Chapter 5 - The Mother Who Came Back

Evan couldn't move.
Noah stood in the doorway holding Mr. Buttons against his chest.
Behind him was Elizabeth Whitaker.
His mother.
Fifteen years dead.
Her hair had turned gray-blonde. Lines framed her eyes. Her face was thinner than the woman Evan remembered.
But it was her.
The same eyes.
The same slight tilt of her head.
The tiny scar above her right eyebrow from the horseback accident Evan had witnessed when he was eleven.
No photograph could have taught someone that scar.
No stranger could have reproduced the way Elizabeth looked at her son.
"Evan."
His name came from her mouth.
His knees almost failed him.
Noah smiled uncertainly.
"Daddy, I found Grandma."
Evan's shock vanished.
"Come to me."
Noah started forward.
Elizabeth touched his shoulder.
Evan's voice became deadly.
"Take your hand off my son."
Elizabeth immediately released him.
Noah ran.
Evan dropped to one knee and pulled the boy against him.
He checked his face.
His arms.
His wrists.
"Did anybody hurt you?"
"No."
"Did anybody give you medicine?"
Noah shook his head.
"Did anybody make you eat or drink anything?"
"No."
"Where's Maria?"
"She went with the scary man."
Thomas.
Evan stood with Noah in his arms.
Marcus remained behind him, weapon lowered but ready.
Charles had not moved.
He was staring at Elizabeth like he'd seen a ghost.
Maybe he had.
Elizabeth finally looked at him.
"Hello, Charles."
Charles's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Then:
"You died."
Elizabeth gave a sad smile.
"So did you."
No one laughed.
Evan stared at his mother.
"Who are you?"
Pain crossed her face.
"Evan—"
"Answer."
"I'm your mother."
"My mother died in St. Vincent's Hospital."
"No."
"I watched her die."
"You watched someone you believed was me die."
"I held her hand."
Elizabeth's composure cracked.
"I know."
"You know?"
"I was there."
Evan stared.
"Where?"
"Behind the observation glass."
The words struck him harder than a punch.
"You watched me?"
"I had no choice."
"Everyone has a choice."
"Not when your children are threatened."
Evan tightened his hold on Noah.
"Don't use my children to excuse what you did to yours."
Elizabeth lowered her eyes.
Charles finally spoke.
"You told me she was dead."
Elizabeth looked at him.
"Who?"
"Thomas."
"Thomas told everyone what they needed to believe."
"Why?"
"Because keeping me dead kept Evan alive."
Evan laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
"That's becoming a very popular explanation."
Elizabeth stepped forward.
Marcus raised his weapon.
She stopped.
"I don't expect you to forgive me."
"Good."
"I expect you to listen."
"My son was kidnapped."
"He wasn't kidnapped by me."
"He was brought to an abandoned medical facility where my dead mother was waiting."
"I was trying to get him away from Thomas."
"Where is Thomas?"
"I don't know."
"Maria?"
"I don't know."
"Claire Cole?"
Elizabeth hesitated.
Evan saw it.
"You know Claire."
"Yes."
"Is she alive?"
"She was two hours ago."
"Where?"
"Thomas moved her."
Vanessa would need to hear that.
Evan set Noah down but kept him behind his leg.
"Why does Thomas want my children?"
Elizabeth looked at Charles.
"Tell him."
Charles said nothing.
"Tell your son."
Charles's face hardened.
"You don't get to order me anymore."
Elizabeth smiled bitterly.
"Apparently death didn't improve either of us."
Evan stepped between them.
"I'm done watching two ghosts argue."
Both fell silent.
He pointed toward Elizabeth.
"You start."
She looked at Noah.
"Not in front of him."
"No more secrets because children are nearby. Secrets are why he's here."
Elizabeth absorbed that.
Then nodded.
"Thomas believes your family controls the network."
"My family?"
"The Whitakers."
"Doesn't it?"
"No."
She looked at Charles.
"The Whitakers were caretakers."
Charles's jaw tightened.
Evan frowned.
"Caretakers for who?"
Elizabeth answered.
"Twenty-three families."
The number again.
"The protocol?"
"Not just a protocol. Twenty-three founding families built a private alliance generations ago. Banks, courts, transportation, hospitals, political offices. At first, they protected one another."
"And later?"
"They controlled one another."
Evan understood the folders in Room 314.
"Through secrets."
"Yes."
"Blackmail."
"Sometimes."
Charles interrupted.
"Most of those files prevented wars."
Elizabeth turned on him.
"That's what you always told yourself."
"And you benefited from them."
"So did you."
Evan raised his voice.
"Enough."
Silence.
"What does this have to do with Sophie and Noah?"
Elizabeth looked directly at him.
"Thomas wants an heir he can control."
"He has dozens of powerful families to choose from."
"Not anymore."
"Why?"
"Because the original ledger identifies every family's vulnerabilities. Whoever possesses it can dismantle the entire network."
"Sophie found it."
"Yes."
"How?"
Elizabeth's expression softened.
"I left instructions."
"For a child who wasn't born?"
"For you."
Evan frowned.
"Your instructions didn't reach me."
"No. Thomas intercepted them."
"Then how did Sophie find the ledger?"
Elizabeth looked toward Noah's stuffed rabbit.
"Because children notice things adults ignore."
Noah squeezed Mr. Buttons.
Sophie had apparently found Elizabeth's hidden room by accident.
Then found the ledger.
Then realized enough to hide it.
Evan felt equal parts pride and horror.
"My seven-year-old daughter should be worrying about spelling tests."
"I agree."
"Yet you dragged her into this."
"I never contacted Sophie."
"She met a woman claiming to be you."
Elizabeth's face changed.
"What?"
"In the greenhouse."
"That wasn't me."
Charles looked at Evan sharply.
"I told you."
Elizabeth stepped closer.
"What did she look like?"
"Like you."
"Did Sophie touch her?"
"No."
Elizabeth exhaled.
"Thank God."
Evan's patience snapped.
"Why does everyone keep asking that?"
Elizabeth and Charles exchanged a look.
A shared secret.
Evan hated it instantly.
"Tell me."
Charles said, "There was another woman."
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
Evan stared.
"What woman?"
"Her name was Katherine."
"Who is Katherine?"
Elizabeth answered quietly.
"My sister."
Evan's mind stopped.
"You don't have a sister."
"I did."
"Nobody ever mentioned her."
"That was intentional."
"Why?"
"Because Katherine was supposed to inherit the network."
Evan looked from his mother to his father.
"What happened?"
Elizabeth's face tightened.
"She disappeared."
"When?"
"The year before you were born."
"Thomas?"
"We believed so."
"And now?"
Elizabeth looked toward the corridor.
"Now I think she's been working with him."
Evan remembered Sophie's description.
Older.
Similar to Grandma.
Different hair.
A woman who could plausibly look enough like Elizabeth to fool a seven-year-old.
"Katherine was at my house."
"Probably."
"She touched Noah."
Elizabeth went pale.
"What?"
"The video showed her hand on his shoulder."
She immediately turned to Noah.
"What did she do?"
Evan blocked her.
"Don't touch him."
"I'm not going to hurt him."
"Then explain why touching matters."
Elizabeth looked at Charles.
Charles finally answered.
"DNA."
Evan stared.
"What about it?"
"The network requires biological verification for succession."
Marcus spoke for the first time in several minutes.
"You're telling me this whole organization operates like some medieval dynasty?"
Charles looked at him.
"With considerably better lawyers."
Evan ignored the remark.
"They needed Noah's DNA."
"Possibly."
"Why Noah?"
Elizabeth said nothing.
Evan remembered her letter.
Ask Charles why Sophie has my blood type.
Then Charles's unfinished warning before Room 23.
There's something you need to know about Noah.
Evan looked at his father.
"Say it."
Charles shook his head.
"Not here."
Evan stepped toward him.
"Say it."
Elizabeth whispered, "Charles."
He looked at her.
She nodded.
Charles closed his eyes.
"When Noah was born, there was a complication."
Evan remembered every second.
The emergency C-section.
The doctors moving quickly.
His late wife, Rachel, crying.
Noah being taken from the room.
Forty-three minutes before Evan saw him.
"What complication?"
"His bloodwork."
"What about it?"
"It triggered a flag."
"What flag?"
"A private database."
Evan felt sick.
"You had my newborn son tested for this network?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
"Thomas."
Evan's hands curled into fists.
"Why?"
"Because Noah's markers matched someone they weren't supposed to match."
Evan stared.
"Who?"
Charles couldn't say it.
Elizabeth did.
"Thomas."
Silence.
Marcus looked away.
Evan didn't understand at first.
Then he did.
"No."
Elizabeth stepped forward.
"Evan—"
"No."
"It doesn't necessarily mean what you think."
"Then explain what it means."
"We never completed the testing."
"My son matched Thomas Vale?"
"Partially."
"How?"
"We don't know."
Evan's thoughts raced toward Rachel.
His wife had died three years earlier in a car accident.
He had loved her.
Trusted her.
There had never been any question that Noah was his.
Elizabeth seemed to read his face.
"Rachel never betrayed you."
Evan looked at her sharply.
"Don't say her name."
"She didn't."
"How could you possibly know?"
"Because Rachel knew about the network."
That was another blow.
"No."
"She discovered it after Sophie was born."
"Rachel would have told me."
"She tried."
Evan remembered the final months before Rachel's death.
The arguments.
Her anxiety.
Her insistence that they move away from Connecticut.
He had blamed stress.
She'd once told him, This house isn't safe for the children.
He'd promised better security.
He hadn't understood.
"Rachel knew Thomas was alive?"
Elizabeth nodded.
"For at least six months."
Evan's voice cracked despite himself.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"Because Thomas threatened Sophie."
The room became unbearably quiet.
Noah tugged Evan's hand.
"Daddy?"
Evan looked down.
His son didn't understand any of it.
Good.
Evan knelt.
"Hey, buddy."
"Can we go home?"
Evan swallowed.
"Yes."
"When?"
"Now."
He looked at Marcus.
"Take him outside."
Noah resisted.
"I want you."
"I'll be right behind you."
"You promise?"
Evan kissed his forehead.
"I promise."
Marcus took Noah.
At the doorway, Mr. Buttons slipped from the boy's arm and hit the floor.
Something clicked inside it.
Evan looked down.
A seam along the stuffed rabbit's back had opened.
Not the tracker.
Something else was inside.
Evan reached into the stuffing.
His fingers found plastic.
He pulled out a tiny memory card.
Elizabeth stared.
"Where did that come from?"
Evan looked at Noah.
The boy shrugged.
"Sophie put stuff in Mr. Buttons."
Evan handed Noah back to Marcus.
"Go."
Once they were gone, Evan examined the card.
"Computer."
Elizabeth pointed toward an old workstation.
Evan inserted it.
One video file.
No date.
No title.
He opened it.
Rachel appeared.
Evan stopped breathing.
His dead wife sat inside Room 314.
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
But alive.
The recording was at least three years old.
Rachel looked directly into the camera.
"Evan, if you're watching this, Sophie found the rabbit."
Evan covered his mouth.
Rachel continued.
"I don't know how much Thomas has told you. Don't believe his DNA story."
Charles moved closer.
Elizabeth stared at the screen.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
"Noah is your son. I had him tested privately. I hid the real results."
Evan shut his eyes for half a second.
Then opened them.
"Thomas altered the hospital records because he needed you to believe Noah belonged to his bloodline."
Charles whispered, "Why?"
Rachel answered as if she'd anticipated the question.
"Because Thomas isn't trying to inherit the network."
She leaned closer to the camera.
"He's trying to destroy the Whitakers from inside it."
The video glitched.
Rachel looked over her shoulder.
Someone was approaching.
She spoke quickly.
"Evan, your mother is alive. Your father is alive. But there's one person you must never trust."
The image froze.
Evan stared.
"No."
The video resumed for two seconds.
Rachel said one name.
The audio vanished.
Then the file corrupted.
Evan slammed his hand against the desk.
"Can you recover it?"
Elizabeth moved toward the computer.
"Maybe."
Before she reached it, every light in the facility shut off.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Charles looked toward the corridor.
"Thomas."
A gunshot echoed upstairs.
Then another.
Evan ran.
Marcus's voice exploded through his phone.
"EVAN!"
"What happened?"
"Someone took Noah."
Evan stopped dead.
"Who?"
"I don't know. The lights went out. One of my men is down."
"Where are you?"
"North exit."
Evan ran toward the stairs.
Then Marcus said something that made him stop.
"There's another problem."
"What?"
"Sophie isn't at the estate anymore."
Evan's blood went cold.
"Where is she?"
"I just received a live feed."
"From who?"
"I don't know."
The phone vibrated.
A video appeared.
Sophie sat in Room 314.
Back at Evan's mansion.
Someone stood behind her.
A blonde woman.
Vanessa.
Evan stared at the screen.
Vanessa leaned toward the camera.
Her face was wet with tears.
"Evan, I'm sorry."
Someone pressed a gun into the back of her head.
A man's hand entered frame.
A silver ring gleamed on his finger.
Then a voice spoke.
"Bring Elizabeth home."
Evan looked at his mother.
The video shifted.
For one second, the camera showed the man holding the gun.
Elizabeth screamed.
Charles went white.
Evan recognized the face from photographs hidden in his father's study.
It wasn't Thomas Vale.
The man smiled into the camera.
Charles whispered his name.
"Daniel."
The feed went black.
May you like
Then the locked door behind them clicked open.
And someone on the other side said, "Evan, don't believe your father."
