Chapter 5 - The Secret Behind Emma's Disappearance

A woman stood in the darkness holding her phone, whispering: "Who is there?"
When I turned on the emergency light, I discovered a broken watch near the hallway door. Inside the watch was a tiny piece of paper with Emma's name written on it. But underneath her name was another sentence: "She trusted the wrong person." I suddenly realized someone had been inside my apartment before us.
The voice disappeared.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The darkness around us felt heavier than before.
Claire stood frozen beside the table.
Rebecca held her phone like she was ready to call someone.
And I stood there, staring into the hallway where the voice had come from.
"Hello, Claire."
Two words.
A familiar voice.
A voice that shouldn't have been there.
I reached for the light switch.
Nothing happened.
The power was still out.
"Stay close," Rebecca whispered.
I almost laughed.
Because three days earlier, I was the woman who couldn't even say no to Daniel.
Now I was standing in my own apartment, searching through darkness for someone who had been watching me.
My life had changed faster than I could understand.
Rebecca turned on the flashlight from her phone.
The beam moved slowly across the hallway.
Empty.
No one.
But something was different.
The front door was still locked.
The windows were closed.
Nobody could have left without us seeing.
"Maybe they never left," Claire whispered.
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
Claire didn't answer.
And that scared me.
Because Claire always had answers.
She was the person who knew what to say.
The person who always seemed prepared.
But now she looked terrified.
Rebecca noticed too.
"You know who that was."
Claire looked away.
"Not exactly."
"Claire."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know the voice."
"Whose voice?"
She didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"After everything you've hidden from me, you don't get to stay silent now."
Claire looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Guilt.
"I thought I was protecting you."
The words hurt more than I expected.
Because they sounded exactly like something Daniel would say.
Everyone who hurt me had an explanation.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone believed they were protecting me.
"From what?"
Claire looked at the photograph on the table.
"From the truth."
Rebecca picked up the old picture again.
"Let's start with Emma."
Claire nodded slowly.
"Emma wasn't just an investor."
"What was she?"
Claire took a deep breath.
"She was Daniel's partner."
I stared at her.
"Business partner?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
The room became silent.
"She was his first wife."
My heart stopped.
I looked at Rebecca.
She looked just as shocked.
"No records show that."
"Because Daniel erased them."
I couldn't breathe.
Daniel.
A first wife.
A woman named Emma.
A company built on someone else's money.
Everything I knew about him was falling apart.
"How did you know?"
Claire looked down.
"Because Emma came to me."
"When?"
"Four years ago."
Four years.
I did the math.
That was two years into my marriage.
The same year Daniel started changing.
The same year he began hiding his phone.
The same year he started telling me business was stressful.
"What did she want?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"Help."
My voice became quiet.
"Help with what?"
"Leaving him."
The words hit me.
Because I knew that feeling.
The feeling of wanting to escape but not knowing how.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Claire looked at me.
"Because Daniel found out Emma contacted me."
I felt cold.
"What happened?"
"He warned me."
"How?"
Claire swallowed.
"He told me if I said anything, he would make sure everyone believed I was lying."
Rebecca stepped forward.
"Did he threaten you?"
Claire nodded.
"He had documents."
"What documents?"
"I don't know."
Her voice broke.
"But he knew things about my past."
I looked at her.
And suddenly, I understood.
Daniel didn't control people through kindness.
He controlled them through fear.
The same way he controlled me.
Rebecca placed the photograph on the table.
"So where is Emma now?"
Claire didn't answer.
That silence told me enough.
"You know."
Claire looked at me.
"I know where she was last seen."
"Where?"
She hesitated.
Then said:
"At Daniel's company office."
I felt my stomach tighten.
"When?"
"The night before she disappeared."
Nobody spoke.
Because we all understood what that meant.
Rebecca immediately grabbed her phone.
"I'm calling someone."
"Who?"
"The police."
I looked at her.
"Can we trust them?"
She paused.
That pause bothered me.
"Why wouldn't we?"
I remembered Daniel.
The lies.
The confidence.
The way he acted like nobody could touch him.
"Because someone helped him hide this for years."
Rebecca didn't argue.
Instead, she opened the folder again.
"We need proof."
"What kind?"
"Something connecting Daniel directly to Emma's disappearance."
Claire suddenly stood up.
"I know where it is."
We all looked at her.
"Where?"
"Daniel kept everything."
"What?"
"Records. Photos. Documents."
She looked at me.
"He always believed he was smarter than everyone."
I almost smiled.
Because that sounded exactly like him.
"He has a private storage room."
Rebecca frowned.
"Where?"
"At the old office building."
"The company headquarters?"
Claire nodded.
"Nobody goes there anymore."
"Why?"
Claire looked at me.
"Because that's where Emma disappeared."
The room went quiet.
I looked at the photograph.
Daniel.
Emma.
Lorraine.
A secret that had been buried for years.
"We go tonight," Rebecca said.
I looked at her.
"Tonight?"
"If Daniel realizes we know about Emma, whatever evidence remains could disappear."
She was right.
For years, Daniel had been cleaning up his mistakes.
Deleting.
Manipulating.
Controlling.
But he had made one mistake.
He underestimated me.
We left my apartment twenty minutes later.
Claire drove.
Rebecca sat beside her.
I sat in the back seat holding the red folder.
The entire way, nobody spoke.
The city passed outside the window.
People walked.
Cars moved.
Everyone continued their normal lives.
Nobody knew that my entire marriage had been built on a lie.
When we arrived at the old office building, it looked abandoned.
The sign had been removed.
The windows were dark.
But Claire knew exactly where to go.
The basement entrance.
"You've been here before," I said.
She stopped.
"Once."
"When?"
"The night Emma disappeared."
I stared at her.
"You were here?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"Then tell me what happened."
She didn't answer until we reached the door.
"I came because Emma called me."
"And?"
Claire touched the handle.
"When I arrived..."
She stopped.
"What?"
Her face changed.
"Daniel was already there."
Rebecca stepped closer.
"What did you see?"
Claire looked at the door.
"I saw Emma's phone on the floor."
My breathing slowed.
"And Daniel?"
Claire whispered:
"He wasn't alone."
The basement door was locked.
Rebecca pulled out a small tool.
After several seconds, the lock clicked.
The door opened slightly.
Cold air escaped from inside.
I lifted my phone flashlight.
The basement was filled with old boxes.
Broken furniture.
Dust.
And files.
Hundreds of files.
Rebecca walked inside.
"Someone has been here recently."
I looked down.
There were fresh footprints on the floor.
Not ours.
Someone had entered before us.
Claire picked up a folder from a table.
Her hands started shaking.
"What?"
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Emma.
Standing in the same basement.
But behind her was someone else.
Someone whose face had been cut out.
Rebecca grabbed the photo.
"This was hidden for a reason."
I looked around the room.
Every instinct told me to leave.
But something kept pulling me forward.
The truth.
The thing Daniel had spent years hiding.
I opened another box.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Letters.
And a small envelope with my name written across it.
My blood ran cold.
I touched it.
Because nobody should have known we would find this.
Nobody except the person who put it there.
I slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Five words.
I read them out loud.
"She never disappeared. She escaped."
Rebecca looked at me.
"Who wrote that?"
Before I could answer, the basement lights suddenly turned on.
A figure stood at the top of the stairs.
May you like
And the voice said:
"Because I helped her escape."
