Chapter 6 - The Empty Grave

The tracker stopped beneath the cemetery chapel.

Adrian arrived six minutes later.

Reed followed.

Marco and Julian came in a second vehicle with Claire.

Dominic was handcuffed in the back.

The cemetery had been closed for hours.

The chapel doors stood open.

No lights inside.

Adrian drew his pistol.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“My daughter.”

“I know.”

“If anything happens—”

“It won’t.”

“You can’t promise that.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I already did.”

He entered.

The chapel was empty.

Rows of wooden pews.

An altar.

A stone floor.

No Ellie.

Marco checked the rear rooms.

Nothing.

Julian found a door behind the altar.

Locked.

Dominic laughed softly from where Reed held him.

Adrian turned.

“You know what’s down there.”

Dominic said nothing.

Adrian walked toward him.

“You know.”

Dominic smiled.

“Your father had strange ideas about insurance.”

Marco found a hidden release beneath the altar.

The stone wall moved.

A staircase descended underground.

Claire whispered, “Thomas.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

She stared into the darkness.

“He told me once there was a place Lorenzo built.”

“For what?”

“Records. Meetings. Emergencies.”

Dominic said, “Graves are excellent storage. Nobody searches the dead.”

Adrian led the way down.

At the bottom, they found a steel corridor.

Lights flickered on automatically.

The walls were lined with file cabinets.

Old photographs.

Maps.

Decades of information.

Lorenzo’s hidden archive.

Claire covered her mouth.

“This is what Thomas protected.”

They followed the tracker.

The signal moved beneath them.

Another level.

Julian found an elevator.

No power.

Marco forced open a maintenance door.

Stairs.

They descended.

At the next landing, a voice came from below.

“Dad?”

Ellie.

Claire ran.

Adrian caught her.

“Wait.”

“She said Dad.”

“I heard.”

They moved slowly.

At the bottom stood a large underground chamber.

Ellie sat in a chair.

Unharmed.

Beside her stood a thin man in his early forties.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

Scar across one cheek.

Claire stopped.

Every part of her body went rigid.

“Thomas.”

Ellie looked at her mother.

“Mom?”

Thomas Hart looked at Claire.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then Claire crossed the room and slapped him.

Hard.

Thomas accepted it.

She slapped him again.

“You were dead.”

“I know.”

“You let me bury you.”

“I know.”

“You let her grow up without you.”

“I know.”

Ellie stared at him.

“You’re my dad?”

Thomas knelt.

“Yes.”

She backed away.

“No.”

His face broke.

“Ellie—”

“No.”

Claire pulled her daughter close.

Adrian watched Thomas.

“You took her.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No. Dominic’s people did. I intercepted the car.”

Dominic laughed behind Reed.

Thomas saw him.

His expression changed.

“You finally brought him.”

Dominic smiled.

“Thomas.”

Adrian raised his gun.

“Everybody seems to know everybody except me.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You know enough now.”

“No. I know fragments.”

He pointed at Dominic.

“He killed my father.”

“Yes.”

“You worked for Lorenzo.”

“Yes.”

“You faked your death.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To protect Ellie.”

Adrian looked at the child.

“From what?”

Thomas walked to a secure cabinet.

He opened it.

Inside were folders.

Thousands.

He removed one.

VALE—417.

“Four-seventeen was Lorenzo’s designation for the evidence chain against Dominic.”

“So not your number.”

“It became mine.”

Thomas placed the folder on the table.

“Your father discovered Dominic wasn’t acting alone.”

Adrian opened the folder.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

Police officers.

Judges.

Business owners.

Federal agents.

Politicians.

A network.

Dominic had spent decades building protection.

Lorenzo tried to expose it.

Thomas helped.

“Why not go to law enforcement?”

Thomas glanced at Reed.

“Because half the people we contacted were already on Dominic’s payroll.”

Reed said nothing.

He could not argue.

Thomas continued.

“When Lorenzo died, I hid the archive. Years later Dominic found me. I staged my death before he could finish the job.”

Claire whispered, “And never told me.”

“I couldn’t.”

“You could.”

“He watched you.”

“So you abandoned us.”

Thomas’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Ellie remained wrapped in Claire’s arms.

Adrian looked at Dominic.

“You destroyed four lives to protect your network.”

Dominic smiled.

“More than four.”

Adrian nearly shot him.

Reed stepped closer.

“Don’t.”

Adrian looked at the detective.

“You want him alive?”

“I want him talking.”

Thomas said, “You won’t need him.”

He tapped the folder.

“Everything is here.”

Dominic’s smile disappeared.

Thomas looked at Adrian.

“Your father left instructions.”

“For me?”

“Yes.”

Thomas handed him an envelope.

Adrian recognized Lorenzo’s handwriting.

ADRIAN.

His hands were suddenly less steady than they had been during the gunfight.

He opened it.

Son,

If you are reading this, then I did not survive long enough to tell you the truth myself.

I built something ugly and called it protection.

I taught you that fear was respect because I did not know the difference.

By the time I understood what I had made, men like Dominic had already turned my name into a weapon.

I tried to undo it.

I may have been too late.

Do not spend your life avenging me.

Spend it becoming better than me.

Adrian stopped reading.

For years he had imagined what he would say to his father if given one more minute.

Now his father had spoken.

And somehow the words were not enough.

Yet they were more than he had ever expected.

Julian stood nearby.

Adrian looked at him.

“You knew some of this.”

“Some.”

“You hid it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

Adrian nodded.

“That doesn’t make it better.”

“I know.”

“But Dominic lied about you cutting the brakes.”

“Yes.”

“You still gave him the schedule.”

Julian looked down.

“Yes.”

Adrian folded the letter.

“After tonight, we decide what that costs.”

Julian nodded.

“I’ll accept it.”

Marco asked Thomas, “Why bring Ellie to the tower at all?”

Thomas frowned.

“I didn’t.”

Claire turned toward him.

“What?”

Thomas shook his head.

“I never told Ellie to follow Adrian.”

Claire went pale.

Adrian looked at her.

“You wrote the note.”

“No.”

Ellie stared at her mother.

“You gave it to me.”

Claire’s face changed.

“I gave you a note. But I wrote, ‘If anything happens, stay with Mrs. Alvarez downstairs.’”

Adrian felt danger before he understood it.

Someone had replaced the note.

Someone wanted Ellie inside the war room.

Someone wanted her to find the access records.

Someone wanted Adrian to discover Dominic.

Dominic began laughing.

Slowly.

Thomas turned toward him.

“What did you do?”

Dominic smiled.

“You still think this was about hiding?”

Reed stepped forward.

“What was it about?”

Dominic looked at Adrian.

“Succession.”

Adrian frowned.

Dominic continued.

“Lorenzo’s empire cannot survive without a Vale.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

“I’m standing here.”

“Yes.”

Dominic smiled wider.

“For now.”

A gunshot sounded.

Reed fell.

Claire screamed.

Marco spun.

Thomas pulled Ellie down.

Julian reached for his weapon.

Another shot.

Julian collapsed against the table.

Adrian turned toward the corridor.

A man stepped from the shadows.

Young.

Well dressed.

Familiar.

Adrian recognized him immediately.

Daniel Mercer.

His chief financial officer.

The quiet man who had worked beside him for nine years.

Daniel aimed the gun at Adrian.

May you like

Dominic laughed.

“My real successor finally arrived.”
