Chapter 2 - The Voice Behind the Door

Caleb Rourke had spent three years learning how to live with silence.

But he had never expected silence to be broken by a voice that belonged to someone who was gone.

He stood frozen in the doorway of his farmhouse.

His hand was still wrapped around the old wooden handle.

The room inside looked exactly as he had left it.

The fire was still burning.

The little silver key was still on the table.

The little girl was still sitting in the chair near the window.

But she was no longer alone.

A woman stood beside her.

A woman Caleb had buried three years ago.

His wife.

"Caleb?"

The voice came again.

Soft.

Familiar.

Impossible.

His breathing stopped.

For a moment, his mind refused to understand what his eyes were seeing.

Because grief had a strange way of creating ghosts.

He had seen her in dreams.

He had heard her voice in empty rooms.

He had turned around more times than he wanted to admit because he thought someone had called his name.

But this was different.

This wasn't memory.

This wasn't a dream.

The woman standing in front of him was real.

Or at least real enough to break him.

The little girl looked between them.

"Mom?"

Caleb's eyes moved to the child.

Then back to the woman.

His face changed.

"What did you call her?"

The woman looked at the girl.

A painful expression crossed her face.

Then she looked back at Caleb.

"Her name is Lily."

Caleb took one step backward.

"No."

The woman swallowed.

"I know what you think."

"No."

"I know what it looks like."

"No."

His voice became louder.

Because saying the word was easier than accepting what was happening.

"No. You're dead."

The room became completely silent.

The woman lowered her eyes.

"I know."

Caleb stared at her.

Three years.

Three years of visiting a grave.

Three years of carrying the weight of losing her.

Three years of believing he would never hear her voice again.

And now she was standing ten feet away.

Alive.

"I went to your funeral," Caleb whispered.

The woman's eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"I watched them bury you."

"I know."

"Then explain this."

The woman looked toward Lily.

The little girl was watching Caleb carefully.

Like she already knew this moment would happen.

Like she had been waiting for it.

The woman walked slowly toward the table.

She picked up the silver key.

"You need to listen before they find us."

Caleb immediately noticed something.

She was afraid.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

That scared him more.

"Who are they?"

The woman didn't answer.

Instead, she placed the key back down.

"Three years ago, everyone believed I died."

Caleb's jaw tightened.

"Because you did."

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"Because someone wanted you to believe I did."

The words hit him harder than anything else.

Caleb looked at Lily.

The little girl lowered her head.

"Your mother told me not to tell anyone."

Caleb looked back at the woman.

"Your mother?"

The woman nodded.

"Lily is my daughter."

Caleb felt like the floor moved beneath him.

Three years.

A secret daughter.

A fake death.

A message hidden inside a child's clothing.

None of it made sense.

"Why didn't you come back?"

The woman looked away.

"Because I couldn't."

"Couldn't?"

"Because every person who tried to help me disappeared."

Caleb's anger began replacing his shock.

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

That was the part Caleb hated most.

Everyone had answers.

Nobody gave him the truth.

He grabbed the edge of the table.

"Three years ago, I lost my wife. Today, a child appears at my gate with a message warning me not to trust the sheriff. Then I walk into my house and find you standing here."

His eyes became cold.

"I think I deserve some answers."

The woman looked at him.

"You do."

She reached into her coat pocket.

Then she pulled out a small photograph.

Caleb immediately recognized the place.

His ranch.

The broken gate.

The same gate he had refused to fix.

But the photograph was older.

Much older.

On the back were handwritten words.

Caleb took it.

His hands became still.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

It was his wife's.

The message said:

"If Caleb finds Lily, it means they failed to stop the truth."

Caleb looked up.

"Who are they?"

The woman stepped closer.

"The people who wanted me gone."

"Why?"

Her eyes filled with sadness.

"Because I found out what they were doing."

"What were they doing?"

Before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The farmhouse became dark.

Lily gasped.

Caleb immediately moved toward the window.

Outside, the ranch was completely black.

No moonlight.

No movement.

Then he heard it.

A sound near the front gate.

A vehicle.

Caleb looked at his wife.

Her face had lost all color.

"They found us."

The words were barely a whisper.

Caleb grabbed the rifle beside the door.

"Stay here."

His wife shook her head.

"No."

"You're not going outside."

"You don't understand."

She stepped closer.

"If they are here, they already know Lily is with you."

Caleb looked toward the girl.

She was holding the blanket tightly.

Terrified.

Then something happened.

Something Caleb would remember for the rest of his life.

Lily stood up.

And walked toward the window.

"No."

Her mother's voice broke.

"Lily, don't."

But the girl was already looking outside.

Caleb followed her eyes.

A black truck was parked near the broken gate.

The engine was still running.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching the house.

Then the headlights turned off.

The truck door opened.

A man stepped out.

Caleb couldn't see his face.

But Lily could.

The little girl suddenly grabbed Caleb's arm.

And whispered:

"That's the man my mother was running from."

The stranger slowly walked toward the farmhouse.

Caleb tightened his grip on the rifle.

The man stopped at the bottom of the porch.

Then he looked directly at the house.

Like he knew Caleb was watching.

May you like

Like he had been waiting.

The front door handle slowly moved.
