Chapter 5 - The Man Who Came Back From The Dead

The front door was open.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody heard it.

But everyone saw it.

I stood frozen at the top of the staircase, staring at the man standing outside the mansion.

The security lights illuminated his face.

And for a second, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Because Adrian Vale had been standing beside me moments earlier.

But outside that door...

Was another man with Adrian Vale's face.

Same height.

Same dark hair.

Same sharp features.

Same cold eyes.

Except there was one difference.

The man outside looked exactly like the person Noah had been warning us about.

The fake Daddy.

Nobody moved.

Not the guards.

Not the employees.

Not even Adrian.

The entire mansion seemed to hold its breath.

Then the man outside smiled.

A small, calm smile.

Like he had been invited.

"Adrian."

His voice echoed through the entrance hall.

And I watched Adrian's expression collapse.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"No."

The word left his mouth quietly.

Almost like he was talking to himself.

The man outside stepped forward.

The guards immediately raised their weapons.

But Adrian lifted his hand.

"Stop."

Everyone looked at him.

The danger in his voice wasn't directed at the stranger.

It was directed at his own people.

"Nobody moves."

The stranger looked amused.

"Still protecting me?"

Adrian stared at him.

"You died."

The man's smile disappeared.

"No."

He looked around the mansion.

"I was erased."

My heart started racing.

Because that was exactly the word Noah's mother used.

Erased.

The man walked slowly into the house.

The guards watched him carefully.

But nobody stopped him.

Not because they trusted him.

Because Adrian did not know what to do.

And that scared me more than anything.

Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.

The moment he saw the man, his entire body froze.

His stuffed animal slipped from his hand.

"Daddy."

Everyone turned.

Adrian immediately looked at him.

"Noah, go back to your room."

But Noah didn't move.

He was staring at the stranger.

Not with fear.

With sadness.

Like he had been waiting years for this moment.

The stranger looked at Noah.

And his expression changed.

For the first time, he looked human.

"Noah."

The boy whispered:

"You're not him."

The man's face became serious.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm not."

I felt my breathing stop.

Because Noah already knew.

He knew before any of us.

Adrian walked closer.

"Who are you?"

The stranger looked at him.

"That's the question you should have asked four years ago."

The tension in the room became unbearable.

Adrian's fists tightened.

"Answer me."

The man looked at me.

Then at Noah.

Then back at Adrian.

"My name is Daniel."

Silence.

Nobody reacted.

Except Adrian.

Because that name meant something.

His face changed.

"Daniel died."

The man gave a small laugh.

"That's what you were told."

Adrian stepped back.

"No."

Daniel looked at him.

"You really don't remember, do you?"

Those words hit the room like a weapon.

I looked at Adrian.

Because I finally understood.

He wasn't pretending.

He genuinely didn't know.

We moved into the library.

Nobody wanted Daniel near Noah.

But nobody could explain why.

Because Daniel wasn't acting like an enemy.

He wasn't threatening anyone.

He wasn't trying to escape.

He simply sat there like a man returning to a place that had been stolen from him.

Adrian stood across from him.

"You were my business partner."

Daniel nodded.

"Before I became your problem."

"What happened?"

Daniel looked at Noah.

Then at me.

"Your wife found out."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Found out what?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the basement.

"The same thing she hid down there."

The room went silent.

I placed the photograph on the table.

"She knew about him."

Daniel looked at it.

His eyes softened.

"She knew everything."

Adrian looked at me.

"Everything?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your wife discovered someone inside your organization was using your name."

My stomach tightened.

"Someone pretending to be Adrian."

Daniel looked at him.

"Not pretending."

A pause.

"Replacing."

Nobody spoke.

The idea sounded impossible.

But the evidence kept appearing.

Noah's fear.

The recordings.

The hidden rooms.

The photographs.

The warnings.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"She tried."

The words were quiet.

"But every time she tried, you forgot."

Adrian froze.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel leaned forward.

"It means someone was making sure you couldn't remember."

The room became colder.

I looked at Adrian.

His expression was empty.

Like someone had just opened a door inside his mind.

A door he had spent years keeping closed.

"I had headaches."

He whispered.

"After the accident."

Daniel nodded.

"You were drugged."

Adrian looked at him.

"By who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the hallway.

The same hallway Noah always watched.

"By the person who has been living in your house."

That night, I stayed awake.

There were too many unanswered questions.

But one thing was becoming clear.

Adrian wasn't the monster everyone believed him to be.

He was someone who had been manipulated.

Someone who had lost pieces of his own life.

Someone who couldn't trust his own memories.

At 2:13 a.m., there was a knock on my door.

I opened it carefully.

Noah stood outside.

Holding another envelope.

"Mommy said I should give you this when he came back."

I took it.

"Who is he?"

Noah looked behind him.

Then whispered:

"The person who made Daddy forget."

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

"Did your mother know he would come back?"

Noah nodded.

"She said he always comes back when the truth gets close."

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a small key.

And a note.

One sentence.

"Open the room beneath the room."

I stared at the words.

There was another room.

Another secret.

Another place hidden beneath the basement.

I looked at Noah.

"Where is this?"

He pointed downward.

Not toward the basement.

Below it.

"There."

The next morning, Adrian ordered everyone out of the west wing.

Only me, him, Daniel, and Noah remained.

We returned to the hidden basement.

Daniel walked straight to the back wall.

He pressed his hand against a small section of stone.

A hidden button appeared.

Adrian stared.

"You knew about this?"

Daniel looked at him.

"I helped build it."

The wall unlocked.

A narrow staircase appeared.

Leading deeper underground.

The air changed.

Colder.

Older.

The walls were covered with scratches.

As we descended, I noticed something carved into the stone.

A sentence.

Written over and over.

"Remember."

At the bottom was another door.

Unlike the others.

This one was locked with a fingerprint scanner.

Adrian stepped forward.

The machine lit up.

But it rejected him.

Red light.

Denied.

He tried again.

Rejected.

Daniel looked at him.

"That's strange."

Adrian stared.

"Why?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because the scanner suddenly changed.

The light turned green.

Not for Adrian.

For someone behind us.

I slowly turned.

Noah was standing there.

His small hand was touching the scanner.

The door opened.

And from inside the hidden room...

A woman's voice whispered:

"Emma."

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

On the recording.

May you like

Noah's mother.

She was alive.
