Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Written Before He Was Born

For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not Lorenzo.
Not Sebastian.
Not even Marco.
The hidden chamber beneath the Duca estate had revealed something nobody expected.
Not a lost fortune.
Not a secret weapon.
Not a forgotten family agreement.
A person.
My father.
Thomas Carter.
A man who had spent his entire life making sure everyone believed he was ordinary.
And now, standing inside a room that had been locked away for sixty years, I was discovering that ordinary had never been the truth.
Lorenzo placed the photograph carefully back onto the table.
Almost respectfully.
Like it was something fragile.
“Why did my father know your father?”
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
It was the truth.
The only truth I had.
Lorenzo studied my face.
He was searching for a lie.
But I had nothing to hide.
“I spent my whole life thinking my father was exactly who he appeared to be,” I continued.
“A teacher.”
“A painter.”
“A quiet man.”
My voice became softer.
“He never talked about powerful families. He never talked about secrets.”
Emma stood beside me, holding my hand.
She looked at the photograph.
“That’s Grandpa.”
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at the picture.
“He looks younger.”
A strange sadness crossed my chest.
Because she was right.
My father had always seemed old to her.
The man who fixed her toys.
The man who carried her when she fell asleep.
The man who made her pancakes shaped like animals.
She never knew there had been another version of him.
A version connected to hidden rooms and dangerous secrets.
Lorenzo looked at Emma.
Then at the photograph.
“Your grandfather knew my father.”
Emma nodded.
“Yes.”
“How?”
She tilted her head.
The question seemed too complicated.
Then she answered the only way a child could.
“They were friends.”
The room went silent.
Marco let out a short breath.
“Friends?”
Nobody responded.
Because somehow that simple word created more questions than answers.
Sebastian slowly walked toward the table.
His eyes remained fixed on the photograph.
“I never understood why your father trusted Thomas.”
Lorenzo turned.
“You knew him?”
Sebastian nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then explain.”
The old butler looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like he had carried a secret for longer than anyone should.
“Thomas Carter was not just an art teacher.”
I felt my heart tighten.
“Then what was he?”
Sebastian looked at me.
“I don’t know everything.”
That surprised me.
A man who knew about the hidden room.
A man who knew my father.
Still did not know everything.
“But I know what your father was trying to do.”
“What?”
Sebastian looked around the archive.
“He was trying to return something.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“Return what?”
The old man walked to one of the shelves.
He moved several old files aside.
Behind them was another hidden compartment.
Inside was a small wooden folder.
Different from the others.
Newer.
Cleaner.
Protected.
Sebastian removed it.
“This was placed here twenty years ago.”
Lorenzo stared.
“By my father?”
“No.”
Sebastian looked at me.
“By Thomas.”
My hands became cold.
My father had been here.
In this room.
A room I never knew existed.
A room beneath a house I had never visited.
“What was he doing here?” I whispered.
Sebastian did not answer.
Instead, he handed the folder to Lorenzo.
Inside were documents.
Old papers.
Letters.
Photographs.
Lorenzo read the first page.
Then the second.
Then he stopped.
“What?”
Isabella stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
Lorenzo looked up.
His expression was different.
The controlled mask was gone.
“My grandfather.”
He swallowed.
“He did not create the Duca empire.”
Marco frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Lorenzo looked back at the documents.
“It means the story we were told is false.”
The room became silent.
Alberto moved closer.
“Explain.”
Lorenzo handed him the papers.
The attorney read quickly.
Then slower.
Then his face changed.
“No.”
The word was barely audible.
“What?” Isabella asked.
Alberto looked up.
“These documents claim that the original Duca fortune came from a betrayal.”
Marco laughed.
But there was no confidence in it anymore.
“Everyone says that about wealthy families.”
“No.”
Alberto’s voice was different.
“This is specific.”
He turned the pages.
“Names. Dates. Transfers.”
His eyes moved toward Sebastian.
“And witnesses.”
Nobody spoke.
Lorenzo looked at the documents.
“My father discovered that the foundation of this family was built on something stolen.”
“From whom?” I asked.
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Lorenzo looked at me.
“From people who trusted them.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
The same words Emma had spoken earlier.
Families hide things because they are ashamed.
Lorenzo continued reading.
“There is a letter.”
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
The handwriting was familiar.
I knew it before he even said anything.
Thomas.
My father.
Lorenzo hesitated.
Then he began reading.
“Dear Lorenzo.”
Everyone became still.
“If you are reading this, then the watching bird has finally turned around.”
Emma smiled slightly.
“The bird.”
Lorenzo continued.
“Your father spent his life trying to correct a mistake he did not create. He believed protecting the family name was more important than protecting the truth.”
He paused.
His eyes moved across the page.
“But a family built on a lie is not protected. It is trapped.”
The words felt heavier than the stone walls around us.
Lorenzo kept reading.
“Many people will tell you that the past cannot be changed. They will say some secrets are better buried.”
A pause.
“They are wrong.”
The room was completely silent.
“Truth does not disappear when you hide it. It waits.”
Lorenzo lowered the letter slightly.
Then continued.
“Your father was not betrayed because he was weak.”
His voice became quieter.
“He was betrayed because he chose to do what no one else would.”
I looked at Sebastian.
The old man’s eyes were wet.
“What did he choose?” Isabella whispered.
Lorenzo read the final line.
“He chose to expose the person who saved the Duca family by destroying his own.”
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
Someone had protected the Duca name.
But that person had paid the price.
My father.
Thomas Carter.
Lorenzo looked at me.
“I need to ask you something.”
I nodded.
“What?”
“Did your father ever mention a name?”
I thought.
Every conversation.
Every memory.
Every small detail.
Then something surfaced.
Something I had forgotten because it seemed meaningless.
“He used to say one thing.”
“What?”
I looked at the old photograph.
“He said…”
My voice became quiet.
“Never trust the person standing closest to the door.”
Everyone turned toward the entrance of the hidden chamber.
The door behind us.
The only way in.
The only way out.
And slowly...
Everyone realized something.
The person standing closest to the door was not a stranger.
It was someone who had followed them down.
Someone who had known about this room.
Someone who had spent decades protecting the Duca family.
Sebastian.
The old butler noticed their expressions.
Then he slowly stepped away from the doorway.
“I wondered when you would remember that.”
Lorenzo’s face hardened.
“Sebastian.”
The old man looked at him.
“I did not betray your father.”
A pause.
“But I did betray someone.”
Nobody breathed.
“Who?”
Sebastian looked at the photograph of Thomas Carter.
And for the first time...
He looked ashamed.
“Your grandfather.”
The hidden chamber fell silent.
Because the truth they had searched for was not finished.
It had only opened another door.
May you like
And behind that door...
Was a betrayal that began before Lorenzo Duca was even born.
