Chapter 7 - The Truth Hidden In My Mother’s Death

The door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The person standing outside held an old photograph in his hand.
The same photograph my father had shown through the security camera.
But this time, I could see the face.
A woman.
An older woman with tears in her eyes.
A woman I thought had been gone for twenty years.
My hands went cold.
Because I knew her.
"Mom?"
The word left my mouth before my mind could stop it.
The woman standing outside looked at me like she had been waiting her entire life for that one word.
My mother.
Linda Vale.
The woman whose funeral I attended when I was twenty-two.
The woman whose death destroyed our family.
The woman Marcus and I had buried together.
She stepped inside slowly.
Her eyes moved around the house.
The walls.
The photographs.
The life I built after losing everyone.
Then she looked back at me.
"I'm sorry, Daniel."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't understand.
My entire life had been built around losses.
My father died.
My mother died.
My brother died.
That was the story I had carried for decades.
But now all three of them were standing in front of me.
Alive.
I looked at Marcus.
He couldn't look at me.
That hurt more than anything.
Because Marcus had known.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
"You knew."
My voice was quiet.
Marcus swallowed.
"Daniel..."
"You knew she was alive."
"No."
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
"I didn't know."
I looked between him and my mother.
"Then explain this."
Nobody spoke.
The silence told me there was a story nobody wanted to tell.
I stepped toward my mother.
"Why?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I was trying to protect you."
I almost laughed.
Everyone said the same thing.
Protect you.
Protect you.
Protect you.
But nobody ever asked what it felt like to be the person left behind.
"From what?"
My mother looked at Marcus.
Then at Emily.
Then finally at me.
"From your father."
I looked toward the window.
Richard was still outside.
Watching.
Waiting.
The man who had controlled my entire family from the shadows.
I turned back.
"What did he do?"
My mother's hands started shaking.
"Your father built an empire around secrets."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Daniel, you need to hear everything."
I looked at him.
"Now you want honesty?"
His face dropped.
I continued.
"I spent fifteen years believing I lost you."
My voice became harder.
"I visited your grave."
Marcus looked down.
"I know."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You don't know."
The room became silent.
"You don't know what it feels like to stand in front of a stone with your brother's name on it and wonder if you should have done something differently."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I know I hurt you."
"You destroyed me."
The words came out before I could stop them.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my mother walked closer.
"Daniel."
I looked at her.
She whispered:
"Marcus didn't leave because he wanted to."
I looked at him.
"Then why?"
My mother answered.
"Because he found out the truth about your death."
I froze.
"My death?"
She nodded.
"The night I was supposed to die."
The room felt colder.
I looked at Marcus.
"What does that mean?"
He finally looked at me.
"When our mother died, everyone believed it was an accident."
My father’s voice came back to my mind.
Ask him about the night your mother died.
I felt my chest tighten.
"It wasn't."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
I stared at him.
"Then what happened?"
He looked toward my mother.
She took a deep breath.
"Your father discovered Marcus was investigating the foundation."
I nodded slowly.
"So he killed you?"
My mother looked away.
"Not directly."
That answer scared me more.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus walked to the desk.
He picked up one of the old files.
"The foundation had people everywhere."
He opened the folder.
"Doctors."
"Lawyers."
"Police."
"Business partners."
My stomach tightened.
"They controlled everything."
Marcus pointed at the documents.
"Our father created a system where nobody could touch him."
I looked at my mother.
"And you found out?"
She nodded.
"I found financial records."
"About what?"
Her voice became quiet.
"The missing children."
My entire body went still.
The same thing Marcus had investigated.
The same thing connected to Lily.
"You knew about them?"
My mother nodded.
"Before Marcus did."
I looked at Lily.
The little girl was standing silently.
Listening.
"My God."
I sat down.
All these years.
All these missing people.
All these secrets.
They all connected.
My father.
The foundation.
Marcus.
Lily.
My nephews.
Everything.
My mother sat across from me.
"Your father discovered I knew."
"What happened next?"
She looked at Marcus.
"He told Marcus I was dead."
I frowned.
"What?"
Marcus spoke.
"He wanted me to believe our mother was gone so I would stop looking."
"But you didn't."
"No."
He shook his head.
"I investigated."
"Then what?"
"Then I found her."
I looked at my mother.
"You were alive all this time?"
She nodded.
"Hidden."
"By who?"
Marcus answered.
"By Eleanor."
I looked at Lily.
Her mother.
The woman who had protected Marcus.
The woman who knew the truth.
My mind raced.
"Then why didn't you come back?"
My mother looked at me.
Because that was the question that hurt the most.
The question I had carried for twenty years.
"Because your father told me he would destroy you."
I froze.
"He threatened you with me?"
She nodded.
"He said if I returned, you would become his next target."
I looked toward the front door.
Richard.
My father.
The man outside.
The man who had taken my family away one person at a time.
Then the lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
The security monitors turned back on.
A message appeared.
Not from Marcus.
Not from my father.
From someone else.
A video file.
The title appeared.
"FOR DANIEL — FROM YOUR MOTHER."
My mother looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
"I never recorded that."
Marcus stepped closer.
"What?"
She shook her head.
"That wasn't made by me."
The video started automatically.
A younger version of my mother appeared on the screen.
Twenty years younger.
Sitting in a dark room.
Looking directly into the camera.
Her voice trembled.
"Daniel, if you are watching this..."
She stopped.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Then they found me."
I looked at my mother beside me.
She was watching herself on the screen.
Confused.
Afraid.
The younger version of her continued.
"Do not trust Marcus."
Everyone froze.
Marcus stepped back.
The video glitched.
Then my younger mother's final words appeared.
"Because the person who helped me disappear..."
The screen went black.
A new image appeared.
A photograph.
A photograph of Marcus standing beside someone.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who had been with my family for years.
May you like
And beneath the picture were four words:
"He helped them all."
