Chapter 2 - The File That Was Never Supposed To Exist

The first screen turned black.

Then the second.

Then every single display panel surrounding the ballroom went dark at the same time.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was worse than the recording.

Because everyone in that room had just heard a woman plan the destruction of one of the most powerful businessmen in the city.

And now something else was happening.

Something nobody expected.

A small white icon appeared in the center of the largest screen.

A folder.

No company logo.

No presentation title.

No explanation.

Just one name.

VANCE_LEDGER.

My stomach tightened.

I had never created that file.

I had never seen that file.

And yet every person in the ballroom was looking at it.

Renzo noticed my reaction immediately.

That was the first thing I learned about him.

He watched people, not just situations.

"What is that?" he asked.

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard him.

I looked at the screen.

"I don't know."

Gianna laughed.

Not because she was amused.

Because she was scared.

"You expect everyone to believe that?"

Her voice was louder now.

More desperate.

"She has been hiding things from this family for years."

I looked at her.

For years, I had wanted her to admit that I existed.

Now she was finally saying my name.

But only because she needed someone to blame.

Renzo did not look at Gianna.

He kept watching me.

"You manage the Priest family's financial holdings."

It wasn't a question.

It was a statement.

I nodded.

"Yes."

"How many people have access to those records?"

I looked around the room.

At Conrad Priest.

At Gianna.

At Tarquin.

At the people who had smiled at me for years while pretending they didn't know who I was.

"Very few."

"Names."

The room became uncomfortable.

Because everyone knew what Renzo was doing.

He wasn't creating a scene.

He wasn't yelling.

He was investigating.

And somehow that was more intimidating.

I swallowed.

"Conrad Priest. Gianna Priest. The external accounting firm. And me."

Renzo's eyes moved toward Conrad.

The older man had been silent since the recording started.

That bothered me.

A lot.

Because Conrad Priest was not a man who stayed quiet when his reputation was threatened.

But tonight?

He looked afraid.

The screen flickered again.

The folder opened.

One document appeared.

A financial transfer report.

My own handwriting was visible in the approval section.

Except I had never approved it.

I stepped closer.

"No."

Renzo looked at me.

"You recognize it?"

I stared at the screen.

The numbers.

The dates.

The signatures.

Everything looked almost perfect.

Almost.

But there was one detail nobody else would notice.

A tiny formatting error.

A space between two digits.

A mistake I had made only once in my entire career.

A mistake someone copied.

"This wasn't created by me."

Gianna immediately smiled.

"There it is."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at me.

"She's admitting it."

"No."

My voice came out stronger than I expected.

"I said it wasn't created by me."

Renzo walked toward the screen.

"Explain."

I took a breath.

The old version of me would have stayed quiet.

The old version of me would have let someone else speak.

But that woman was gone.

"The person who created this copied my work."

I looked at the report.

"They copied my formatting, my review system, even my notes."

Renzo looked at the document.

"But?"

"But they didn't understand why I did it."

A few people exchanged confused looks.

I continued.

"My reports always include a verification mark in the bottom corner. It tells me which version is original."

I pointed at the screen.

"This one doesn't have it."

The ballroom became silent.

Renzo looked at me.

"You can prove it?"

"Yes."

Gianna stepped forward.

"You expect us to believe a missing mark proves anything?"

I looked at her.

"No."

I paused.

"It proves someone wanted it to look like my work."

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Renzo saw it too.

"Gianna."

She looked at him.

"Don't do this."

The words came out softer than before.

Almost like a warning.

Renzo's face remained calm.

"Do what?"

"Believe her."

Nobody moved.

Gianna looked around.

"You don't know her."

Renzo glanced at me.

"Neither did you."

That sentence hit harder than any accusation.

Because it was true.

Gianna had known me for eleven years.

But she never actually knew me.

She knew the version of me she created.

The quiet stepsister.

The assistant.

The person who would never fight back.

Tarquin suddenly stepped forward.

"We should leave."

Everyone turned.

Renzo looked at him.

"Why?"

Tarquin stopped.

"Because this is becoming a public spectacle."

Renzo smiled slightly.

Not warmly.

"Your voice was on the recording."

Tarquin's face tightened.

"You don't know the context."

"Then explain it."

Silence.

Tarquin looked away.

That was enough.

Everyone saw it.

The first crack.

Renzo turned back toward me.

"Where are the original files?"

I hesitated.

Because that was the question I had been avoiding.

"The company server."

"And?"

"My private backup."

Gianna immediately reacted.

"You have a private backup?"

There it was.

The panic.

I looked at her.

"Of course."

She stared.

"Why?"

Because I had learned something years ago.

People like Gianna erased evidence.

They changed stories.

They controlled information.

So I protected myself.

"Because important records should never exist in only one place."

Renzo nodded slowly.

Like he respected the answer.

Then something unexpected happened.

He took off his jacket.

And handed it to me.

The ballroom watched.

I looked at him, confused.

"You don't have to stand here covered in champagne."

For a second, I didn't know what to say.

It was such a small gesture.

But nobody had done something like that for me in years.

Not without expecting something.

I accepted it.

"Thank you."

His eyes stayed on mine.

"Leora."

I looked up.

"Yes?"

"Why didn't you come to me before tonight?"

The question hurt because I knew the answer.

Because I didn't believe someone like him would listen to someone like me.

But I didn't say that.

Not completely.

"I didn't know if you would believe me."

Renzo looked around the ballroom.

At everyone who had watched me be humiliated.

Then back at me.

"I believe you now."

Before I could respond, the largest screen changed again.

A new document appeared.

This time, the entire room recognized the name.

Because it wasn't mine.

It wasn't Renzo's.

It wasn't Gianna's.

It belonged to someone who had been silent all night.

CONRAD PRIEST.

The document opened.

A series of transfers appeared.

Old transfers.

Hidden transfers.

Transfers dating back eleven years.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized the first date.

It was the week I joined the Priest family business.

The week Conrad told me he trusted me.

The week Gianna started treating me like an employee.

Renzo stepped closer to the screen.

"Leora."

I couldn't answer.

Because the next line appeared.

A message attached to the file.

Written eleven years earlier.

By someone using my name.

"If anything happens to me, blame Leora Vance."

And beneath it was a signature.

Mine.

Except I had never signed it.

Then the ballroom doors locked.

And the sound system turned on again.

A woman's voice whispered my name. "Leora..."

May you like

I turned toward the speakers.

Because I knew that voice.
