Chapter 5 - The Evidence Claire Hid

The voice came from inside the storage room.

My name.

Someone had whispered my name.

I stepped backward.

Every instinct told me to leave.

But I stayed.

Because I had spent my entire life running away from uncomfortable truths.

Not anymore.

I tightened my grip around the small key.

"Claire?"

No answer.

I pushed the door open.

The room was smaller than I expected.

There were old boxes stacked against the walls.

Business files.

Photographs.

Personal belongings.

But there was no one inside.

Only a single lamp sitting on the floor.

And on the table in the center of the room was a laptop.

Still open.

Still running.

I walked closer.

The screen showed a paused video.

The title made my heart stop.

"FOR EVELYN — PLAY ONLY IF HE FINDS OUT."

Evelyn.

My mother.

I sat down slowly.

My hands felt numb.

Claire had hidden this room.

Claire had protected this evidence.

But why?

I pressed play.

The video started.

My mother appeared again.

This time, she looked even more frightened.

"If you are seeing this, then Claire finally gave you access."

I froze.

Claire.

My mother knew.

She knew Claire would be the one to reveal the truth.

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"I know you probably hate us right now."

I looked away.

Because she was right.

I hated what my family had done.

I hated the lies.

I hated that the people who were supposed to protect me were the ones trying to destroy me.

"But before you judge Claire, you need to understand something."

My attention returned to the screen.

"She didn't betray you."

The words hit me harder than I expected.

My mother continued.

"Three years ago, your father discovered that investors were interested in your company. He knew Everly Events would become worth millions."

The video showed documents appearing on the screen.

Contracts.

Emails.

Financial agreements.

"He wanted control."

My mother's voice shook.

"Not partnership. Not investment. Control."

I leaned closer.

"He knew you would never willingly sell. So he created a problem."

The video changed.

A copy of Brianna's debt agreement appeared.

I stared at it.

The amount.

The signatures.

The dates.

Everything.

My mother continued.

"Brianna's debt was real. But the reason it became impossible to repay was because your father secretly transferred additional fees and penalties through people connected to him."

I covered my mouth.

He didn't just use the debt.

He made it worse.

He created the trap.

"He knew Brianna would panic."

My mother's voice became softer.

"He knew she would come to you."

I thought about Brianna crying in my kitchen.

The fear in her eyes.

She wasn't only afraid of the debt.

She was afraid of the person who created it.

The video continued.

"Claire discovered what he was doing."

My eyes widened.

"She tried to stop him."

The screen showed an email.

From Claire.

To my father.

The subject line:

"Leave her alone."

I read the message.

Claire had begged him to stop.

She had threatened to expose him.

And his response was only three words.

"Think carefully, Claire."

My stomach tightened.

Because I understood.

He threatened her too.

My mother looked into the camera.

"Your father knows how to control people. He uses their weaknesses against them."

She paused.

"But Claire kept copies of everything."

The video ended.

I sat there in silence.

The person I thought betrayed me had actually been protecting me.

The person I trusted most had been fighting a battle I didn't even know existed.

I closed the laptop.

Then I noticed something underneath it.

A second envelope.

This one was thicker.

Inside were printed emails.

Hundreds of them.

Between my father and a group of investors.

I read through them.

The plan was clear.

Step one:

Create financial pressure.

Step two:

Force me to sell.

Step three:

Purchase my company at a fraction of its value.

Step four:

Remove me completely.

They didn't want my business.

They wanted my identity erased from it.

I kept reading.

Then I saw the final email.

Sent two days before my parents destroyed my kitchen.

The sender was my father.

The recipient was Claire.

The message was short.

"You failed to convince her. Now we do this the hard way."

I felt anger rise inside me.

They knew.

They knew I would refuse.

They planned the destruction.

It wasn't an emotional reaction.

It was a business strategy.

My father didn't lose control.

He chose this.

I took pictures of every document.

Then I grabbed the laptop.

I needed to get out.

But before I reached the door, my phone rang.

It was Brianna.

I hesitated.

Then answered.

"Where are you?"

Her voice sounded terrified.

"I need to talk to you."

"About what?"

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"About Claire."

My expression changed.

"What about her?"

"I know why Dad was so afraid of her."

I stood still.

"Tell me."

"I found something."

"What?"

Brianna took a shaky breath.

"Something Dad never wanted anyone to see."

I waited.

"Where are you?"

She gave me an address.

It was an old warehouse outside the city.

"Why are you there?"

"Because that's where Dad kept the original files."

My heart started racing.

"Stay there. I'm coming."

"No."

Her voice became urgent.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

"He knows I found them."

I looked around the storage room.

"What are you saying?"

There was silence.

Then I heard something in the background.

A door opening.

Brianna whispered:

"He's here."

The call ended.

I ran.

I didn't think.

I didn't plan.

I just moved.

Because for the first time, I understood the danger wasn't only about losing my company.

It was about the people who were willing to destroy anyone who stood in their way.

When I arrived at the warehouse, the building was dark.

The address led me to an abandoned industrial area.

I parked outside.

No lights.

No movement.

I called Brianna.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

I stepped inside.

The warehouse smelled like dust and old metal.

"Brianna?"

My voice echoed.

No response.

Then I saw something on the ground.

A broken phone.

Her phone.

Next to it was a folder.

I picked it up.

Inside were documents.

But not financial documents.

Medical records.

I looked at the name.

Brianna.

The dates.

The signatures.

My heart dropped.

Because the records proved something impossible.

Brianna's debt had not started three years ago.

It started much earlier.

Before she was even old enough to sign anything herself.

Someone had been using her name for years.

I turned the page.

At the bottom was a signature.

The person responsible.

I knew the handwriting.

I had seen it on every document controlling my life.

My father's signature.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

A picture.

It showed Brianna sitting inside a car.

Alive.

But not alone.

Someone was sitting beside her.

Someone who looked directly at the camera.

Someone who had been missing for three years.

The message underneath said:

"Your sister finally found out who her real enemy was."

I stared at the picture.

Then another message appeared.

"Now come alone if you want to know why your mother disappeared."

I looked toward the warehouse entrance.

May you like

The door slowly opened from the outside.

And a voice called my name.
