Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The voice came from the hallway.
"Alexander..."
My entire body froze.
I knew that voice.
Not because I heard it yesterday.
Not because I heard it recently.
Because I spent eight years wishing I could hear it one more time.
Eleanor.
My wife.
The woman everyone told me I had lost.
The woman whose funeral I attended.
The woman whose absence had changed every part of my life.
My lawyer looked at me.
"Alexander?"
I could not answer.
The security officer slowly reached toward his radio.
Daniel stepped backward.
And for the first time since I had known him...
My brother looked completely terrified.
A woman stepped into the doorway.
She was older.
Her hair was different.
Her face had changed.
But her eyes...
Those eyes were impossible to forget.
"Alexander."
My hands started shaking.
"No."
The word escaped my mouth.
The woman stopped.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I know what you're thinking."
I stared at her.
"You can't be here."
Her expression broke.
"I know."
Nobody spoke.
The hidden office became completely silent.
Even the sound of the city outside disappeared.
Because the impossible was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Real.
Breathing.
My wife.
The woman I buried.
Daniel suddenly spoke.
"She's not who you think she is."
I turned toward him.
And something inside me snapped.
"Not another lie."
My voice was cold.
"Not today."
Daniel opened his mouth.
But he stopped.
Because he knew.
The time when I believed him was over.
The woman stepped closer.
"I never wanted you to find out this way."
I stared at her.
"Then tell me how I was supposed to find out."
She lowered her eyes.
"I tried."
"Eight years ago?"
She nodded.
My chest tightened.
"Where were you?"
The question I had carried for years finally came out.
"Where were you when I was sitting in a hospital bed believing my wife was dead?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to survive."
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at her.
"Survive from what?"
She looked at the black box on the desk.
Then at the folder with my name.
"From the same people who wanted you to believe I was gone."
The room became colder.
My lawyer stepped forward.
"Who are you exactly?"
The woman looked at him.
Then at me.
"My name is Eleanor Whitmore."
Nobody moved.
The security officer looked confused.
"But the records..."
"I know."
She interrupted.
"The records say I died."
I felt my heart pounding.
"Because someone made sure they did."
Daniel suddenly moved toward the door.
The security officer immediately blocked him.
"Don't."
Daniel stopped.
His face was full of anger now.
Not fear.
Anger.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
I looked at him.
"No."
I shook my head.
"I finally understand."
Daniel stared at me.
"Eleanor is lying."
She looked at him.
"Still protecting yourself?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"You disappeared."
"Because you gave me no choice."
The words hit the room like a weapon.
My eyes moved between them.
"You two knew each other."
Neither answered.
That was the answer.
I felt betrayed all over again.
Not because Eleanor was alive.
Because everyone had been holding pieces of the truth while I lived inside a lie.
I looked at Eleanor.
"Start from the beginning."
She took a deep breath.
"Eight years ago, I discovered Daniel had been moving company funds."
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Eleanor ignored him.
"I found hidden accounts."
She looked at me.
"Accounts connected to people inside Whitmore International."
My hands tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried."
Her voice broke.
"But before I could, your accident happened."
The room went quiet.
The accident.
The word still hurt.
I remembered the night.
The rain.
The road.
The truck.
The hospital.
The doctors telling me I might never walk again.
Everyone said it was random.
Bad luck.
A terrible moment.
But Eleanor looked at me with sadness.
"It wasn't random."
I already knew.
But hearing it from her made it real.
"Who did it?"
She looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
My blood ran cold.
"Daniel?"
My brother finally spoke.
"Alexander, don't do this."
"Answer me."
He stayed silent.
And silence was enough.
I felt something break inside me.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
Because even after everything...
A part of me still hoped he was innocent.
Eleanor walked toward the desk.
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Messages.
Evidence.
She placed them one by one.
"Your brother was not working alone."
I looked at her.
"Who helped him?"
She hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
"Someone close to you."
My lawyer frowned.
"How close?"
Eleanor looked at me.
"Closer than you realize."
Before I could ask another question, the lights suddenly went out.
The hidden office became completely dark.
Someone cursed.
The security officer turned on his flashlight.
"Everyone stay where you are."
I heard movement.
A chair moved.
A drawer slammed.
Then silence.
The emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Dim.
Everyone looked around.
The folder was gone.
The evidence.
Everything.
Gone.
Daniel was still standing near the door.
The security officer looked confused.
"No one left the room."
I looked at Eleanor.
Her face had changed.
She was scared.
Not surprised.
Scared.
"Alexander..."
"What?"
She looked toward the wall.
"The person who took those files..."
She whispered.
"They were never outside."
Everyone followed her eyes.
Behind the old bookshelf was a narrow passage.
A hidden passage.
My heart sank.
Another secret.
Another thing I never knew existed inside my own company.
The security officer moved toward it.
But Eleanor stopped him.
"No."
"Why?"
Her voice became quiet.
"Because that's how they got in."
I stared at the opening.
Eight years of lies.
Eight years of missing answers.
All connected to this building.
My building.
My family.
My wife.
My brother.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone looked at me.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then a voice.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that should not have existed.
"Alexander..."
I froze.
The voice continued.
"You found Eleanor."
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then:
"The person who knows why she had to disappear."
The call ended.
May you like
At the exact same moment, the hidden passage door slowly opened from the inside.
And someone whispered my name.
