Chapter 3 - The Man Who Knew the Gate

The door handle stopped moving.
For three seconds, nobody inside the farmhouse moved.
Caleb stood near the entrance with the rifle raised.
Behind him, Lily held tightly onto her mother’s coat.
And beside the window, the woman Caleb had buried three years earlier stared at the door like she was looking at a nightmare she had been running from for years.
Then came the knock.
Three slow knocks.
Not loud.
Not aggressive.
Almost polite.
That was what made Caleb more uncomfortable.
A man who came to a ranch in the middle of the night without fear was not someone who needed to force his way inside.
He already believed he belonged there.
Caleb looked at his wife.
"Who is he?"
She didn't answer.
"Tell me."
Her eyes remained fixed on the door.
"His name is Victor Hale."
Caleb frowned.
"Should I know him?"
"No."
A pause.
"That's the problem."
The words made Caleb tighten his grip on the rifle.
Outside, the man knocked again.
"Caleb Rourke."
The voice carried through the wooden walls.
Caleb froze.
The stranger knew his name.
Not just his name.
The way he said it sounded familiar.
Like someone who had studied him.
"I know you're in there," the man called.
Caleb looked at his wife.
Her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the kind she had shown when she returned.
Something deeper.
Something she had been hiding.
"How does he know me?" Caleb whispered.
She slowly answered.
"Because he was one of the people who helped create the story that I died."
Caleb stared at her.
"What?"
Before she could explain, Victor spoke again.
"Caleb, I know this is confusing."
The man’s voice remained calm.
"But you need to understand something."
A short pause.
"The girl inside your house is not who you think she is."
Lily stepped backward.
Her face turned pale.
Caleb immediately moved between her and the door.
"Don't listen to him."
His wife looked at him.
"He's lying."
But Caleb noticed something.
She didn't say Victor was wrong.
She said he was lying.
There was a difference.
Caleb looked through the small window beside the door.
The man standing outside appeared to be in his fifties.
Gray coat.
Clean boots.
No weapon visible.
A normal person.
Except normal people didn't appear at midnight on isolated ranches.
Normal people didn't know about dead women.
Normal people didn't know about hidden children.
Caleb opened the door slightly.
The chain remained locked.
"What do you want?"
Victor looked directly at him.
Even from a distance, Caleb could see the confidence in his eyes.
"I want to stop you from making the same mistake I made."
Caleb didn't like that answer.
"What mistake?"
Victor looked past him.
Toward Lily.
The moment his eyes landed on the girl, something changed.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Regret.
"You found her."
Caleb's hand tightened around the rifle.
"You know her."
Victor looked down.
"I know what happened to her mother."
Caleb opened the door a little wider.
"Then start talking."
Victor shook his head.
"Not here."
"Why?"
"Because this place is no longer safe."
Caleb almost laughed.
"My home has been here for twenty years."
Victor looked at the broken gate outside.
Then he said something that made Caleb stop.
"That gate wasn't broken when I first came here."
Caleb stared.
"What did you say?"
Victor looked back at him.
"I was there the night it was damaged."
The room became silent.
Caleb slowly lowered the rifle.
Because suddenly the broken gate wasn't just a broken gate.
It was another piece of a puzzle he didn't know existed.
"Why were you at my ranch?"
Victor didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Caleb's wife.
"You never told him."
She looked away.
Caleb turned.
"Told me what?"
Victor stepped closer to the porch.
"Ask her why she chose this ranch."
Caleb looked back at his wife.
The silence answered before she did.
"You didn't choose this place randomly, did you?"
She swallowed.
"No."
Caleb felt something inside him break.
Three years of memories.
Three years of believing he knew his own life.
Now every piece felt like it belonged to someone else.
"Why?"
His wife stepped forward.
"Because your ranch was the only place they couldn't control."
"Who is they?"
She didn't answer.
Victor did.
"The Black River Group."
Caleb frowned.
He had never heard the name.
But his wife reacted immediately.
Like hearing it spoken aloud was dangerous.
"What is that?"
Victor looked toward the darkness outside.
"A company that owns half the land in this county."
Caleb shook his head.
"I've never heard of them."
"Exactly."
Victor looked back.
"They prefer it that way."
Lily suddenly spoke.
"My mom found the files."
Everyone looked at her.
Caleb knelt beside her.
"What files?"
The girl looked nervous.
"The files about the people who disappeared."
Caleb's face changed.
"People disappeared?"
Lily nodded.
"My mom said they weren't missing."
She looked at her mother.
"She said they were erased."
Nobody spoke.
Because that word was too heavy.
Erased.
Not gone.
Not dead.
Erased.
Victor reached into his coat.
Caleb immediately raised the rifle again.
Victor stopped.
Slowly, he pulled out a small envelope.
"I came here because she left something behind."
He held the envelope toward Caleb.
"Something only you can open."
Caleb didn't move.
"Why me?"
Victor looked at the broken gate.
"Because she knew you would fix the truth before you fixed the gate."
The sentence hit harder than Caleb expected.
Because it sounded like something his wife would say.
He carefully took the envelope.
Inside was another photograph.
Caleb looked down.
His hands started shaking.
It was a picture of his wife.
Lily.
And another person.
A young man Caleb had never seen before.
But the writing on the back made his blood run cold.
"Caleb, if you're reading this, trust no one who says I died."
He turned the photograph over.
There was another line.
Short.
Simple.
Terrifying.
"Your enemy has been living beside you."
Caleb looked up.
The first person he thought about was the sheriff.
But then another thought appeared.
One that made him uncomfortable.
Because there was someone else.
Someone who had been close to him.
Someone who knew his routine.
Someone who knew the ranch.
Someone who knew the broken gate.
His wife stepped closer.
"Caleb."
He looked at her.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to protect you."
"From who?"
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because outside, Victor suddenly looked toward the road.
His face changed.
"What is it?"
Caleb asked.
Victor didn't answer.
He walked quickly away from the porch and stared into the darkness.
Then Caleb heard it.
Another engine.
Not Victor's truck.
A second vehicle.
Then a third.
The ranch was surrounded.
Victor whispered:
"They didn't follow me."
Caleb looked at him.
"Then how did they find us?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone inside already knew.
Someone had told them.
The farmhouse lights suddenly turned back on.
The little girl screamed.
Caleb turned toward the hallway.
A shadow moved across the wall.
Someone was already inside the house.
Caleb raised his rifle.
His wife covered Lily's mouth.
Then the person stepped forward from the darkness and whispered Caleb's name.
It was a voice he recognized.
May you like
A voice from his past.
A voice he never expected to hear again.
