Chapter 9 - The Room Where the Truth Was Buried

The key was smaller than I expected.

That was the first thing I noticed.

After everything we had discovered, after the hidden chamber, the forgotten documents, the old recordings, and the secrets that had survived for sixty years...

I expected something larger.

Something dramatic.

Something that looked important.

Instead, it was a tiny piece of metal resting in Lorenzo’s hand.

Almost ordinary.

But that was exactly what made it frightening.

Because my father had always believed the most important things were usually the easiest to overlook.

The hidden details.

The forgotten names.

The small things everyone ignored.

Lorenzo turned the key beneath the red emergency light.

The crown symbol engraved into the metal reflected faintly.

“The last room,” he repeated.

Sebastian nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you know where it is?”

The old butler looked toward the dark corridor.

“I know where Antonio wanted it to be found.”

That answer immediately caught Lorenzo’s attention.

“Not where it is?”

Sebastian hesitated.

“No.”

The silence returned.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

The Duca family had been searching for something that had never been meant to be discovered easily.

Not by force.

Not by money.

Not by power.

Only by someone who understood the clues.

The bird.

The star.

The crown.

Three symbols.

Three steps.

A path created by people who knew the truth would be dangerous.

Alberto carefully placed the documents back into the metal box.

“We should leave this chamber.”

Nobody moved.

Lorenzo looked at him.

“Why?”

The attorney glanced toward the ceiling.

“Because someone turned off the power.”

That changed everything.

Until that moment, they had been focused on the past.

The secrets.

The betrayal.

The hidden rooms.

But the power outage was happening now.

Someone had interfered with them in the present.

Lorenzo looked toward the entrance.

“Who has access to the security system?”

Sebastian answered immediately.

“Family members. Senior staff. A few security personnel.”

“Marco.”

Nobody said the name.

But everyone thought it.

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“We find him.”

I looked down at Emma.

She was staring at the key.

Not afraid.

Thinking.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

She touched the crown.

“Grandpa didn’t like crowns.”

The comment surprised everyone.

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Why?”

She shrugged.

“He said crowns make people forget they are people.”

Nobody spoke.

Because somehow, a three-year-old child had summarized the entire Duca family problem better than anyone else.

Power.

Control.

Pride.

Things that could turn a family into enemies.

Sebastian looked at Lorenzo.

“Thomas understood your grandfather better than most people.”

Lorenzo looked at the key.

“Then why didn’t he tell my father?”

“Because your father was not the person he needed to protect.”

The answer surprised everyone.

“Who was?”

Sebastian looked at Emma.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“My daughter?”

Sebastian nodded.

“Thomas believed the truth would eventually destroy anyone who carried it.”

A pause.

“But he also believed the truth needed someone innocent enough to use it correctly.”

Lorenzo looked at Emma.

The little girl holding a broken teddy bear.

The little girl who had opened doors powerful men could not.

For the first time, I realized something.

My father had not hidden the truth from me because he did not trust me.

He had hidden it because he knew I would protect Emma.

He had built a path.

Not for revenge.

For survival.

“Where is the last room?” Lorenzo asked.

Sebastian looked toward the corridor.

“Beneath the oldest part of the estate.”

Isabella frowned.

“This entire mansion has foundations older than the family records.”

“Yes.”

“Then how do we find it?”

Sebastian looked at Emma.

Everyone followed his eyes.

Emma immediately shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

A small smile appeared on Lorenzo’s face.

“Finally.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“You don’t know.”

Emma nodded.

“Yes.”

“And that does not bother you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

She hugged her teddy bear.

“Because Grandpa said not knowing is just the beginning.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Lorenzo turned.

“Let’s find the room.”

The oldest section of the Duca estate was abandoned.

Not officially.

The family would never admit that part of their own home had been forgotten.

But everyone knew.

The western wing had not been used for decades.

The walls were covered with dust.

The floors creaked.

The portraits hanging there showed generations of Duca ancestors watching silently.

Like they knew what was happening.

Like they had been waiting.

Sebastian led the way.

He stopped in front of a large portrait.

A painting of Antonio Duca.

The man whose choices had created everything.

The man whose secrets had nearly destroyed everything.

Lorenzo stared at the portrait.

“My grandfather.”

Sebastian nodded.

“He spent the final years of his life here.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

That surprised Lorenzo.

“Why?”

Sebastian looked at the painting.

“Because he knew the truth had a cost.”

He reached behind the frame.

Another hidden mechanism.

Another secret.

The wall moved.

But this time...

There was no staircase.

No corridor.

Only a small door.

Lorenzo inserted the crown key.

It turned easily.

Too easily.

Like it had been waiting.

The door opened.

Inside was a room unlike the others.

Not an archive.

Not a hidden chamber.

A living space.

A desk.

A chair.

A lamp.

Books.

And on the wall...

Photographs.

Hundreds of them.

The Duca family.

Thomas.

Sebastian.

And one person who appeared again and again.

A woman.

Elena Duca.

Lorenzo’s grandmother.

He stepped inside slowly.

“My grandmother.”

Sebastian nodded.

“This was her room.”

“But she died before I was born.”

“Yes.”

“Why is her room hidden?”

Sebastian looked at the photographs.

“Because Elena knew the truth first.”

Lorenzo turned.

“What truth?”

Sebastian walked to the desk.

There was a sealed envelope.

His name was written on it.

Not Lorenzo’s father.

Not Antonio.

Lorenzo.

His hands stopped.

“My grandfather wrote this?”

“No.”

Sebastian looked at the envelope.

“Your grandmother.”

Nobody expected that.

Lorenzo opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“Lorenzo?”

He did not answer.

Finally, he handed it to Alberto.

The attorney read.

Then looked shocked.

“What?”

Alberto looked at everyone.

“Elena Duca knew Antonio’s mistake.”

A pause.

“She knew the family fortune was built on stolen trust.”

Isabella covered her mouth.

“But she stayed?”

“Yes.”

Sebastian’s voice was quiet.

“Because she believed she could fix it.”

Lorenzo looked around the room.

“She was the protector.”

Sebastian nodded.

“The star.”

Everyone became still.

The second symbol.

The one that remembered.

“Elena kept the records.”

Sebastian continued.

“She worked with Thomas to expose the truth.”

“Then who betrayed them?”

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was on the desk.

Another envelope.

Not addressed to Lorenzo.

Not addressed to Sebastian.

Addressed to:

Thomas Carter.

My breath stopped.

Lorenzo opened it.

Inside was a final photograph.

A final document.

And a name.

The name of the person who had hired Thomas to investigate.

The person who started everything.

Lorenzo read it.

Then slowly looked up.

His expression was empty.

Too empty.

“What?”

He handed the paper to me.

I looked down.

And my entire body went cold.

Because the person who had asked my father to uncover the truth...

Was not a stranger.

Not an enemy.

Not someone outside the Duca family.

It was someone who had been sitting beside them the entire time.

Someone who had helped hide the truth.

Someone who had spent sixty years protecting the secret.

The name on the paper was:

Sebastian Ricci.

The room became silent.

The old butler closed his eyes.

Because the final secret had finally been uncovered.

Sebastian had not just protected the truth.

He had been the person who started the search.

And now everyone had to face the impossible question.

Why would the man who saved the Duca family also be the man who destroyed it?
