozen.
Nobody knew what to say.
Until Lily whispered:
"My mother told me there was one more file."
I looked at her.
"Where?"
She pointed toward the desk.
"Underneath."
The security officer checked immediately.
A hidden drawer opened.
Inside was a single folder.
My name was written on it.
But beneath my name was another name.
A name I had not heard in eight years.
A name Daniel had told me was gone forever.
I reached for the folder.
My fingers touched the cover.
Then Lily looked at the hallway behind us.
Her face suddenly changed.
"What is it?"
She whispered:
"Someone else is here."
Everyone turned.
The lights in the hidden office flickered.
Then a woman's voice came from the darkness outside the door.
"Alexander..."
My blood went cold.
Because I knew that voice.
It was impossible.
May you like
The woman stepped closer.
And she said my name again.
