Chapter 4 - The Secret Beneath the Ranch

Caleb Rourke had learned one important thing during his years alone.

People could lie with words.

But they couldn't lie with fear.

And the person standing in his hallway was terrified.

The shadow moved closer.

Caleb kept the rifle aimed.

"Come out."

For a moment, there was no answer.

Then a familiar voice spoke from the darkness.

"Caleb..."

His finger tightened around the trigger.

Because he knew that voice.

Not from a dream.

Not from a memory.

From his childhood.

The person slowly stepped into the light.

Caleb's heart stopped.

It was Daniel Cross.

His old ranch partner.

His best friend.

The man who had disappeared six years earlier.

The man everyone believed had died.

Caleb lowered the rifle slightly.

"Daniel?"

Daniel looked older.

His hair was gray.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But his eyes were the same.

Caleb stared at him.

"You died."

Daniel gave a small, painful smile.

"That's what they wanted everyone to believe."

Nobody spoke.

The farmhouse suddenly felt smaller.

Too many secrets.

Too many people who were supposed to be gone.

Caleb looked around the room.

His dead wife.

A hidden daughter.

A missing friend.

A stranger named Victor.

All connected to something he had never known existed.

"What is happening?"

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at Caleb's wife.

Then back at Caleb.

"You finally found the truth."

Caleb shook his head.

"No."

His voice became colder.

"I found more questions."

Daniel nodded.

"That's fair."

Caleb stepped forward.

"Start talking."

Daniel looked toward the windows.

"The people outside won't wait forever."

"Then talk faster."

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Three years ago, your wife discovered something about Black River Group."

Caleb glanced at his wife.

"What?"

Daniel continued.

"Not just illegal land deals. Not just corruption."

He paused.

"Disappearances."

The room became silent.

Caleb remembered Lily's words.

They weren't missing.

They were erased.

"How many?"

Daniel looked down.

"Too many."

Caleb's jaw tightened.

"And my wife?"

Daniel looked at her.

"She found proof."

Caleb turned.

"Proof of what?"

His wife finally spoke.

"That Black River wasn't just hiding crimes."

Her voice shook.

"They were hiding people."

Caleb stared.

"People?"

She nodded.

"People who knew too much."

A cold feeling moved through Caleb.

"So they killed you."

His wife didn't answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Caleb stepped back.

"No."

She looked at him.

"Caleb..."

"No."

His voice broke slightly.

"I watched them lower a coffin into the ground."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"I stood there."

"I know."

"I spent three years thinking I failed you."

She looked away.

"And I spent three years trying to find a way back to you."

For a moment, Caleb forgot about the danger outside.

Forgot about the vehicles.

Forgot about everything.

Because the woman in front of him was carrying the same pain he had carried.

Just in a different way.

Then Daniel interrupted.

"We don't have time."

Caleb looked at him.

"What happens now?"

Daniel walked toward the table.

He picked up the photograph Caleb had been holding.

"The message on the back was not the only thing she left."

He turned the photograph around.

"There is another clue."

Caleb frowned.

"What clue?"

Daniel looked at Lily.

"She knows."

Everyone looked at the girl.

Lily became nervous.

"My mom said I couldn't tell anyone unless we reached the ranch."

Caleb knelt beside her.

"Lily."

The girl looked at him.

"What did she tell you?"

Lily reached into her small bag.

The same bag she had been protecting since Caleb found her.

She slowly opened it.

Inside were several folded papers.

And one small recorder.

Caleb stared.

"A recorder?"

Lily nodded.

"My mom said someone would try to say she was lying."

She handed it to Caleb.

"She said you would believe her voice."

Caleb pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a sound.

Her voice.

His wife's voice.

"Caleb..."

He froze.

The recording continued.

"If you are hearing this, then Lily found you."

Caleb looked at the little girl.

His hands started shaking.

"I need you to listen carefully."

The voice became quieter.

"I couldn't tell you the truth because they were watching everyone around me."

A pause.

Then:

"Even the people closest to us."

Caleb looked at Daniel.

Then Victor.

Then his wife.

The recording continued.

"There is someone inside Black River who helped me."

Static interrupted.

Then another sentence.

"But I don't know if they are still on our side."

The recorder stopped.

Everyone remained silent.

Caleb looked at the device.

"That's it?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He pointed at the papers.

"She left something else."

Caleb unfolded the first page.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Locations.

People who had disappeared.

At the bottom was a name Caleb recognized.

A name that made his stomach drop.

Sheriff Thomas Bell.

Caleb stared.

"No."

Daniel watched him carefully.

"Yes."

Caleb looked at the page again.

The sheriff's name was there.

Along with a date.

The date was three days before his wife's death.

The same sheriff who had looked afraid when Caleb mentioned Lily.

The same sheriff who had asked where he found her.

Not who she was.

Where he found her.

Caleb finally understood.

The sheriff wasn't surprised.

He was waiting.

A sudden sound came from outside.

A vehicle door slammed.

Victor moved toward the window.

"They're coming closer."

Daniel grabbed Caleb's shoulder.

"You need to leave."

Caleb looked at him.

"Leave my home?"

"No."

Daniel looked toward Lily.

"Leave before they take her."

Caleb looked at the little girl.

The girl who had walked through the night.

The girl who had counted 512 minutes waiting for someone.

He knew one thing.

Nobody was taking her.

Not while he was alive.

Caleb grabbed his jacket.

"We go through the back."

His wife nodded.

Daniel moved toward the hallway.

But before they reached the door, a loud crash came from the front of the house.

Someone had broken the window.

Glass scattered across the floor.

Lily screamed.

Caleb pulled her behind him.

Victor grabbed the rifle from the wall.

Then they heard footsteps.

Inside the house.

Someone had entered.

Daniel looked at Caleb.

"There's another way out."

"Where?"

Daniel pointed toward the floor.

"Under the kitchen."

Caleb frowned.

"What?"

Daniel moved the old wooden table.

Underneath was a hidden metal handle.

Caleb stared.

"I've lived here twenty years."

Daniel looked at him.

"And you never knew what was underneath your own house."

The handle was covered with dust.

Like it had not been touched in years.

Caleb grabbed it.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He pulled.

The hidden door opened.

Cold air rose from below.

Then a faint light appeared from the darkness underneath.

Someone had been there recently.

Because on the stairs leading down was a fresh footprint.

And next to it was a message written on the wall.

Caleb lifted his flashlight.

The words were only four lines.

His face changed when he read them.

Because the handwriting belonged to his wife.

"Caleb."

"Don't trust Daniel."

Behind him, Daniel whispered:

"Caleb... you need to see who is down there."

May you like

And from the darkness beneath the ranch, a voice answered:

"Finally."
