Chapter 2 - The Brother at the Door

Adrian raised his gun before the door had opened halfway.

“Don’t move.”

The figure stopped.

The emergency lighting flickered on.

Julian Cross stood in the doorway.

Thirty-four.

Perfect black suit.

Open hands.

Confusion on his face.

“Adrian?”

Marco moved immediately to the side, drawing his own weapon.

Julian stared at both guns.

“What the hell is going on?”

Adrian watched every detail.

Julian’s breathing.

His eyes.

His shoulders.

His hands.

No visible weapon.

No sweat.

No panic beyond what any man would show with two pistols aimed at his chest.

Then Julian noticed Ellie.

Something passed across his face.

Recognition.

Tiny.

Instant.

Gone.

Adrian saw it.

“So you know her,” he said.

Julian looked back at him.

“What?”

“The girl.”

“No.”

“You looked at her like you did.”

“I looked because there’s a child in your war room.”

Ellie stepped behind Adrian.

Adrian lowered his gun by less than an inch.

“Where were you fifteen minutes ago?”

“Upstairs conference room.”

“Alone?”

“With Daniel and Reese.”

Marco spoke quietly.

“Both left the building at seven.”

Julian’s eyes shifted toward Marco.

“Yes. After the meeting.”

“What time?”

“Seven ten. Maybe seven fifteen.”

Adrian said, “Your access card.”

Julian frowned.

“You serious?”

“Card.”

Julian slowly reached into his jacket.

Adrian’s finger tightened around the trigger.

Julian produced a black access card and held it out.

Marco took it.

“Scan it.”

Marco stepped toward the security terminal.

The system responded instantly.

JULIAN CROSS.

LAST ACCESS:

18:54.

LEVEL 42.

Nothing after that.

Adrian studied Julian.

“Where’s your silver key?”

Julian went still.

“The emergency key.”

“I know which key you mean.”

“Where is it?”

Julian checked the inside pocket of his coat.

Then another.

His face darkened.

“It’s gone.”

Marco gave a humorless laugh.

“Convenient.”

Julian glared at him.

“I didn’t know it was missing.”

Adrian pulled the scratched key from Marco’s hand and held it up.

“Recognize this?”

Julian stared.

Then his face changed.

“That’s mine.”

Ellie moved farther behind Adrian.

Julian saw it.

“Where did you find it?”

“Under my desk.”

Julian shook his head.

“No.”

“You sure?”

“I haven’t been in this room for three days.”

Ellie whispered, “He was.”

All three men looked at her.

Julian’s face tightened.

“Excuse me?”

Ellie pointed at him.

“I saw you.”

“When?”

“Last week.”

Julian looked at Adrian.

“She’s mistaken.”

“She followed you.”

“No child followed me into this floor.”

“She found our photograph.”

Adrian removed it from his pocket.

For the first time, Julian’s composure broke.

He stared at the picture.

“Where did you get that?”

“She says you dropped it.”

Julian looked at Ellie.

His expression was no longer confused.

It was wounded.

“I haven’t carried that photo in years.”

Adrian felt the first real fracture in the story.

“You wrote on the back.”

“Yes.”

“So it was yours.”

“Twenty years ago.”

“Where is it usually?”

“In a safe.”

“Where?”

“My apartment.”

Marco said, “Who knows the combination?”

Julian’s eyes shifted toward him.

“Adrian.”

Marco looked at Adrian.

Adrian said nothing.

Julian added, “And you.”

The room went silent.

Marco’s mouth hardened.

“Careful.”

“I’m being careful.”

“You accusing me?”

“I’m answering the question.”

Adrian raised one hand.

“Enough.”

The computer chimed again.

Seven minutes remaining.

Then the screen changed.

A live camera feed appeared.

Sublevel Three.

A man sat tied to a chair.

Claire Hart.

Ellie screamed, “Mom!”

She ran toward the monitor.

Adrian caught her gently before she reached it.

Claire’s face was bruised.

Her wrists were bound.

A black hooded figure stood behind her.

No face visible.

No voice.

Then text appeared across the screen.

BRING ELLIE.

COME ALONE.

Adrian felt the little girl shaking against him.

“Mom.”

Her voice broke.

The calm child vanished.

She became six again.

Adrian crouched.

“Look at me.”

Her eyes stayed fixed on the screen.

“Ellie.”

She looked at him.

“I’m going to get her.”

“They’ll hurt her.”

“No.”

“You don’t know that.”

“You’re right.”

He placed both hands gently on her shoulders.

“But whoever did this wants you. That means your mother is useful to them alive.”

Julian stared at the screen.

“Why would they want the girl?”

Adrian looked at him.

“That’s what you’re going to tell me.”

“I have no idea.”

Marco stepped closer.

“Maybe because she saw him.”

Ellie shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian turned.

“No what?”

“They wanted me before tonight.”

Every adult in the room froze.

“What do you mean?” Adrian asked.

Ellie reached into the pocket of her jacket.

This time she removed a folded piece of paper.

She handed it to him.

The handwriting was printed in block letters.

ELLIE—

IF YOU EVER SEE THE MAN IN THE BLUE SUIT, FOLLOW HIM.

HE WILL LEAD YOU TO THE ROOM YOUR MOTHER WARNED YOU ABOUT.

Adrian looked down at his own clothing.

Deep navy-blue suit.

Ellie looked at him.

“My mom gave it to me.”

Julian muttered, “Jesus.”

Adrian unfolded the paper fully.

A second message was written on the inside.

IF ADRIAN VALE FINDS YOU FIRST, TRUST HIM.

His pulse changed.

“Your mother wrote this?”

Ellie nodded.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Did she explain why?”

“No.”

Julian moved closer.

“Claire knew about this room?”

Adrian turned sharply.

“Why do you sound surprised?”

“Because she works two floors below and she’s been here six months.”

Marco said, “Maybe she wasn’t what she claimed.”

Adrian ignored him.

He looked at Ellie.

“What did your mother tell you about me?”

“That you were dangerous.”

Julian almost smiled.

Adrian didn’t.

“What else?”

“That you kept promises.”

That hit harder than expected.

Adrian looked again at Claire on the monitor.

Bruised.

Terrified.

Still alive.

He had known dozens of people who feared him.

Very few believed he kept promises.

“Marco,” he said.

“Yes?”

“Lock the elevator.”

“Already done.”

“Seal all exits.”

Marco hesitated.

“If the traitor controls the network—”

“Then shut it down manually.”

Julian said, “You’re wasting time.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You volunteering?”

“To go downstairs? Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you think I did this.”

“I haven’t decided what I think.”

“Then let me prove it.”

Adrian watched him for a long moment.

This was Julian.

The boy who had slept on Adrian’s floor when they had no money.

The teenager Adrian had carried three blocks after he was stabbed.

The man who stood beside him at his father’s funeral.

Trust was not supposed to disappear because of a key.

But evidence did not care about history.

“Marco goes with you.”

Julian frowned.

“The message says alone.”

“I’m not obeying instructions written by a coward behind a camera.”

Another chime.

Five minutes.

Claire suddenly lifted her head on screen.

Her mouth moved.

No audio.

Ellie leaned close.

“She’s saying something.”

Adrian watched.

Claire repeated it.

Slowly.

Two words.

DON’T COME.

Then the hooded figure struck the back of her chair.

Ellie flinched.

Adrian’s expression changed.

The last of his hesitation vanished.

“Marco. Take the stairs.”

“What about you?”

“I’m taking Ellie somewhere safe.”

“There is nowhere safe if they’re inside.”

“I know one place.”

Julian stepped forward.

“I’m coming with you.”

Adrian pointed the pistol directly at his chest.

“No.”

Julian stared at him.

“If you think I’m involved, keep me where you can see me.”

“That’s exactly why you’re staying here.”

Adrian turned to Ellie.

“Come.”

He led her toward a hidden panel behind the shelving.

Few people knew it existed.

He pressed his palm against the sensor.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

ACCESS DENIED.

Marco swore.

Adrian stepped back.

Someone had removed his biometric clearance from his own system.

Then the main door slammed shut.

Metal bolts locked inside the walls.

The screen changed again.

Four minutes.

Julian turned slowly toward Adrian.

“We’re trapped.”

“No,” Adrian said.

He looked toward the maintenance hatch above the shelving.

“We’re delayed.”

Marco dragged a chair beneath it.

As he climbed, Ellie tugged Adrian’s sleeve.

“There’s something else.”

He looked down.

“What?”

“My mom didn’t just tell me to trust you.”

Ellie reached beneath her shirt and pulled out a thin chain.

A tiny USB drive hung from it.

“She said if she disappeared, I had to give you this.”

Adrian stared at the drive.

“When?”

“Only when you knew somebody close to you was lying.”

Julian and Marco both went still.

Adrian looked at one man.

Then the other.

Neither spoke.

Ellie placed the drive in his palm.

Adrian inserted it into the secure computer.

One file appeared.

A video.

The timestamp was three days old.

Claire Hart appeared on screen.

Her face was pale.

Her voice shook.

“Adrian, if you are watching this, then I failed to stop him.”

Adrian leaned closer.

Claire took a breath.

“The traitor is not trying to steal your empire.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“He is trying to give it to the man who killed your father.”

Then, behind Claire in the recording, someone entered the room.

She turned.

Her face changed.

May you like

And before the screen went black, Adrian heard her say one name.

“Marco.”
