Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden Beneath My Brother’s Grave

The little girl stood at the end of the hallway holding her stuffed rabbit, whispering: "Your brother told me never to trust the person who found me."

I followed her into Marcus’s old study and discovered a hidden compartment beneath his desk. Inside was a second photograph of my brother with a woman I had never seen before. But written on the back were four words: "She knows the truth."

I realized Marcus had been hiding an entire life from me.

I moved faster than I had in years.

The moment I heard the little girl's voice from the hallway, every instinct I had built over two decades took control.

I grabbed the flashlight from the desk.

"Stay behind me," I told Emily.

She looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

That confirmed what I already suspected.

My sister knew more than she had admitted.

The hallway was empty.

The little girl was standing near the staircase, staring at the floor.

She didn't run.

She didn't scream.

She simply looked at me.

"You heard him too," she said.

I stopped.

"Who?"

She tilted her head slightly.

"Marcus."

The way she said his name made my stomach tighten.

Not like a stranger.

Not like someone repeating a name she had heard.

Like someone who knew him.

I walked closer.

"Who are you?"

She looked down at the stuffed rabbit in her arms.

"My name is Lily."

"How do you know my brother?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she pointed toward the old study.

"He wanted you to find the second room."

My eyes narrowed.

"The second room?"

She nodded.

"Behind the wall."

I looked back at Emily.

Her face had gone completely pale.

"Emily," I said slowly.

She didn't move.

"What?"

She swallowed.

"Marcus told me about that room."

My heart sank.

"You knew?"

"I didn't know where it was."

"But you knew it existed."

She looked away.

That was enough.

I walked back into the study.

The room felt different now.

Fifteen years ago, I thought I knew every inch of it.

I had searched through every drawer.

Every shelf.

Every document.

But Marcus had always been better at hiding things than I was at finding them.

I placed the metal box on the desk.

The number 15 carved into the surface seemed almost like a warning.

I looked at the key inside.

A small silver key.

Old.

Worn.

Used many times.

I walked around the room.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then I noticed something.

The bookshelf.

One section was slightly darker than the rest.

A place where dust had been disturbed.

I moved closer.

I pushed against the wooden panel.

Nothing happened.

I tried again.

A small click echoed.

The bookshelf moved.

Behind it was a narrow doorway.

Emily covered her mouth.

I stared into the darkness.

My brother had built a hidden room inside his house.

A room I never knew existed.

I turned on the flashlight.

Inside was a small office.

Not abandoned.

Not forgotten.

Used.

A desk.

A chair.

Files stacked neatly.

A computer.

And on the wall...

Photographs.

Hundreds of them.

My hands tightened.

Because every photograph showed the same thing.

Marcus watching people.

Following people.

Investigating.

My brother had been doing exactly what I did.

Finding people.

But he had been searching for someone.

I picked up the nearest file.

The cover had one name.

VALE PROJECT.

I opened it.

The first page contained a photograph of Marcus.

Below it were handwritten notes.

"Subject disappeared after discovering the truth."

I turned the page.

Another photograph.

A woman.

The same woman from the hidden picture.

I had never seen her before.

But Marcus had circled her face.

The note beside it said:

"The only person who knows where the children went."

My heart stopped.

Children.

I looked back at Lily.

Then at Noah and Liam.

A cold feeling moved through me.

The disappearance of my nephews was not random.

Someone had planned this.

I continued reading.

The files mentioned dates.

Locations.

Names.

One name appeared again and again.

Eleanor Cross.

I had never heard it before.

But Marcus had written one sentence beneath it.

"She was there the night I died."

I froze.

My fingers stopped moving.

The night Marcus died.

Except now I knew he hadn't.

I turned toward Emily.

"Who is Eleanor Cross?"

She looked like she wanted to disappear.

"Daniel..."

"Answer me."

She closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

I slammed the file onto the desk.

"Stop lying to me."

The room went silent.

Then Lily spoke.

"She was my mother."

Everyone turned toward her.

Emily looked shocked.

I stared at the little girl.

"Your mother is Eleanor Cross?"

Lily nodded.

"Marcus promised he would come back for us."

My mind struggled to understand.

"You knew Marcus?"

She nodded again.

"He took care of me."

I looked at Emily.

Then at the files.

Then back at Lily.

The impossible truth was becoming clearer.

My brother didn't disappear fifteen years ago.

He disappeared from my life.

But he had continued living.

Watching.

Protecting someone.

Building a secret world.

A world I knew nothing about.

I picked up another file.

This one was different.

No label.

No name.

Only one sentence written on the cover.

"Daniel must never find this."

My stomach tightened.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Myself.

Standing outside Marcus's funeral.

The day I buried him.

But someone had written something across my face.

A single word.

"Borrowed."

I stared at it.

"What does this mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then the computer on the desk suddenly turned on.

The screen was black.

No password.

No loading.

Just one video file appeared.

Created fifteen years ago.

The title was:

FOR DANIEL.

Emily stepped back.

"Don't open it."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because Marcus told me if you ever saw that video..."

She stopped.

"Then what?"

She whispered:

"Then you would know why he chose to leave you."

The room became silent.

I clicked the file.

The screen flickered.

Marcus appeared.

Older than the man I remembered.

Tired.

Exhausted.

But alive.

My breath caught.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Daniel."

Hearing my name from his mouth broke something inside me.

"If you are watching this, it means you found Lily."

I looked at the little girl.

She lowered her head.

Marcus continued.

"I know you have questions."

The video glitched.

Then his expression changed.

Fear appeared on his face.

Not the fear of someone hiding.

The fear of someone being hunted.

"Daniel, listen carefully."

The screen distorted.

His voice became quieter.

"The person who destroyed our family has been standing beside you for fifteen years."

I leaned closer.

The video froze.

Then restarted.

Marcus looked directly into the camera again.

And said a name.

A name that made Emily scream.

Because it was someone we both knew.

Someone who had attended my brother's funeral.

Someone who had cried beside his grave.

May you like

The screen went black.

And behind us, the hidden room door slowly began to close.
