Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Helped Emma Escape

A woman stood at the bottom of the basement stairs holding an old photograph, whispering: "Daniel didn't tell you the truth."

When I looked closer, I discovered the person standing in the doorway was someone connected to Emma's disappearance. In her hand was a missing page from Daniel's private records. But at the bottom of the page was one sentence: "Emma was never running from Daniel." I suddenly realized she had been hiding from someone else.

Nobody moved.

The woman standing at the top of the stairs looked nothing like the person I expected to see.

She wasn't Daniel.

She wasn't Lorraine.

She wasn't someone sent to threaten us.

She was older.

Her hair was tied back.

Her face showed years of exhaustion.

But there was something familiar about her.

Something I couldn't explain.

She slowly walked down the stairs.

Claire took a step backward.

"No."

The woman stopped.

"Claire."

That single word changed everything.

Claire looked like she had seen a ghost.

"You can't be here."

The woman gave a sad smile.

"I had to be."

Rebecca immediately moved in front of me.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at the photograph in my hand.

Then at me.

"My name is Emma."

The basement seemed to become completely silent.

I stared at her.

The name that had been hidden in documents.

The name written on photographs.

The name Daniel tried to erase.

Emma.

She was standing right in front of me.

Alive.

After all these years.

My first reaction wasn't anger.

It wasn't even shock.

It was confusion.

Because I had spent days imagining every possibility.

I thought Emma was a victim.

I thought she was gone.

I thought Daniel had destroyed her life.

But I never imagined she would walk out of the darkness herself.

"You knew about me?"

Emma asked.

I looked at her.

"What?"

"You knew my name."

I held up the photograph.

"Because everyone kept hiding it."

Her eyes moved to Claire.

And Claire looked away.

"You told her."

Emma's voice wasn't angry.

It was disappointed.

Claire swallowed.

"I didn't have a choice."

Emma looked at her.

"You always say that."

The tension between them was impossible to ignore.

Rebecca stepped forward.

"Start explaining."

Emma nodded.

"I owe her the truth."

She looked at me.

"All of it."

I didn't say anything.

Because I wanted answers.

But I also knew something.

Every person who entered my life recently had a version of the truth.

Daniel had his.

Lorraine had hers.

Claire had hers.

Now Emma had hers.

I was tired of choosing which lie sounded better.

Emma walked toward an old table.

She placed a small box on top.

"I kept these because I knew one day someone would need them."

Rebecca opened it carefully.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

A small recording device.

And a wedding ring.

I looked at the ring.

"Is that yours?"

Emma nodded.

"Daniel gave it to me."

My chest tightened.

"He was married before."

Emma looked at me.

"Yes."

"And then he married me?"

She shook her head.

"No."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Daniel never divorced me."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Rebecca immediately looked at the documents.

"Are you sure?"

Emma nodded.

"I have the records."

She pulled out a paper.

"My marriage to Daniel was never legally ended."

I stared.

Because suddenly my entire marriage became something different.

Not just betrayal.

Not just lies.

A carefully constructed illusion.

"I don't understand."

Emma looked at me.

"Daniel needed a new identity."

"Why?"

"Because of the money."

Of course.

The money.

Everything always came back to money.

Emma sat down.

"When I met Daniel, he wasn't wealthy."

Rebecca looked at the documents.

"He used your investment."

Emma nodded.

"I believed in him."

Her voice became quieter.

"I gave him access to my company accounts."

I thought about my own inheritance.

My own trust.

My own money.

The pattern was impossible to ignore.

"He did the same thing to me."

Emma looked at me.

"No."

Her answer was immediate.

"He did worse to you."

I felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Emma looked toward the stairs.

"Daniel doesn't just take money."

She paused.

"He takes people's identities."

Nobody spoke.

Emma continued.

"When he realized I was investigating the missing funds, he started preparing."

"Preparing for what?"

"To disappear."

Claire looked down.

"I knew."

I turned toward her.

"You knew?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I knew he was planning something."

"And you still said nothing?"

"I tried."

"No."

My voice became sharper.

"You protected him."

Claire shook her head.

"I protected you."

I laughed quietly.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Claire looked devastated.

But I couldn't stop.

"Everyone says they're protecting me while they let me stay trapped."

The silence afterward was painful.

Because it was true.

Emma looked at me.

"She's telling the truth about one thing."

I looked at her.

"Daniel was dangerous."

Rebecca crossed her arms.

"Then why didn't you go to the police?"

Emma looked away.

"Because I did."

That surprised everyone.

"What happened?"

"I reported the financial fraud."

"And?"

Emma's face changed.

"The evidence disappeared."

Rebecca frowned.

"How?"

Emma looked at her.

"Because someone inside the investigation was connected to Daniel."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Who?"

Emma shook her head.

"I never found out."

The basement suddenly felt smaller.

Because if Emma was right, Daniel hadn't survived because he was lucky.

He survived because someone helped him.

Someone powerful.

Rebecca picked up another document.

"These records show transfers."

She looked at Emma.

"Where did this money go?"

Emma pointed to one line.

My eyes followed.

Then stopped.

The account holder's name was visible.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

Because it wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Lorraine.

It wasn't a company.

It was someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had sat beside me and listened to me cry.

I looked at Claire.

She immediately shook her head.

"No."

I couldn't speak.

Because the evidence was there.

The name.

The account.

The connection.

Emma looked at me.

"Now you understand why I stayed hidden."

I stared at Claire.

"Tell me it's not true."

Claire's face went pale.

"I can explain."

Those words.

The same words everyone used before another secret came out.

Rebecca stepped closer to the document.

"Claire."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I didn't take the money."

"Then why is your name connected to the account?"

Claire looked at me.

And tears finally fell.

"Because Daniel forced me."

The basement went silent again.

"What?"

Claire wiped her face.

"Years ago, Daniel threatened me."

"With what?"

"With the same thing he threatened everyone with."

She looked at me.

"My past."

I didn't know what to believe anymore.

Emma reached into the box.

She pulled out another envelope.

"This is why I came here tonight."

Rebecca looked at it.

"What is it?"

Emma handed it to me.

"My final message."

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not Emma's.

Mine.

"What does this have to do with me?"

Emma looked at the basement door.

"Because Daniel wasn't the person who started all of this."

My hands tightened around the envelope.

"Who was?"

Emma didn't answer.

Instead, she pointed toward the photograph on the table.

The one showing Daniel, Emma, and Lorraine.

"Look at Lorraine."

I stared at the picture.

Then I noticed something I hadn't seen before.

Behind them.

In the reflection of the glass door.

There was another person.

Someone standing in the background.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

Emma whispered:

"That person is the reason Daniel never got caught."

Rebecca grabbed the photograph.

"Who is that?"

Emma looked at me.

And quietly said:

"The person who taught Daniel how to hide everything."

Before anyone could react...

my phone lit up.

A new message.

From Daniel.

Only three words.

"I know, Claire."

May you like

And then another message appeared.

"He is coming for all of you."
