Chapter 4 - The Name Hidden Behind The Door

The study door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For a few seconds, the only sound was the old wooden hinges complaining after years of silence.

Emily stood beside me.

Her face had changed.

The calm confidence she had carried since arriving was gone.

She looked afraid.

Not of the room.

Of what was inside it.

"Margaret," she whispered.

I looked at her.

"What?"

"Stay behind me."

Those words almost made me smile.

I had spent my entire life protecting people.

My daughter.

My husband.

My family.

I wasn't used to someone trying to protect me.

But I listened.

Because something about that room felt wrong.

Not dangerous.

Familiar.

Like a part of my own home had been waiting for me.

Emily stepped forward.

The light from the hallway entered the study slowly.

I saw Michael's old desk.

His books.

His chair.

Everything was exactly where I remembered.

Except one thing.

The drawer of his desk was open.

I froze.

Nobody had touched that desk after Michael died.

Nobody.

Not even Jessica.

"Who is inside?" I asked.

Emily didn't answer.

She walked closer.

I followed.

The room smelled exactly the same.

Old paper.

Wood.

Michael's cologne that somehow remained after all these years.

That smell almost broke me.

Because for a moment, I forgot why I was there.

For a moment, I expected him to turn around and tell me everything was okay.

Then I saw the empty space on his desk.

The wooden box was gone.

The small box where Michael kept his personal belongings.

The one thing I never opened after his death.

"It's missing," I whispered.

Emily looked at me.

"What?"

"The box."

She looked around.

"Are you sure?"

"I would know."

I walked toward the desk.

My hand touched the surface.

A layer of dust covered everything.

Except one small area.

Someone had recently moved something.

Someone had been here.

"Daniel," I said.

Emily looked at me.

"You think he took it?"

"I don't know."

But deep inside, I already had a feeling.

Daniel wasn't looking for random documents.

He was looking for something specific.

Something he knew existed.

Something Jessica didn't know about.

I opened the desk drawer.

Inside were old pens.

Old receipts.

A photograph.

I picked it up.

It was a picture of me and Michael.

Our wedding day.

I smiled despite everything.

"You kept this here."

My voice became quiet.

"He always said this was his favorite picture."

Emily watched me.

"He talked about you often."

I looked at her.

"Then why did he leave secrets?"

Emily didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

Or because she did.

I wasn't sure anymore.

I searched through the drawer.

Then my fingers touched something underneath the wooden bottom.

A small metal piece.

I pressed it.

A hidden section opened.

Inside was another envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Michael's handwriting.

But this time, there was something else.

A warning.

"Only open this if Jessica has betrayed you."

My hands went cold.

Emily stepped closer.

"Margaret..."

I stared at the words.

My husband had written my daughter's name.

Not after a mistake.

Not after an accident.

Before.

He had considered this possibility.

He had prepared for it.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Margaret,

If you are reading this, then I was right to worry.

I stopped.

The words blurred for a moment.

I continued.

I never wanted to believe our daughter would choose money over family. But I also knew that love can sometimes make us ignore what is in front of us.

I closed my eyes.

Because that was exactly what I had done.

I ignored small things.

The way Jessica became distant after college.

The way she called mostly when she needed help.

The way every conversation somehow became about money.

I wanted to believe she was struggling.

Not selfish.

Michael continued.

The house contains something valuable, but not because of its price. The value comes from what it proves.

I looked at Emily.

"What does that mean?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

I kept reading.

There are documents hidden in the house. They prove what happened years ago. They prove who truly owns what was built.

My heart started beating faster.

Documents.

Again.

But these weren't about the house.

They were about something older.

Something Michael had protected.

The next sentence stopped me.

If Jessica ever sells the property without your permission, do not fight her immediately.

I frowned.

Why?

Because she will reveal the truth herself.

I looked up.

"What does that mean?"

Emily stepped closer.

I did.

The person who buys the house will eventually discover the truth. Trust them. They will know what to do.

I looked at Emily.

A strange feeling moved through me.

"You."

She looked uncomfortable.

"Michael knew you would buy the house?"

"No."

"Then why would he mention the buyer?"

Emily was silent.

Then she said:

"Because he knew my father might sell it."

I turned.

"Your father?"

She nodded.

"My father owned the company that helped build this neighborhood."

I waited.

There was more.

"There was a legal dispute years ago."

"With who?"

Emily looked at the letter.

"With Michael."

I froze.

"My husband fought your father?"

"Yes."

"And you still helped me?"

Emily looked directly at me.

"Because Michael was right."

The answer confused me.

"Right about what?"

Before she could respond, a sound came from downstairs.

A door closing.

We both stopped.

Someone was inside the house.

Again.

But this time...

we heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Coming toward the study.

Emily immediately turned off the light.

She grabbed my arm.

"Don't speak."

We stood in darkness.

The footsteps got closer.

One step.

Then another.

I could hear breathing.

Someone was right outside the door.

My heart raced.

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone was trying to enter.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice I knew.

A voice I never expected to hear here.

"Mom."

I froze.

Jessica.

Emily looked at me.

The door opened slightly.

Jessica stood there.

But she wasn't alone.

Behind her was Daniel.

And in his hand was the wooden box from Michael's desk.

Jessica looked at me and whispered:

"I know what Dad hid."
