Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind The Door

The voice came from the darkness.

"Emma."

I couldn't move.

Nobody could.

For four years, everyone believed Noah Vale's mother was dead.

For four years, Adrian lived with the memory of losing his wife.

For four years, a woman who was supposed to be gone had been hidden somewhere beneath his own mansion.

And now she was calling my name.

Noah stepped closer to the open doorway.

"Mommy."

His voice was barely a whisper.

Adrian immediately grabbed his shoulder.

"Noah."

But the boy looked at him.

Not scared.

Not confused.

Certain.

"She's here."

The room beyond the door was dark.

The only light came from the hallway behind us.

Daniel moved first.

He stepped in front of everyone.

"Wait."

Adrian looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel's expression was serious.

"If she's alive, then someone has been protecting this secret for years."

His eyes moved toward Noah.

"And someone has been trying to make sure nobody found her."

I looked at the hidden room.

The woman's voice came again.

"Emma, please."

That was enough.

I stepped inside.

The room was larger than I expected.

Not a prison.

Not a hidden basement.

A living space.

There was a small bed.

A table.

Books.

Medical supplies.

A lamp still turned on.

Someone had been living here.

Recently.

My eyes moved across the room.

Then I saw her.

A woman sitting near the back wall.

Older than the pictures.

Tired.

Pale.

But alive.

Her eyes filled with tears when she saw Noah.

The boy ran forward.

Adrian didn't stop him.

He couldn't.

Because he was frozen.

The woman held Noah tightly.

"I'm sorry."

The words broke something inside the room.

Noah cried into her shoulder.

Not like a child meeting a stranger.

Like a child finally finding his mother.

I looked at Adrian.

He hadn't moved.

He was staring at his wife.

The woman he buried.

The woman he believed he lost.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"No, this isn't possible."

The woman looked at him.

"Adrian."

He stepped back.

Like the sound of her voice hurt.

"You died."

She shook her head.

"No."

A tear moved down her face.

"I disappeared."

Her name was Claire Vale.

And for the next hour, nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

Adrian couldn't take his eyes away from her.

Every emotion he had buried for years was appearing at once.

Anger.

Confusion.

Pain.

Hope.

"Why?"

That was the only word he could say.

Claire looked down.

"Because they were going to kill Noah."

The room became silent.

Adrian's expression changed.

"Who?"

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

Then back at Adrian.

"The people who made you forget."

I felt a chill.

The same phrase again.

Forget.

Claire slowly stood.

She looked weaker than I expected.

But her eyes were focused.

"I tried to tell you."

Adrian looked away.

"I don't remember."

"I know."

Her voice softened.

"That's why I stopped trying."

He looked at her.

"What happened to me?"

Claire hesitated.

Then answered.

"You were poisoned."

The words hit him hard.

"By who?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was worse than the question.

"Someone you trusted."

Daniel looked away.

Like he already knew.

Adrian noticed.

"You know who."

Daniel stayed silent.

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Daniel."

The man finally looked at him.

"Yes."

"Tell me."

Daniel swallowed.

"The person who betrayed you was inside your organization."

"Who?"

Daniel looked at Noah.

Then at Claire.

"Your second-in-command."

The room went still.

Adrian's face changed.

Because there was only one person who had been beside him long enough.

One person who had access to everything.

One person he had trusted completely.

"Marcus."

Daniel nodded.

Everything started making sense.

The missing records.

The erased footage.

The hidden rooms.

The fake Adrian.

The person who knew the mansion.

The person who could control security.

Marcus.

The man who had worked with Adrian for twelve years.

The man everyone called his right hand.

I looked at Claire.

"Why did you bring me here?"

She looked at me.

"Because I couldn't reach Adrian."

"Why me?"

Her eyes moved to Noah.

"Because Noah chose you."

I frowned.

"What?"

Claire smiled sadly.

"Before I disappeared, I left instructions."

"For who?"

"The person who would listen."

She looked at Noah.

"He always knew."

The boy looked down.

I remembered his words.

You're the first one who listened.

I thought it was just a child needing help.

I was wrong.

Noah had been trying to lead me here from the beginning.

Claire walked to a small cabinet.

She opened it.

Inside were dozens of documents.

"These are everything I collected."

She handed Adrian a folder.

"Proof."

He opened it.

The first pages were financial records.

Transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Private messages.

Then photographs.

Marcus.

Meeting with people.

Meeting with someone else.

Adrian's hands tightened.

"How long?"

Claire looked at him.

"Before Noah was born."

His face fell.

The betrayal wasn't recent.

It was planned.

For years.

That night, Adrian called his security team.

But something happened.

Nobody answered.

One by one, the phones went silent.

Daniel checked his device.

Then his expression changed.

"The system has been taken over."

Adrian looked at him.

"By who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Everyone already knew.

Marcus.

The mansion suddenly went dark.

Again.

The same as before.

Only this time, we knew someone was inside.

Noah grabbed my hand.

"He's here."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

The boy stared toward the hallway.

"The other Daddy."

My heart dropped.

Adrian moved immediately.

"Everyone stays together."

But before we could leave the hidden room, the speakers inside the mansion turned on.

A man's voice filled the hallway.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

"Adrian."

Nobody spoke.

The voice continued.

"You finally found her."

Adrian stared at the speaker.

"Marcus."

A quiet laugh came through.

"After all these years, you finally remembered my name."

Claire's face went pale.

Because she knew something.

Something none of us knew.

"Adrian."

Her voice trembled.

"Don't answer him."

But it was too late.

Marcus continued.

"You want to know the truth?"

The mansion lights flickered.

"I can finally give you your memories back."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

"I'm exactly where I've always been."

The security monitors suddenly turned on.

Every screen showed the same image.

The mansion entrance.

A man standing there.

Wearing Adrian's old black suit.

Smiling at the camera.

But that wasn't what terrified me.

It was the person standing beside him.

A person nobody expected.

May you like

Because the woman next to Marcus was holding a photograph of Noah's mother.

And she looked exactly like Claire.
