Chapter 6 - The Brother Nobody Buried

The voice behind the door came again.

"Evan, don't believe your father."

Charles froze.

Elizabeth stepped backward.

Evan turned toward the opening.

"Daniel?"

A man walked into the red emergency light.

He looked almost seventy.

Tall.

Lean.

Gray hair swept away from a weathered face.

A scar crossed his chin.

He carried no visible weapon.

Charles looked as if someone had punched him.

"You should be dead."

Daniel smiled.

"That's becoming a family tradition."

Evan stepped between Daniel and Elizabeth.

"Where are my children?"

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"I don't have them."

"I just watched you put a gun against Vanessa's head."

"No."

Evan took out his phone.

"I saw your face."

"You saw my face."

Daniel moved closer.

"You didn't see me."

Evan stared.

Daniel tapped his own cheek.

"Thomas learned a long time ago that people trust their eyes more than their instincts."

"A mask?"

"Not exactly."

"What, then?"

"Something better."

Charles interrupted.

"Don't listen to him."

Daniel looked past Evan.

"There he is."

His voice carried decades of hatred.

"The great Charles Whitaker."

Charles said nothing.

Evan looked between them.

"Who is Daniel?"

Neither answered.

"Someone answers me now."

Elizabeth finally spoke.

"He's your uncle."

Evan turned.

"My what?"

"Charles's younger brother."

Evan looked at Daniel.

The resemblance had been hidden by age, scars, and years.

But now he saw it.

The eyes.

The jaw.

Even the way Daniel stood when challenged.

"You told me Dad was an only child."

Elizabeth lowered her eyes.

"Because that's what Charles demanded."

Evan looked at his father.

"Why?"

Charles's expression hardened.

"Daniel betrayed the family."

Daniel laughed.

"Family."

"Shut up."

"Still giving orders?"

"I said shut up."

Daniel stepped closer.

"And I stopped obeying you thirty years ago."

Evan moved between them.

"Nobody cares about your argument."

Daniel looked at him.

"You should."

"Why?"

"Because everything happening to your children started the night your father tried to kill me."

Silence.

Evan slowly looked at Charles.

"Is that true?"

"No."

Daniel nodded.

"Ask him where I got this."

He pointed to the scar beneath his chin.

Charles looked away.

Evan noticed.

"Father."

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

Daniel's expression turned cold.

"There it is."

"What happened?"

Charles exhaled.

"Daniel discovered the network before he was supposed to."

Daniel shook his head.

"I discovered what Charles was doing with it."

"Which was?"

"Turning protection into ownership."

Evan remembered Elizabeth saying the same thing.

Twenty-three families.

Secrets.

Control.

Files.

Children.

Daniel continued.

"The network wasn't evil when it began. Families protected families. If a judge was threatened, someone intervened. If a business was being extorted, someone made it stop. If a child was targeted because of a parent's position, everyone responded."

"Then Charles changed it?"

Daniel looked at his brother.

"Charles and Thomas."

Charles snapped, "That's a lie."

"Is it?"

"Thomas manipulated records."

"After you taught him how."

Elizabeth stepped between them.

"Stop."

Both men looked at her.

"We don't have time."

She turned to Evan.

"Daniel tried to expose the network."

"And?"

"Charles stopped him."

Daniel corrected her.

"Charles tried to bury me."

Evan looked at his father.

"You really enjoy funerals without bodies."

Charles didn't answer.

Daniel almost smiled.

Then Evan's expression hardened.

"My children."

Daniel nodded.

"Thomas has Noah."

"And Sophie?"

"At your estate."

"With Vanessa?"

"Yes."

"Is Vanessa working for Thomas?"

"No."

Evan frowned.

"She was holding Sophie."

"Because Thomas told her he'd kill Claire if she didn't."

"Claire's alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Daniel reached inside his jacket.

Marcus raised his weapon from the corridor.

"Slow."

Daniel stopped.

"Phone."

Evan nodded.

Daniel removed it.

He opened a live video.

Claire sat inside a small room.

Alive.

Her hands were bound, but she appeared uninjured.

Beside her sat Maria.

Evan stared.

"Where?"

"An old service building two miles from your estate."

"Who has them?"

"One of Thomas's teams."

"How many?"

"Four."

Evan looked at Marcus.

Marcus nodded.

"I can send people."

"No."

Evan took Daniel's phone.

"Nobody moves until I know where Noah is."

Daniel looked at him.

"Then you'll lose Sophie."

Evan stepped closer.

"Don't tell me to choose between my children."

"I'm telling you Thomas expects you to."

"He won't get what he expects."

Daniel studied him.

For the first time, something resembling approval crossed his face.

"Good."

Charles laughed bitterly.

"You think Daniel came here to help?"

Daniel turned.

"I came because you failed."

"At what?"

"Protecting Evan."

Charles's face changed.

Daniel looked back at his nephew.

"Your father knew Thomas was alive."

Evan already suspected that.

"How long?"

"Six years."

Evan turned toward Charles.

"You knew?"

Charles hesitated.

"Yes."

"At the funeral?"

"No."

"When?"

"Three months later."

"And you said nothing."

"I was already underground."

"You could have contacted me."

"Thomas was watching you."

"So your solution was to leave me blind?"

"My solution kept you alive."

Evan's voice dropped.

"My wife is dead."

Charles stopped.

"My children were terrorized inside my own home."

No answer.

"My fiancée was manipulated into hurting them."

Still nothing.

"My seven-year-old daughter learned to hide evidence in a stuffed rabbit because every adult around her failed."

Charles lowered his eyes.

"Don't tell me your solution worked."

Nobody spoke.

Daniel broke the silence.

"Rachel understood that."

Evan turned sharply.

"You knew my wife?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"She found me."

"When?"

"Eight months before she died."

Another secret.

Evan felt exhausted by them.

"Why?"

"Because Rachel discovered Noah's hospital records had been altered."

"She knew Thomas did it."

"Eventually."

"Why didn't she come to me?"

"She tried."

Evan remembered the video.

The fear in Rachel's face.

"What stopped her?"

Daniel looked at Charles.

"Your father."

Evan turned.

Charles immediately shook his head.

"No."

"Rachel contacted Charles first," Daniel said.

"That's not true."

"Tell him."

Charles stared at Daniel.

"Tell your son what Rachel asked you to do."

Evan's voice was quiet.

"What did she ask?"

Charles finally answered.

"Take the children away."

"From who?"

"From you."

The words landed hard.

Evan didn't move.

"Why?"

"She thought Thomas was using your reputation to keep the network afraid."

"My reputation?"

"People feared you."

"They still do."

"Exactly."

Evan understood.

He had spent years making himself untouchable.

He'd built businesses legally where possible, brutally where necessary, and cultivated a reputation that kept enemies from his door.

Thomas had turned that reputation into leverage.

"Rachel thought the children were safer without me."

"Temporarily."

"And what did you do?"

"I refused."

Daniel said, "You did more than refuse."

Charles glared at him.

Evan noticed.

"What did he do?"

Daniel answered.

"He told Thomas."

Elizabeth whispered, "Charles."

Evan stared at his father.

"You told him Rachel knew?"

Charles stepped forward.

"I didn't know what Thomas had become."

"You knew he was alive."

"Yes."

"You knew he was running the network."

"Parts of it."

"And you told him my wife was investigating him?"

"I thought he would scare her away from it."

Evan's face emptied.

Daniel looked down.

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

Marcus said nothing.

Evan walked toward Charles.

One step.

Then another.

Charles didn't retreat.

"Was Thomas responsible for Rachel's accident?"

"I don't know."

"Look at me."

Charles did.

"Was he?"

"I believe so."

Evan punched him.

Charles hit the floor.

Elizabeth gasped.

Daniel didn't move.

Evan stood over his father.

"You don't get to call yourself my protector again."

Charles wiped blood from his mouth.

"I deserve that."

"That wasn't forgiveness."

"I know."

Evan turned away.

He couldn't afford rage.

Not now.

Sophie.

Noah.

Everything else could wait.

"Daniel, how do we get both children?"

Daniel approached a metal cabinet.

He opened it.

Inside was an old map of the Whitaker estate.

He spread it across the examination table.

"Thomas thinks you'll bring Elizabeth back through the main entrance."

"I won't."

"He thinks Charles will try to stop you."

"He probably will."

Charles remained silent.

Daniel pointed to a narrow line beneath the mansion.

"The estate has three tunnels."

Evan stared.

"I know about one."

"Thomas knows about two."

"And the third?"

"Elizabeth built it."

Evan looked at his mother.

She nodded.

"It runs from the old greenhouse to the east wing."

"Room 314?"

"Directly underneath it."

Daniel pointed.

"If Thomas has Sophie in 314, you enter from below."

"And Noah?"

Daniel indicated another point on the map.

"Thomas won't keep him in one place."

"The tracker showed this clinic."

"Because he wanted you here."

Evan frowned.

"Then where is Noah?"

Daniel looked at Mr. Buttons.

Marcus had brought the rabbit back after Noah disappeared.

"Give me that."

Marcus handed it over.

Daniel opened the seam.

He pulled out the tracker Sophie had hidden.

Then he cut deeper into the stuffing.

A second device dropped onto the table.

Evan stared.

"That's not ours."

"No."

Daniel examined it.

"Thomas's."

The tracker hadn't simply shown Noah's location.

It had also told Thomas where Evan was going.

"We've been carrying his tracker."

"Yes."

Evan looked around.

"Then he knows we're here."

Daniel nodded.

"That's why we need to leave now."

Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

"What?"

"My team reached the service building."

"Claire?"

"Alive."

"Maria?"

"Alive."

Evan exhaled.

"Any sign of Noah?"

Marcus listened again.

Then shook his head.

"No."

Daniel looked at the map.

"Thomas took him somewhere that matters."

Evan remembered Rachel's video.

He's trying to destroy the Whitakers from inside.

"What matters most to Thomas?"

Charles answered from behind them.

"Succession."

Evan turned.

Charles had gotten back to his feet.

Blood marked his lip.

"Explain."

"The network's leadership can be transferred only when representatives from the founding families authenticate a successor."

"With DNA?"

"Partly."

"And Thomas wants Noah authenticated."

"Yes."

"But you said the DNA story was false."

"The claim that Noah is Thomas's blood is false. Noah doesn't need to be Thomas's son."

"Then why him?"

Charles looked at Elizabeth.

She answered.

"Because Noah is the youngest male Whitaker."

Evan stared.

"This is about my last name?"

"It's about legitimacy."

Daniel shook his head.

"Not anymore."

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel's face had changed.

He was staring at the laptop.

"What?"

"Thomas doesn't need Noah."

"Then why take him?"

Daniel turned the screen.

An encrypted network page had opened automatically.

Twenty-three symbols appeared.

Twenty-two were gray.

One was green.

WHITAKER SUCCESSION VERIFIED.

Evan felt cold.

"How?"

Daniel typed rapidly.

"Someone completed the authentication."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Another line appeared.

SUCCESSOR: N. WHITAKER.

Evan stepped closer.

"Noah?"

Daniel shook his head.

"The system only shows initials."

"Who else could N. Whitaker be?"

Nobody answered.

Then Elizabeth whispered:

"Nathan."

Charles went pale.

Evan looked at her.

"Who's Nathan?"

Elizabeth stared at Daniel.

Daniel stared at Charles.

Another secret.

Evan slammed his palm against the table.

"WHO IS NATHAN?"

Charles finally spoke.

"My son."

Evan stopped.

"What?"

Daniel whispered, "Charles."

But it was too late.

Evan looked at his father.

"Your son?"

Charles nodded.

"Before I married your mother."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"How old?"

"Forty-two."

Evan almost laughed.

"I have a brother."

"Half brother."

"And nobody thought I should know?"

"We believed Nathan was dead."

"Of course you did."

Elizabeth stepped forward.

"Evan, Nathan disappeared when he was seventeen."

"Thomas?"

"We never proved it."

Daniel looked at the succession screen.

"If Nathan is alive, Thomas doesn't need Noah to control the Whitaker seat."

Evan understood.

"Then Noah isn't the successor."

"No."

"He's leverage."

"Yes."

A new message appeared on Evan's phone.

A photograph.

Noah was sitting beside a man in a dark suit.

The man's face was turned away.

Underneath:

BRING ELIZABETH TO ROOM 314.

COME ALONE.

OR YOUR SON LEARNS WHAT HIS FAMILY DOES TO TRAITORS.

Evan showed Daniel.

"We go home."

Charles shook his head.

"That's what they want."

Evan looked at him.

"My children are home."

"One of them."

Evan froze.

"What?"

Charles pointed toward the photograph.

"Look at the wall."

Evan enlarged it.

Behind Noah was dark wood paneling.

A brass lamp.

A framed painting.

He recognized the room.

Not Room 314.

Not the estate.

His private office in Manhattan.

Noah was seventy miles away.

"They split them," Marcus said.

Evan stared.

Thomas had created the choice.

Sophie in Connecticut.

Noah in Manhattan.

Elizabeth for Sophie.

Evan for Noah.

"Two teams," Evan said.

Daniel nodded.

"That's what Thomas expects."

"No."

Evan looked at the people around him.

"For the first time, we stop doing what he expects."

He pointed at Marcus.

"You take Elizabeth through the greenhouse tunnel. Get Sophie."

Marcus nodded.

"Daniel comes with me."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because Thomas knows my father."

Evan glanced at Charles.

"He knows my mother."

Then at Daniel.

"But he doesn't know I trust you."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"You don't."

"Exactly."

Charles stepped forward.

"What about me?"

Evan looked at him.

"You fix the mistake that killed my wife."

Charles's expression changed.

"How?"

"Find Thomas."

Evan's phone vibrated again.

Not a message.

A call.

Video.

He answered.

Noah appeared.

"Daddy!"

"I'm coming, buddy."

A hand pulled Noah backward.

Evan's expression hardened.

"Don't touch him."

A man entered the frame.

At first, only his suit was visible.

Then his face.

Evan stopped breathing.

The man looked like Charles thirty years younger.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same Whitaker stare.

Nathan.

His brother.

Nathan smiled.

"Hello, Evan."

Evan said nothing.

Nathan leaned toward the camera.

"You've spent all day looking for Thomas."

"Where is my son?"

"Safe."

"If you hurt him—"

"I'm not going to hurt Noah."

"Then release him."

Nathan smiled again.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because he's the only person who can open what Rachel left behind."

Evan's blood ran cold.

"What did my wife leave?"

Nathan looked off camera.

Someone had entered the room with him.

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, Nathan looked afraid.

"No."

The video shook.

A voice spoke from behind him.

"Give me the phone."

Evan recognized it.

Thomas Vale.

Nathan backed away.

"You're not supposed to be here."

Thomas stepped closer.

The camera dropped.

Noah screamed.

The feed went black.

Evan grabbed his coat.

Then another message appeared.

Not from Thomas.

From Rachel's old phone number.

A number disconnected three years ago.

Four words appeared:

EVAN. I AM ALIVE.

A second message followed immediately.

DON'T TRUST DANIEL.

Evan slowly raised his eyes.

May you like

Daniel was standing behind him.

And Daniel had just locked the door.
