Chapter 8 - The Protector Hidden Among Them

Darkness arrived without warning.

One second, the hidden chamber beneath the Duca estate was filled with the warm glow of old lamps and the quiet tension of people discovering a truth they had spent decades searching for.

The next second...

Everything disappeared.

No light.

No sound.

Only darkness.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not because they were calm.

Because they were trying to understand what had happened.

Then came the first sound.

A small breath.

Emma.

I immediately reached for her hand.

“Emma?”

“I’m here, Mommy.”

Her voice was steady.

That somehow made me more worried.

Children were not supposed to sound calm in a room that had suddenly gone black beneath an old mansion.

“Everyone stay where you are,” Lorenzo said.

His voice cut through the darkness.

Controlled.

Firm.

The voice of a man who had spent his life taking control of dangerous situations.

A second later, I heard movement.

Someone stepping backward.

Someone touching the wall.

Then another sound.

A small click.

The emergency lights turned on.

A weak red glow filled the chamber.

Enough to see faces.

Enough to see fear.

Lorenzo stood near the table.

Sebastian was beside the hidden wall.

Alberto held the documents tightly against his chest.

Isabella stood frozen.

Marco was looking toward the entrance.

And Emma was holding my hand.

But someone was missing.

Lorenzo noticed it too.

His eyes moved across the room.

“Where is Marco?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone realized the same thing.

He had disappeared.

A cold feeling moved through the chamber.

Not because Marco was gone.

Because of when he left.

During the darkness.

When nobody could see.

Lorenzo walked toward the entrance.

“Marco.”

No answer.

He looked at Sebastian.

“Can this door be opened from outside?”

The old butler shook his head.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

His voice became heavier.

“This chamber was designed so that only someone inside could leave.”

Lorenzo stopped.

That meant only one thing.

Marco had not escaped.

He had been allowed to leave.

Someone had helped him.

The hidden chamber became silent again.

The words from Thomas’s letter returned.

The person who destroyed the Duca family was never outside the house.

Lorenzo looked at everyone.

Nobody looked away.

But nobody looked comfortable either.

“Search the room.”

Nobody questioned him.

Even Marco’s disappearance had changed something.

Before, they were searching for the truth.

Now they knew the truth was searching for them.

I looked at Emma.

She was staring at the old photograph on the table.

The one showing Thomas beside Lorenzo’s grandmother.

“What is it?” I whispered.

Emma pointed.

“The bird.”

I looked at the picture.

I saw nothing.

“What bird?”

She pointed to the corner.

There was a small mark.

Almost invisible.

A tiny symbol written behind the photograph.

Another bird.

But this one was different.

It was facing forward.

Not backward.

Sebastian noticed.

His expression changed.

“Where did you see that?”

Emma looked confused.

“Here.”

She touched the corner.

“Grandpa said the first bird looks back because it remembers.”

A pause.

“The second bird looks forward because it knows where to go.”

Lorenzo moved closer.

“What does that mean?”

Emma looked at the wall.

“The secret isn’t finished.”

Sebastian closed his eyes.

Because he understood.

“There was another message.”

Everyone turned toward him.

“You knew?”

The old butler looked ashamed.

“I suspected.”

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“You have said that before.”

“I was wrong before.”

Sebastian looked at the hidden chamber.

“This time, I know.”

He walked toward the shelves.

Not the ones containing documents.

The ones holding old books.

He removed three.

Then two more.

Behind them was another small compartment.

Inside was a metal cylinder.

Alberto stared.

“What is that?”

Sebastian carefully removed it.

“Your grandfather’s final recording.”

Lorenzo froze.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

The cylinder was old.

Very old.

A device from another time.

A secret message preserved because someone knew paper could be destroyed.

Sebastian placed it on the table.

Everyone gathered around.

Then he looked at Lorenzo.

“Before we listen…”

A pause.

“You need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Your grandfather was not afraid of losing power.”

Lorenzo waited.

“He was afraid of losing the family.”

The old man activated the device.

For a moment, there was only static.

Then...

A voice.

Old.

Weak.

But clear.

Antonio Duca.

Lorenzo’s grandfather.

“If you are hearing this…”

The room became completely still.

“Then the codex has been solved.”

Lorenzo stared at the machine.

His grandfather’s voice filled the underground chamber.

“I always believed my greatest mistake was trusting the wrong person.”

A pause.

“I was wrong.”

Everyone listened.

“My greatest mistake was believing I could fix a broken family by hiding the pieces.”

I felt Emma squeeze my hand.

The recording continued.

“The Duca name was built by many people. Some were remembered. Some were erased.”

A crack of static.

“But the person who saved this family was never the person standing at the front.”

Lorenzo looked at Sebastian.

The old butler looked down.

“He was the person standing in the shadows.”

The recording paused.

Then continued.

“Sebastian Ricci.”

Everyone froze.

The old man closed his eyes.

“My loyal servant.”

A pause.

“My greatest regret.”

Lorenzo looked shocked.

The voice continued.

“You believed betraying me would protect the family.”

Sebastian’s eyes filled with emotion.

“But you misunderstood one thing.”

The room was silent.

“You were never protecting my legacy.”

A pause.

“You were protecting my son.”

Lorenzo looked away.

The recording continued.

“Lorenzo, if you are listening to this, then you have discovered the truth.”

The voice became softer.

“You inherited a name.”

A pause.

“But you were never meant to inherit its mistakes.”

Nobody spoke.

Then the recording revealed the final piece.

“The person who betrayed this family was not someone who wanted money.”

Static.

“They wanted control.”

Another pause.

“And they are still close.”

The machine clicked.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Because the message had answered one question.

But created another.

Who wanted control?

Not wealth.

Not inheritance.

Control.

Lorenzo looked around the chamber.

His eyes stopped on the empty space where Marco had stood.

Then moved to the documents.

Then to Sebastian.

“You knew.”

Sebastian nodded.

“Yes.”

“You knew my grandfather trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“And you let everyone believe you betrayed him?”

The old man looked at Lorenzo.

“Because the real traitor believed I had.”

The answer was unexpected.

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Sebastian took a slow breath.

“Your grandfather needed someone to take the blame.”

“For what?”

“For hiding the truth.”

The old man looked at the photograph of Thomas.

“Thomas helped him.”

“And you?”

“I helped them both.”

A pause.

“But someone found out.”

The red emergency light flickered.

Everyone looked upward.

The electricity was still unstable.

Sebastian continued.

“The traitor believed Thomas had hidden proof.”

Lorenzo’s expression changed.

“He didn’t.”

“No.”

Sebastian looked at Emma.

“He hid the key.”

Everyone followed his gaze.

The little girl.

My daughter.

Emma looked down at her teddy bear.

Then suddenly became very quiet.

“Mommy.”

I knelt beside her.

“What?”

She slowly touched the repaired ear of the teddy bear.

“Grandpa put something inside.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Emma looked at me.

“He said the bear was broken.”

A pause.

“But broken things can hide important things.”

Nobody spoke.

Sebastian stepped closer.

“Emma…”

She pulled the green thread gently.

The old stitching loosened.

Something small fell from inside.

A tiny metal key.

Lorenzo stared.

Alberto covered his mouth.

Because everyone understood.

Thomas Carter had not hidden the final answer beneath the Duca estate.

He had hidden it with the person nobody would ever suspect.

His granddaughter.

Lorenzo picked up the key.

And on it was engraved one final symbol.

Not the bird.

Not the star.

A crown.

Sebastian looked at it.

Then whispered:

“The last room.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“What last room?”

The old butler’s face turned pale.

“The room where Antonio Duca kept the truth about who betrayed him.”

A pause.

“And who paid Thomas Carter to uncover it.”

The hidden chamber fell silent.

Because they finally understood.

The mystery was never just about the Duca family.

It was about the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

And now...

They had the key to find them.
