Chapter 10 - The Man Behind The Secret

The voice came from downstairs.

"Daniel."

Nobody moved.

Because everyone in the room recognized the fear on Daniel's face.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

I watched my son-in-law stare toward the hallway.

The man who had always acted like he controlled every situation suddenly looked like a child waiting to be punished.

Jessica noticed too.

"Daniel."

He didn't answer.

"Who is that?"

His lips moved.

But no words came out.

Then the footsteps started.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming closer.

Robert stepped backward.

Emily looked at me.

"Margaret, we need to leave."

But I didn't move.

Not this time.

I had spent too many years walking away from things I didn't understand.

I spent years believing other people knew what was best for me.

Michael.

Robert.

Jessica.

Everyone had made decisions around me.

Everyone had protected me from the truth.

And every secret had cost me something.

My home.

My trust.

My family.

I wasn't leaving.

The man appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Older.

Gray hair.

A tired face.

But there was something familiar about him.

Not because I knew him.

Because I had seen him before.

In old photographs.

In documents.

In Michael's notes.

Daniel's father.

The man connected to everything.

He looked up at us.

His eyes stopped on Daniel.

"You were told not to come here."

Daniel swallowed.

"I didn't know you were alive."

The man's expression didn't change.

"That's because you were never supposed to know."

Jessica stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at her.

And his face softened.

For a second.

Only a second.

Like he was looking at someone from the past.

Then he said:

"My name is Richard Cross."

Emily immediately froze.

"Cross."

Richard looked at her.

"Yes."

Her voice became quiet.

"You were my father's business partner."

He nodded.

"Before he betrayed me."

The room became silent.

I looked at Daniel.

His father.

The person connected to Jessica's forgotten past.

The person Michael feared.

The person who had been hiding for years.

I stepped forward.

"Why are you here?"

Richard looked at me.

"Because Michael is gone."

The way he said it bothered me.

Not with sadness.

With regret.

"You knew my husband."

"Yes."

"How?"

He looked around the study.

"This room contains everything that ended our lives."

I frowned.

"Explain."

Richard walked toward the desk.

Daniel immediately said:

"Father, stop."

Everyone turned.

Richard looked at him.

"You have no right to tell me what to do."

That sentence revealed something.

Their relationship wasn't simple.

Daniel wasn't working with him.

He was afraid of him.

Richard touched Michael's old chair.

"Michael and I were friends once."

I looked at him.

"Then why did you destroy everything he built?"

His face changed.

"I didn't."

"Someone did."

The answer surprised me.

Richard looked toward Robert.

Everyone followed his eyes.

Robert became pale.

"No."

Richard smiled sadly.

"You still defend him?"

I looked at Robert.

"What does he mean?"

Robert didn't answer.

"Robert."

His shoulders dropped.

"I made mistakes."

I felt my heart sink.

"More secrets?"

Robert looked at me.

"I didn't betray Michael."

"Then explain."

Richard answered for him.

"Robert protected the wrong person."

I looked at Richard.

"Who?"

He looked at Daniel.

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Richard continued.

"Daniel's father was not the only person hiding things."

He looked at Jessica.

"Your biological family was destroyed because someone wanted control."

Jessica whispered:

"Who?"

Richard looked at Robert.

"Tell her."

Robert closed his eyes.

"I can't."

I stared at him.

"Can't?"

"Margaret..."

"No."

My voice became firm.

"Not another person deciding what I can handle."

Robert looked broken.

Then he finally spoke.

"The person who ordered everything..."

A pause.

"Was Michael's closest investor."

Emily frowned.

"Who?"

Robert looked at me.

"Someone who had access to every document."

My stomach tightened.

"Someone who knew about the house."

Robert nodded.

"Yes."

I waited.

Then he said the name.

"Your brother."

The room went silent.

I stopped breathing.

"My brother?"

I didn't have a brother.

Not anymore.

Not for thirty years.

My older brother, David.

The man who disappeared after a family argument.

The man everyone said moved overseas.

The man Michael never mentioned.

"That's impossible."

Robert shook his head.

"It's true."

Richard stepped closer.

"David didn't disappear."

My hands went cold.

"What are you saying?"

"He changed his identity."

I looked at everyone.

"Why?"

Richard answered.

"Because he wanted what Michael had."

"What?"

"The land."

The house.

The company.

The documents.

Everything.

I felt dizzy.

"My brother caused all of this?"

Richard nodded.

"But he wasn't working alone."

I looked at him.

"Who helped him?"

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

The paper looked worn.

Like it had been carried for years.

"I found this after Michael died."

He handed it to me.

I looked at the handwriting.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

It was my own handwriting.

I looked at Richard.

"I wrote this?"

He nodded.

"No."

My confusion grew.

"Then why is my handwriting on it?"

Nobody answered.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Only one sentence.

"Margaret, if you are reading this, it means I failed to remember."

My hands started shaking.

Remember.

The word felt strange.

I continued reading.

"I need you to know that David was never your brother."

I looked up.

The room spun.

"What?"

Jessica stepped closer.

"Mom?"

I read the next line.

"He was the man who took everything from us."

I dropped the paper.

"No."

Because suddenly I remembered something.

A memory I hadn't thought about in decades.

A hospital room.

A little girl crying.

A man standing beside my bed.

A man saying:

"You don't need to remember this."

I looked at Richard.

"Why don't I remember?"

Nobody answered.

Then Richard said:

"Because Michael made sure you forgot."

My heart stopped.

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked toward the hallway.

A sound came from the front door.

Someone had entered.

Again.

But this time...

it wasn't a stranger.

A voice called from downstairs.

A voice I knew.

A voice I had not heard in thirty years.

"Margaret."

I froze.

May you like

Because the person standing at the entrance...

was the brother I thought had disappeared.
