Chapter 11 - The Brother I Never Had

The voice came from the doorway.
"Margaret."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because my mind was fighting with my eyes.
The man standing there looked older.
Much older.
But I knew him.
Not from memory.
From the pieces of a life I had spent decades trying to understand.
The shape of his face.
The way he stood.
The slight tilt of his head.
Everything felt familiar.
But impossible.
"David."
The name left my mouth before I realized I had said it.
The man smiled sadly.
"At least you remember my name."
My hands became cold.
I looked around the room.
Everyone was watching me.
Jessica.
Emily.
Robert.
Daniel.
Richard.
Everyone knew something I didn't.
Again.
"Who are you?"
My voice sounded strange.
The man stepped inside.
"I already told you."
"You are not my brother."
The room became silent.
David looked at me.
Then he slowly nodded.
"No."
A pause.
"I never was."
Those words should have shocked me.
But somehow, they felt like the final piece of a puzzle I had been afraid to finish.
I looked at Robert.
"You knew."
Robert lowered his eyes.
Richard looked away.
Even Jessica looked like she was hearing the truth for the first time.
"Then who were you?"
David walked closer.
"My name is Daniel Vale."
Emily froze.
"Vale?"
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"No."
David looked at him.
"You thought I was gone."
Richard's face changed.
"You were supposed to be."
I felt the tension in the room shift.
This wasn't a family secret anymore.
This was something much bigger.
"You are Thomas Vale's son?"
David nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at Emily.
She looked confused.
"My father had a son?"
David smiled without happiness.
"Your father had many secrets."
I almost laughed.
Everyone in my life seemed to have secrets.
Everyone except me.
And now I wasn't even sure that was true.
I looked at David.
"Why did you pretend to be my brother?"
He looked at me.
"Because Michael asked me to."
My heart stopped.
"Michael?"
Jessica whispered:
"Dad knew?"
David nodded.
"He was the only person who knew the entire truth."
I looked at the photograph.
The documents.
The letters.
Everything.
"Why?"
David sat down.
For the first time, he looked tired.
Not dangerous.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
"Because years ago, my father and Michael discovered someone was stealing from the Vale company."
Emily crossed her arms.
"Who?"
David looked at Robert.
Robert closed his eyes.
Again.
That reaction told me everything.
"No."
I shook my head.
"Robert?"
He looked at me.
"I was trying to fix it."
My voice broke.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"You knew enough to hide it from me."
Robert looked ashamed.
"I thought I was protecting Michael's family."
I stared at him.
"Everyone says that."
David continued.
"The person stealing from the company wasn't just after money."
"Then what did they want?"
David looked at Jessica.
"They wanted Claire."
Jessica stepped backward.
"Me?"
He nodded.
"Your biological mother found evidence against them."
"Who?"
David looked at me.
"Your brother."
I corrected him.
"You mean the man who pretended to be my brother."
David nodded.
"The man who erased his own identity to get close to Michael."
The room became quiet.
I remembered.
Small things.
Things I had ignored.
My "brother" always asking about Michael's work.
Always asking about the house.
Always asking about Jessica.
I thought he cared.
I thought he was family.
But he was watching.
"Why didn't I remember?"
David looked at me.
"Because Michael protected you."
"By lying?"
"By surviving."
The answer hurt.
Because part of me understood.
And part of me hated understanding.
"What happened to my memories?"
David looked toward Richard.
"Tell her."
Richard hesitated.
Then he spoke.
"After Michael discovered the truth, he realized your brother would come after you next."
"So he made me forget?"
Richard nodded.
"He worked with doctors he trusted. He removed the memories connected to certain events."
I stared at him.
"That sounds impossible."
"It was risky."
"But it happened."
Nobody answered.
Because it did.
I looked at Jessica.
"My whole life was built on a lie."
She shook her head.
"No, Mom."
I looked at her.
She stepped closer.
"Not everything."
Her voice broke.
"You loved me."
I didn't speak.
"You raised me."
Tears filled her eyes.
"You chose me."
Those words reached somewhere inside me.
Somewhere untouched by anger.
Because she was right.
Whatever name she had.
Whatever past she carried.
She was still the little girl who held my hand.
The little girl who called me Mom.
I looked away.
Because forgiving someone was not the same as forgetting.
And I wasn't ready to forget.
Then David placed something on the desk.
A small black drive.
"What is that?"
"The final evidence."
Robert looked alarmed.
"No."
David turned.
"You knew this day would come."
Robert stepped forward.
"Michael wanted it destroyed."
David shook his head.
"No. Michael wanted Margaret to choose."
I looked at the drive.
"What is inside?"
David looked at me.
"Everything."
"Everything about what?"
He paused.
Then answered:
"About who sold your house."
The room became silent.
My eyes moved toward Jessica.
Then Daniel.
Then Robert.
The answer was somewhere in that room.
I felt it.
David connected the drive to the laptop on Michael's desk.
A folder appeared.
One file.
Only one.
The title was:
"THE PERSON WHO BETRAYED MARGARET."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
David looked at me.
"You need to see this."
I clicked the file.
The screen went black.
Then a video appeared.
Michael was sitting in front of the camera.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My heart broke.
Because I hadn't seen his face move in years.
His voice filled the room.
"Margaret, if you are watching this..."
He paused.
And looked directly into the camera.
"...then the person who betrayed you is standing very close to you."
I covered my mouth.
Michael continued.
"There is one person you must never trust."
The video stopped.
A second file appeared automatically.
A name.
The name that made Robert step backward.
The name that made Jessica scream.
Because the person Michael warned me about...
was not Daniel.
It was not David.
It was not Richard.
It was someone I had invited into my home for decades.
May you like
The screen displayed one word.
ROBERT.
