Chapter 3 - The Person Behind The Betrayal

The office door moved slowly.

I stood there, frozen.

My hand was still on the handle.

Someone was inside.

For a few seconds, I couldn't hear anything except my own heartbeat.

I thought about calling the police.

I thought about running.

But then I remembered everything that had happened.

My family breaking into my kitchen.

My father threatening me.

The hidden messages.

The photograph.

The secrets.

I had spent too many years letting other people decide what I should fear.

Not anymore.

I pushed the door open.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

The office was dark.

The only light came from the city outside my window.

I stepped inside carefully.

My desk was exactly where I left it.

My computer was still there.

My files were still there.

But something felt wrong.

The drawer on the right side of my desk was open.

I never left it open.

Inside that drawer was the one thing I protected more than anything.

My original business records.

Every contract.

Every payment.

Every investment.

Everything that proved how I built Everly Events Catering.

I walked toward the drawer.

My hands tightened.

The folder was missing.

Someone had been searching for it.

And they had found it.

I looked around the room again.

Then I saw something on my chair.

A small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Because I had seen it thousands of times.

My father.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

"Your company was never supposed to become this successful."

I stared at the words.

My stomach turned.

This wasn't just about Brianna's debt.

It had never been about the debt.

Someone had been watching my company grow.

Someone had been waiting for the right moment to take it.

I took a picture of the note with my phone.

Then I heard something.

A noise from the hallway.

I turned.

The office door was closing.

Someone was leaving.

I ran after them.

"Stop!"

The person moved quickly down the stairs.

I followed.

But when I reached the first floor, they were gone.

The front door was still locked.

The windows were closed.

There was nowhere they could have escaped.

Unless they knew another way out.

I stood there in the darkness.

Then I noticed something.

A small mark on the floor.

A trail of dirt.

Leading toward the back hallway.

The same hallway connected to the storage room.

I walked slowly.

Every step felt heavier.

I opened the storage room door.

Nothing.

Boxes.

Old equipment.

Business supplies.

Then I noticed one box that didn't belong.

It was sitting in the corner.

Covered with dust.

But the lock was new.

Someone had recently opened it.

I picked it up.

The label on the side made my blood run cold.

"Everly Events — Original Ownership Documents."

My documents.

The ones that were supposedly lost during my first year in business.

I had spent years trying to find them.

I thought they were destroyed.

But they were here.

Inside my own office.

I opened the box.

Inside were documents I had never seen before.

Contracts.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

And one document with my father's signature.

The date was three years ago.

The same year my business began expanding.

I read the first line.

"Acquisition Proposal."

My hands started shaking.

My father wasn't trying to save Brianna.

He was trying to take my company.

The debt was a weapon.

A reason to force me into selling.

A reason to make me desperate.

But why?

I kept reading.

The document showed that a private investment group had been interested in buying Everly Events.

Not buying part of it.

Buying everything.

And the person who introduced them was my father.

I felt like the room was spinning.

My own father had been planning this.

Quietly.

Patiently.

Waiting until my company became valuable enough.

I grabbed my phone and called my lawyer.

She answered after the first ring.

"Are you okay?"

"No."

I looked at the documents.

"I found something."

There was silence.

"What did you find?"

I took a picture and sent it.

A few seconds later, she responded.

"Where did you get this?"

"From my office."

Another pause.

Then her voice changed.

"Listen carefully. Do not confront your father yet."

"Why?"

"Because if these documents are real, your father isn't the only person involved."

I looked at the papers again.

"What do you mean?"

"Look at the final page."

I turned the document over.

There was a signature.

Not my father's.

Not Brianna's.

Someone else's.

My lawyer continued.

"That person has connections to companies that specialize in aggressive takeovers."

I stared at the name.

Then everything made sense.

The unknown messages.

The threats.

The pressure.

Someone had been trying to scare me into giving up.

"Who is it?" I asked.

My lawyer became quiet.

Then she said:

"Someone who has been closer to you than you realize."

The call ended.

I stared at the name.

My hands went cold.

Because I knew that name.

I had invited that person to my business meetings.

I had trusted that person with my financial information.

I had considered that person family.

The next morning, I went back to the kitchen.

I needed to see the damage again.

Not because I wanted to remember the pain.

Because I wanted to remember what I was fighting for.

My employees arrived one by one.

They were shocked.

Many of them had worked with me for years.

They knew how much this place meant.

One of my chefs, Daniel, looked around.

"Who did this?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Because I wasn't ready to say it out loud.

"My family."

Everyone became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

"Your family did this?"

I nodded.

Then I showed him the recording.

The footage from the backup system.

My father.

My mother.

Brianna.

Every second.

Every word.

Nobody spoke after watching it.

Then Daniel said something I never expected.

"You should know something."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He hesitated.

"Someone came here last week asking questions."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

"I don't know. They said they were interested in investing."

"Did you give them anything?"

"No."

He looked uncomfortable.

"But they knew everything."

"Everything?"

He nodded.

"They knew your suppliers. Your contracts. Your expansion plans."

My mind raced.

Only a few people had access to that information.

I walked into my office.

I opened my computer.

I checked the security logs.

There were several unusual access attempts over the past month.

Different locations.

Different devices.

But one account appeared again and again.

A trusted user account.

My stomach dropped.

Because I knew exactly whose account it was.

The same person who had helped me create my first business plan.

The same person who told me they believed in me when nobody else did.

The same person who stood beside me when I opened my first kitchen.

I clicked the profile.

A list of accessed files appeared.

Financial reports.

Investor documents.

Private contracts.

Everything.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A new message arrived.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a picture attached.

It showed someone standing outside my kitchen last night.

Watching.

Waiting.

Under the picture was one sentence:

"You finally found the person who betrayed you."

Another message appeared immediately.

"Now open the file named after your mother."

I stared at my screen.

Because I had never created a file named after my mother.

But somehow...

It was already inside my computer.

I clicked the folder.

The screen went black.

Then one video file appeared.

Created date:

Three years ago.

The day before my father asked me to sign away my company.

I pressed play.

The first frame appeared.

And I heard my mother's voice whisper:

"If you are watching this, it means your father failed to stop you..."

Then the video showed the person sitting beside her.

Someone I never expected to see.

May you like

Someone who was supposed to be on my side.

The person looked directly into the camera and said my name.
