Chapter 6 - The Name Hidden From Everyone

The lock clicked.

The sound was small.

But inside that server room, it felt louder than the explosion of the entire night.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

Someone had trapped us inside.

Renzo immediately reached for the door handle.

Locked.

He pulled harder.

Nothing.

"Security."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

He pulled out his phone and called his team.

No signal.

I looked at the computers.

The screens were still glowing.

Still showing the same message.

LEORA VANCE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE A PRIEST EMPLOYEE.

I stared at those words.

Because they felt impossible.

My entire adult life had been connected to the Priest family.

My career.

My reputation.

My identity.

Everything.

And now a file was telling me I had been living inside someone else's plan.

"Open the file."

Renzo looked at me.

"Are you sure?"

No.

I wasn't.

But I had spent eleven years believing a lie.

I couldn't stop now.

"Yes."

I clicked the folder.

A list of documents appeared.

The first one was dated twenty-eight years earlier.

Before I was born.

The title made my hands freeze.

ORIGINAL VANCE FAMILY TRUST AGREEMENT.

Vance.

My last name.

But not the Vance I knew.

My family had never been wealthy.

My father worked ordinary jobs.

My mother struggled.

That was the story.

That was what I believed.

Renzo opened the document.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

"What?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That scared me.

"What does it say?"

He looked at me.

"Your parents were not employees of the Priest family."

I swallowed.

"I know."

"No."

He looked back at the screen.

"You don't."

The document continued loading.

A name appeared.

Alexander Vance.

My grandfather.

I had heard that name before.

Only once.

My mother mentioned him when I was young.

Then she never spoke about him again.

The next line appeared.

Founder and majority owner of Vance Maritime Holdings.

I stepped backward.

"No."

My mother looked away.

I turned toward her.

"You knew."

She didn't deny it.

"You knew."

"Leora..."

"No."

My voice shook.

"You knew my family owned a company?"

She closed her eyes.

"I knew your grandfather built something."

"Something?"

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because my entire reality was collapsing.

"This says majority ownership."

Renzo continued reading.

"And it says the company was transferred after his death."

I looked at the screen.

"To who?"

Nobody answered.

I already knew.

The next document opened automatically.

TRANSFER OF VANCE HOLDINGS CONTROL.

The beneficiary name appeared.

Conrad Priest.

The room became silent.

For years, Conrad had told everyone he built his empire.

But the truth was different.

He didn't build everything.

He inherited something.

Something that belonged to my family.

My mother stepped closer.

"He promised he would protect it."

I looked at her.

"Who?"

"Your grandfather."

My mother looked at the documents.

"Before he died, he trusted Conrad to manage the company until you were old enough."

My chest tightened.

"Until I was old enough?"

She nodded.

"The agreement was clear."

Renzo looked at the screen.

"Leora was the rightful successor."

I stared at him.

The word felt strange.

Successor.

Inheritance.

Power.

Those were words that belonged to people like Renzo.

Not me.

Not the woman standing in the corner at an engagement gala.

Not the woman Gianna told everyone was just someone who handled paperwork.

Then another document opened.

This one was different.

It was a scanned letter.

Written by my grandfather.

The first sentence made my breath stop.

To my granddaughter, Leora Vance.

I couldn't move.

Renzo looked at me.

"Read it."

My hands shook as I opened the file.

The letter appeared.

Leora,

If you are reading this, then Conrad failed to keep the truth hidden.

I stopped.

Failed.

Not succeeded.

Not betrayed.

Failed.

Like my grandfather knew this day would come.

You were never supposed to grow up believing you had nothing.

My eyes blurred.

I knew power could destroy people. That is why I chose to hide you from it.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying silently.

The people who chase money will always look for the person who owns it. So I removed your name from every public record.

The next sentence changed everything.

But Conrad Priest was never meant to own what belonged to you.

I continued reading.

If he ever discovers who you truly are, he will do everything possible to control your future.

My stomach tightened.

Because he had.

For years.

He had placed me inside his company.

He had kept me close.

But powerless.

Until now.

The letter continued.

Trust the person who sees your value before they know your name.

I stopped.

Renzo noticed.

"What?"

I looked at him.

The sentence felt impossible.

Because Renzo had been the first person in years to look at me like I mattered.

Before he knew anything about my family.

Before he knew what I could give him.

Before he knew my name meant something.

The final line appeared.

And trust no one who benefits from keeping you invisible.

The file closed.

Nobody spoke.

Then the server room lights flickered.

A new notification appeared.

A message.

Not from the system.

From someone else.

YOU FINALLY FOUND YOUR NAME.

Renzo immediately looked at the screen.

"Who is sending this?"

Another message appeared.

ASK YOUR MOTHER WHY SHE NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT THE NIGHT YOU DISAPPEARED.

I turned slowly.

"My disappearance?"

My mother looked terrified.

Not confused.

Terrified.

"What does that mean?"

She didn't answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because my mother had faced Conrad Priest.

She had faced fifteen years of secrets.

But this question?

This broke her.

"Mom."

She looked at me.

"I need you to understand something."

Her voice shook.

"That night..."

She stopped.

Renzo stepped closer.

"What night?"

My mother looked toward the locked door.

Then whispered:

"The night we changed your identity."

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

"My identity?"

She nodded.

"You weren't hidden because you were powerless."

A pause.

"You were hidden because someone tried to kill the person you were supposed to become."

Before I could ask another question, the server room monitor changed again.

A photograph appeared.

An old photograph.

A hospital room.

A woman holding a baby.

My mother.

Me.

And standing beside the bed...

A man I had never seen before.

Renzo moved closer.

His face changed.

Because he recognized him.

"Impossible."

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Renzo stared at the photograph.

His voice became quiet.

"That is the man who started this entire war."

The photo zoomed in.

A name appeared underneath.

VICTOR VANCE.

My father's name.

The man everyone told me had died before I was old enough to remember him.

Then a final message appeared beneath the image.

May you like

LEORA, YOUR FATHER IS ALIVE.

And the server room door unlocked by itself.
