Chapter 3 - The Voice Hidden Inside The Recording

"Leora..."
The voice came through the speakers again.
Soft.
Broken.
Almost like someone was afraid that even after eleven years, they could still be heard.
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I had spent years trying to forget it.
But some voices never disappear.
Especially the ones connected to the moments that changed your life.
"No..."
The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.
Renzo immediately noticed.
"You know who that is."
It wasn't a question.
I looked toward him.
The entire ballroom was watching me.
Five hundred people waiting for an explanation.
But I couldn't give them one.
Because the voice belonged to someone who was supposed to be gone.
Someone whose name nobody in the Priest family ever mentioned.
Someone who disappeared eleven years ago.
My mother.
The speakers crackled.
Then the voice continued.
"Leora, if you are hearing this, it means they finally found the file."
My heart stopped.
Nobody moved.
Not even Gianna.
For the first time that night, she looked completely terrified.
Renzo looked at her.
Then at me.
"Your mother?"
I nodded slowly.
I couldn't take my eyes away from the screen.
A video file appeared.
The title was simple.
FOR LEORA.
Created eleven years earlier.
The same year I joined the Priest family business.
The same year my entire life changed.
"Play it," Renzo said.
Nobody objected.
The ballroom screen turned on.
The image was blurry at first.
Then it focused.
A woman appeared.
Older than the last photograph I had of her.
Tired.
But alive.
My knees almost gave out.
Because for eleven years, I believed I knew the truth.
My mother had left.
That was what everyone told me.
She had disappeared because she wanted a new life.
She had abandoned me.
That was the story.
The story Gianna repeated whenever she wanted to hurt me.
"Some people leave because they don't care."
I believed it.
I hated her for it.
But now she was on the screen.
Looking directly at me.
"Leora."
Her voice shook.
"If you are watching this, I need you to understand one thing."
She looked behind the camera.
Like she was afraid someone was listening.
"I never abandoned you."
The ballroom became completely silent.
I stopped breathing.
Those words were impossible.
Because they destroyed eleven years of pain in five seconds.
My mother continued.
"They told you I left because I chose to."
She paused.
"I didn't."
Gianna suddenly stepped forward.
"Turn it off."
Nobody listened.
Renzo looked at her.
"Why?"
Her face changed.
"Because this is fake."
My mother continued speaking.
"The Priest family will tell you I was unstable."
A pause.
"They will tell you I stole money."
Another pause.
"They will tell you I betrayed them."
My fingers tightened around Renzo's jacket.
Because those accusations sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
"But the truth is, I discovered what Conrad Priest was doing with the family's accounts."
The room changed.
Everyone looked toward Conrad.
He had been silent.
Too silent.
My mother continued.
"He was moving money through hidden companies."
A document appeared beside the video.
Company names.
Account numbers.
Dates.
Everything.
My eyes moved across the information.
And then I saw it.
A signature.
Conrad Priest.
"Your mother was a thief."
Gianna's voice cut through the room.
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed toward the screen.
"She stole from us."
I looked at Gianna.
And for the first time, I saw something clearly.
She wasn't angry.
She was scared.
"You knew about this."
My voice surprised even me.
Gianna's expression hardened.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"No."
I stepped forward.
"I know exactly what I'm talking about."
Renzo watched me carefully.
"You recognized the accounts."
I nodded.
"Some of them."
"Explain."
I looked at the screen.
Then at the guests.
Then at the people who had spent years making me feel like I didn't belong.
"My mother wasn't investigating random transactions."
I pointed toward the documents.
"She was following the same transfers I found tonight."
Conrad finally spoke.
"Enough."
His voice was powerful.
The kind of voice that made employees immediately obey.
But nobody moved.
Because the room had changed.
Everyone had seen too much.
"You don't understand what you're accusing me of."
I looked at him.
"No."
I said quietly.
"I understand exactly."
The screen changed again.
Another file opened.
This one was audio.
The timestamp appeared.
Eleven years earlier.
The same night my mother disappeared.
Everyone saw it.
Everyone understood.
This was not something created tonight.
This was a secret that had been waiting.
The audio started.
A man's voice.
Conrad.
"I told you what happens when people ask questions."
A woman's voice answered.
My mother's voice.
"You can't erase everything."
Conrad replied.
"No."
A pause.
"But I can erase you."
The room erupted.
People whispered.
Phones came out.
Security moved.
And for the first time all night, Conrad Priest looked nervous.
Renzo didn't move.
But I saw his hand tighten.
He was angry.
Not loudly.
Not emotionally.
The dangerous kind of angry.
The kind that stayed controlled.
The audio continued.
My mother's voice became quieter.
"If anything happens to me, Leora will find the truth."
A pause.
Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.
"Because she is the only person in this family who never wanted power."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked down.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
Something small.
Something I had ignored for years.
The night my mother disappeared, she left me a necklace.
A simple silver necklace.
She told me:
"Never let anyone convince you that being quiet means being weak."
I had always thought it was goodbye.
Now I wondered if it was a warning.
Renzo walked closer.
"Leora."
I looked at him.
"Where is the necklace?"
The question confused me.
"What?"
"The necklace your mother gave you."
I stared.
"How do you know about that?"
For the first time that night, Renzo looked uncertain.
Not afraid.
But surprised.
"Because I saw it before."
My heart tightened.
"When?"
He didn't answer immediately.
And that scared me more than anything else.
"Renzo?"
He looked toward Conrad.
Then back at me.
"Eleven years ago."
The words hit me.
"You knew my mother?"
The room became silent again.
Renzo didn't deny it.
"I met her once."
"Once?"
His jaw tightened.
"She came to me because she needed help."
I couldn't move.
"Help with what?"
Renzo looked at the screen.
At my mother's face.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
"She wasn't running away from the Priest family."
A pause.
"She was running from someone inside it."
I felt cold.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Because at that exact moment, the ballroom doors unlocked.
Slowly.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Tired.
Holding a small black folder.
Every person in the room recognized her.
Including me.
Because I had seen her face every day of my childhood.
Before she disappeared.
Before everyone told me she was gone.
My mother looked directly at me.
And whispered:
"Leora..."
She stepped inside.
"I’m sorry it took me this long."
Then she looked at Renzo.
May you like
And her expression changed.
"Because you were never supposed to tell her the truth."
