Chapter 7 - The Person Behind Daniel's Lies

A woman stood in the basement holding a phone with a shaking hand, whispering: "Daniel knows."
When Rebecca checked the message history, she discovered a hidden conversation Daniel had kept for years. Inside were instructions, payments, and one mysterious name connected to everything. But the final message said: "Once she finds Emma, bring her to me." I suddenly realized Daniel was never acting alone.
Nobody spoke.
The message on my phone remained open.
I know, Claire.
Those three words felt heavier than any threat Daniel had ever made.
Because they meant one thing.
He wasn't surprised.
He wasn't confused.
He knew exactly where we were.
He knew about Emma.
He knew about the basement.
He knew about Claire.
And somehow, he knew we were finally putting the pieces together.
Rebecca immediately reached for my phone.
"Don't reply."
"I wasn't going to."
But my hands were shaking.
Not because I was afraid of Daniel anymore.
Something had changed.
For years, Daniel's anger controlled every room he entered.
Every conversation.
Every decision.
But now?
He was the one reacting.
The one trying to catch up.
Emma picked up the old envelope from the table.
"We need to leave."
Claire looked at her.
"No."
Everyone turned.
Claire wiped her tears.
"If we leave now, he knows we're scared."
Rebecca looked at her carefully.
"And if we stay?"
Claire looked toward the basement door.
"Then we find the rest of the truth."
I didn't expect those words from her.
Not after everything.
Not after finding her name connected to Daniel's hidden accounts.
But when I looked at Claire, I didn't see the woman who betrayed me.
I saw someone who had been afraid for years.
Someone who had been trapped too.
"Tell me everything," I said.
Claire looked at me.
"I will."
"Not later."
She nodded.
"Now."
She sat down.
And for the first time, Claire stopped protecting everyone else's secrets.
"When Emma came to me four years ago, she wasn't just trying to escape Daniel."
Emma looked down.
"She was trying to expose him."
Claire continued.
"Daniel had been moving money for years. But the money wasn't the biggest problem."
Rebecca crossed her arms.
"What was?"
Claire looked at the photograph.
"People."
The word confused me.
"People?"
Claire nodded.
"Daniel found people who had something to lose."
She looked at me.
"Like me."
Silence.
"He collected their weaknesses."
Emma spoke quietly.
"He didn't build a company."
She looked at the documents.
"He built control."
My stomach turned.
Because suddenly Daniel's behavior made sense.
The way he always knew what to say.
The way he could make people doubt themselves.
The way Lorraine defended him no matter what.
He didn't just manipulate me.
He practiced on everyone.
Rebecca picked up the photograph again.
"The person in the background."
She pointed.
"Who is it?"
Emma looked away.
"I never knew his real name."
"Then how did Daniel know him?"
Emma took a breath.
"Because he was there before Daniel had anything."
Rebecca frowned.
"Before the company?"
"Before the money."
I looked at the picture.
Daniel looked younger.
Less confident.
Almost like a different person.
"Who helped him become this?"
Emma opened the envelope.
Inside was another photograph.
A newer one.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the location.
My old house.
The one Daniel claimed was his.
The one he tried to control.
The photograph showed someone standing inside my office.
Holding my red folder.
The person was blurred.
But the clothing was clear.
A dark jacket.
A silver watch.
And a ring.
I knew that ring.
I had seen it countless times.
My breathing stopped.
"No."
Rebecca looked at me.
"You know him?"
I couldn't answer.
Because my mind was rejecting what my eyes already understood.
Emma whispered:
"You've met him."
I looked at the photograph again.
The person standing inside my office.
The person who had access to my home.
The person who had been close enough to know everything.
"Who?"
Emma looked at me.
"Your aunt's lawyer."
I froze.
"My aunt's lawyer?"
Emma nodded.
"His name is Victor Hale."
Rebecca's expression changed.
"That can't be."
"You know him?"
Rebecca didn't answer immediately.
Then she slowly nodded.
"I've heard the name."
"From where?"
"Old financial investigations."
The basement became silent.
"What kind of investigations?"
Rebecca looked at Emma.
"Fraud cases."
Emma nodded.
"Victor was the person who helped Daniel move money without leaving obvious traces."
I felt sick.
Because my aunt trusted him.
I trusted him.
He was the person who helped handle everything after my aunt died.
The person who explained the paperwork.
The person who told me my inheritance was safe.
The person who smiled and told me Daniel was lucky to have me.
All this time...
He was part of it.
My phone vibrated again.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
From Daniel.
This time there was a photo.
I opened it.
My blood ran cold.
It was a picture of our basement.
Taken moments ago.
From inside the room.
But we were standing in the basement.
So who took it?
Then another message appeared.
"You're looking in the wrong direction."
Emma stepped closer.
"Show me."
I handed her the phone.
Her face changed.
"Impossible."
"What?"
She pointed at the background.
A small detail.
A reflection in the basement window.
A person standing behind the camera.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
Emma whispered:
"Victor."
Rebecca immediately pulled out her phone.
She called a number.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then she stopped.
"What?"
She looked at the screen.
"He blocked me."
"Can he do that?"
"No."
Her face became serious.
"Someone else changed the access."
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because everything was connected.
Daniel.
Lorraine.
Victor.
Emma.
My aunt.
The house.
The company.
The money.
It wasn't random.
It was planned.
Rebecca opened the documents again.
"We need to find the original trust file."
Emma looked at her.
"Where?"
"Your aunt's law office."
Claire stood up.
"Victor has access there."
Rebecca nodded.
"Exactly."
I looked at her.
"Then we can't go there."
Rebecca looked at me.
"We have to."
"No."
Everyone looked at me.
I picked up the photograph.
For the first time, I wasn't reacting.
I was thinking.
"That's what he wants."
Rebecca paused.
"What?"
"Daniel spent years making people afraid."
I looked at Emma.
"Every time someone got close, they disappeared."
I looked at Claire.
"Or they stayed silent."
Then I looked at Rebecca.
"He expects us to follow the evidence."
Emma understood first.
"You think it's a trap."
I nodded.
Because I finally saw the pattern.
Daniel didn't hide things randomly.
He left trails.
He wanted people to find certain things.
Because every discovery led somewhere he controlled.
But there was one thing he didn't know.
I had stopped playing his game.
I opened the red folder again.
Behind the financial records was something I hadn't noticed before.
A small key.
Attached to it was a handwritten note.
Not from my aunt.
Not from Emma.
From someone else.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
Only one sentence was written.
"If you found this, Daniel already knows."
I turned the paper over.
There was another line.
"Do not go to Victor's office."
My heart stopped.
Because beneath that sentence was one final warning.
"Your aunt never trusted him."
The basement lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the power went out completely.
Emma grabbed my arm.
"Someone is here."
Rebecca turned toward the stairs.
The basement door slowly moved.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody spoke.
Then a shadow appeared above us.
May you like
And a man's voice said:
"I was wondering when you would finally find the truth."
