Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Greenhouse

Evan ran.
Marcus followed.
Charles shouted something behind them, but Evan didn't slow down.
The old greenhouse stood beyond the eastern gardens, separated from the mansion by a stone path and a line of tall hedges. Evan hadn't entered it since his mother died.
Elizabeth had loved that greenhouse.
Orchids.
Roses.
White lilies.
As a boy, Evan had sometimes found her there after midnight, sitting alone beneath the glass ceiling with paperwork spread across the table.
He'd assumed they were charity documents.
Now he wondered what she'd really been reading.
The greenhouse door moved again.
Someone was inside.
"Sophie!"
No answer.
Evan reached the entrance.
Marcus caught his shoulder.
"Wait."
"My daughter is in there."
"And Thomas wants you angry."
"I am angry."
"That's why I'm telling you to wait."
Evan looked through the glass.
Nothing.
Only plants and shadows.
Marcus drew his weapon.
Charles reached them seconds later, breathing hard.
"Don't shoot unless you know what you're looking at."
Marcus glanced at him.
"I've managed so far."
Charles ignored the insult.
Evan grabbed the door.
His father's warning returned.
If the woman with Sophie says her name is Elizabeth, don't let Sophie touch her.
He pulled it open.
"Sophie?"
A small voice answered.
"Daddy?"
Evan entered immediately.
"Sophie!"
He found her near the center aisle.
She was standing beside a wooden potting table.
Alive.
Unhurt.
Alone.
Evan crossed the distance in seconds and dropped to his knees.
Sophie threw herself into his arms.
He held her so tightly she squeaked.
"Daddy."
"I'm here."
"I knew you'd come."
"Where's Noah?"
"With Maria."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Evan pulled back.
"Where's the woman?"
Sophie pointed toward the rear of the greenhouse.
"She went through there."
A service door stood partly open.
Marcus moved toward it.
Charles said sharply, "Don't."
Marcus stopped.
"Why?"
"Because that's what she wants."
Evan turned.
"You know who's here."
Charles didn't answer.
Sophie looked past Evan.
Her eyes widened.
"Grandpa?"
Everything stopped.
Charles stared at her.
He hadn't seen his granddaughter openly in nine years.
Sophie had been a baby when he disappeared.
She shouldn't remember him.
Yet she had recognized him instantly.
Charles whispered, "Hello, Sophie."
Evan stood between them.
"How does she know you?"
Charles looked at him.
"I don't know."
Sophie tugged Evan's shirt.
"He's in the pictures."
"What pictures?"
"The lady showed me."
Evan crouched again.
"What lady?"
Sophie hesitated.
"She said her name was Elizabeth."
Charles closed his eyes.
Evan saw the reaction.
Fear.
"Was she Grandma?" Sophie asked.
Evan couldn't answer.
His mother would be sixty-two now.
If she had survived.
"What did she look like?"
Sophie thought.
"Older."
"Like the photographs at home?"
"Kind of."
"Kind of?"
"Her hair was different."
"Did she touch you?"
Charles stepped forward.
"Sophie, did she touch you?"
Evan blocked him.
"I'll ask the questions."
"This matters."
"Everything matters."
Sophie shook her head.
"No. She wanted to."
Charles exhaled.
"But I remembered Grandpa said not to."
Evan froze.
"What?"
Sophie pointed at Charles.
"He told me not to let her."
Charles looked genuinely confused.
"I've never spoken to her."
Sophie frowned.
"Yes, you have."
"When?"
"On the phone."
Evan turned toward his father.
Charles shook his head.
"Not me."
Sophie looked uncertain.
"You sounded like him."
Evan understood.
Recorded voice.
Or someone imitating Charles.
Thomas had been manipulating everyone.
Maybe longer than any of them realized.
Evan gently touched Sophie's cheek.
"What did Elizabeth want?"
"She asked about the book."
"The ledger?"
Sophie nodded.
"Where did you find it?"
"In Grandma's room."
"Which room?"
"The little room behind her closet."
Another hidden room.
Evan almost laughed.
His childhood home had apparently contained more secrets than bedrooms.
"What happened to the book?"
"I hid it."
Charles stepped forward.
"Where?"
Evan's head snapped toward him.
"Back."
Charles stopped.
"Sophie, you don't tell anyone where it is."
"But Daddy—"
"Except me."
She nodded.
Evan looked at Charles.
"You wanted the ledger too."
"I wanted it destroyed."
"Why?"
"Because people will kill for the names inside."
"They already have."
Charles looked away.
Evan saw it.
"Who died?"
No answer.
"My mother?"
Charles's face tightened.
"Tell me what happened to her."
"This isn't the place."
"You've had fifteen years to find the place."
Sophie whispered, "Daddy."
Evan looked down.
She was staring toward the far end of the greenhouse.
"Someone's there."
Marcus raised his gun.
Leaves moved.
A figure stepped from behind the hanging plants.
Vanessa.
Her dress was torn near the hem.
Blood marked one knee.
Evan stood.
"What are you doing here?"
Vanessa looked terrified.
"Thomas took me."
"Where?"
"The cellar."
"Why?"
"He thought I knew where Sophie hid the ledger."
"Do you?"
"No."
"Where's Noah?"
"I don't know."
Evan stepped closer.
"Wrong answer."
"I'm telling the truth!"
Vanessa looked at Sophie.
"I'm sorry."
Sophie moved behind Evan.
Vanessa stopped.
Her face crumpled.
"I never meant for this to happen."
Evan's voice was cold.
"You raised your hand to my daughter."
"I know."
"You threatened her."
"I know."
"You helped a dead man get into my home."
"I know."
"Why should I believe anything you say?"
"Because Thomas killed my sister."
Charles looked up sharply.
"What?"
Vanessa reached into her dress pocket.
She removed a phone.
The screen was cracked.
"He sent me this twenty minutes ago."
She handed it to Evan.
A photograph appeared.
Claire Cole.
Vanessa's younger sister.
She was lying on a concrete floor.
Eyes closed.
Beside her was a newspaper dated that morning.
Evan looked at Vanessa.
"You said Charles told you she was alive."
"He lied."
Charles stepped forward.
"I didn't."
Vanessa slapped him.
The sound echoed through the greenhouse.
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
Charles didn't retaliate.
Vanessa screamed, "You told Evan she was alive!"
"Because she was."
"When?"
"This morning."
Vanessa stared.
Evan looked at the photograph again.
Something bothered him.
He enlarged it.
Claire's hand.
Two fingers were extended against the floor.
Then three.
Then Evan noticed scratches in the concrete.
Not random.
Numbers.
"Marcus."
He showed him.
Marcus frowned.
"Could be an address."
"Or a locker."
Charles looked at it.
His face changed.
"You recognize it."
Charles said nothing.
Evan grabbed his coat.
"What is twenty-three?"
Charles looked toward Sophie.
"Not in front of her."
Evan's patience broke.
"My children have already been dragged into your secrets. Stop pretending you're protecting them."
Charles lowered his voice.
"Twenty-three was Elizabeth's emergency protocol."
Evan released him.
"What protocol?"
"If the network was compromised, she had twenty-three places where evidence could be stored."
"Which one is Claire indicating?"
"I don't know."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Apparently that's the Whitaker family motto."
Evan ignored her.
"Where is Noah?"
Sophie suddenly answered.
"Mr. Buttons knows."
Everyone looked at her.
"What?"
"Mr. Buttons."
Her brother's stuffed rabbit.
"He knows where Noah is."
Evan crouched.
"How?"
Sophie whispered, "I put something inside him."
"What?"
"A tracker."
Marcus blinked.
"You put a tracker in the rabbit?"
Sophie nodded.
"Daddy gave me one."
Evan remembered.
Six months earlier, Sophie had become fascinated with the small tracking tags Evan used for luggage.
She'd asked for one.
He'd given her an old unit.
"Do you know the account?"
Sophie recited the login.
Marcus immediately entered it into his phone.
A map appeared.
One signal.
Moving.
Not on the estate.
Marcus zoomed out.
"He's on Route 7."
Evan's heart dropped.
"Direction?"
"North."
"How long ago?"
"Tracker updated thirty seconds ago."
Evan looked at Charles.
"Where would Thomas take him?"
Charles stared at the map.
Then pointed.
"Kent."
"What's in Kent?"
"My old property."
"The cabin?"
"No."
Evan had never heard of another property.
Charles said, "A medical facility."
Vanessa looked at him.
"Medical?"
Evan felt sick.
"Why would he take Noah there?"
Charles hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
"You know."
"Maybe."
"Say it."
Charles looked at Sophie.
Then Evan.
"Because this was never about the ledger."
Evan stared at him.
"What?"
"The ledger matters, but Thomas could have stolen it years ago."
"Then what does he want?"
Charles's eyes moved toward Sophie.
"The children."
Evan's face changed.
"Why?"
Charles looked older suddenly.
"Because of Elizabeth."
Evan grabbed him.
"Stop speaking in riddles."
Charles didn't resist.
"Your mother discovered something shortly before she died."
"What?"
"That the network wasn't only collecting secrets."
"Then what was it doing?"
Charles swallowed.
"Selecting families."
Marcus frowned.
"For what?"
Charles looked at Evan.
"Bloodlines."
Silence.
Vanessa whispered, "What the hell does that mean?"
Evan released his father.
"Explain."
"Certain families inside the network had access to money, influence, judges, hospitals, government agencies. Thomas believed those connections could be inherited and controlled through generations."
"That's insane."
"Yes."
"Where do my children fit?"
Charles looked toward Sophie.
"Elizabeth discovered Thomas had created files on future heirs."
Evan's stomach turned.
"Sophie and Noah."
"Eventually."
"They weren't born when Mom died."
"No."
"Then how?"
"Your file."
Evan remembered the cabinet upstairs.
EVAN WHITAKER.
Charles continued.
"Thomas didn't need their names yet. He needed yours."
Evan looked at Marcus.
"Get the car."
Marcus moved.
Charles grabbed his arm.
"You can't simply drive into Kent."
"Watch me."
"It's fortified."
"So am I."
"Thomas wants you there."
"Good."
Charles lowered his voice.
"He doesn't want you dead."
Evan stopped.
"Then what?"
"He wants you to choose."
"Choose what?"
"Which child gets protected."
Evan stared at him.
Sophie heard.
"Daddy?"
Evan immediately turned.
"No."
He knelt.
"Nobody chooses between you and Noah."
"But—"
"Nobody."
He held her face gently.
"Do you understand?"
Sophie nodded.
"You stay with Marcus."
"No."
"Soph."
"I can help."
"You already did."
She looked toward Vanessa.
Evan followed her gaze.
Vanessa was crying silently.
For the first time, Sophie walked toward her.
Vanessa didn't move.
"I'm sorry," Vanessa whispered.
Sophie stopped several feet away.
"Why were you mean to us?"
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"I was scared."
"You made Noah scared."
"I know."
"You made me scared."
"I know."
"Being scared doesn't mean you get to make kids scared."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Evan watched his daughter say something every adult in that greenhouse needed to hear.
Vanessa nodded.
"You're right."
Sophie returned to Evan.
He put one hand on her shoulder.
Marcus came back.
"Vehicles ready."
"Tracker?"
"Still moving."
"Police?"
Marcus shook his head.
"I ran the property. Charles was right. Former private clinic. Closed twelve years ago."
"Ownership?"
Marcus looked at Charles.
"Shell company tied to Vale Holdings."
Thomas.
Evan started toward the exit.
Sophie caught his hand.
"Daddy."
He turned.
She handed him the brass key.
"You need this."
"For what?"
"I don't know."
"The lady said you'd need it."
Elizabeth.
Evan took the key.
"Did she say anything else?"
Sophie nodded.
"What?"
"She said Grandpa would try to stop you."
Evan looked at Charles.
His father went still.
"Why?"
Sophie struggled to remember.
"Because Noah isn't supposed to go to Kent."
Charles's face drained.
Evan saw it.
"Why not?"
Charles said nothing.
"WHY NOT?"
Charles whispered, "Because Noah has been there before."
Evan stared.
"He's five."
"I know."
"I've never taken him there."
"I know."
"Then who did?"
Charles looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head violently.
"Not me."
Evan's pulse hammered.
"When?"
Charles didn't answer.
Marcus checked the tracker.
"Boss."
"What?"
"It stopped."
"Where?"
Marcus turned the screen.
The location marker sat directly over the abandoned clinic.
Evan headed outside.
Charles followed.
They reached the driveway.
Three black SUVs waited.
Evan opened the first door.
His phone vibrated.
A new video.
Unknown sender.
He opened it.
Noah sat in a small examination room.
Mr. Buttons rested beside him.
He wasn't crying.
A woman stood with her back to the camera.
Gray-blonde hair.
Slim frame.
She turned slightly.
Not enough to show her face.
Then she placed a hand on Noah's shoulder.
Evan remembered Charles's warning.
Don't let Sophie touch her.
The woman leaned toward Noah.
"Your father is coming."
Noah looked at her.
"Are you my grandma?"
The woman smiled.
The video ended.
Evan looked at Charles.
"Who is she?"
Charles couldn't answer.
Or wouldn't.
Evan climbed into the SUV.
They reached the clinic twenty-six minutes later.
The building looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Overgrown entrance.
No cars.
No guards.
Too easy.
Marcus and two security men entered first.
Evan followed.
Charles stayed behind him.
The lobby was empty.
The tracker showed Noah directly below them.
"Basement," Marcus said.
They found the stairs.
Down one level.
Then another.
A corridor stretched ahead.
At the end was a door marked 23.
Evan stopped.
Claire's message.
Twenty-three.
He reached for the handle.
Charles whispered, "Evan."
"What?"
"Before you open that door, there's something you need to know about Noah."
Evan turned.
A child's voice suddenly came from behind the door.
"Daddy!"
Evan grabbed the handle.
Charles shouted, "WAIT!"
The door unlocked from the inside.
It slowly opened.
Noah stood there holding Mr. Buttons.
May you like
And behind him, a woman stepped into the light.
Evan recognized his mother's face.
