Chapter 5 - The Truth Behind The Missing Man

The voice behind me whispered my name.
"Emily."
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it seven years ago.
Before the accusations.
Before the disappearance.
Before everyone decided he was a criminal.
I slowly turned around.
The man standing in the doorway looked older.
His hair was darker than I remembered.
His face had changed.
But his eyes were the same.
Michael Bennett.
Alive.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Detective Harris immediately stepped forward.
"Stay where you are."
Michael raised his hands.
"I don't want trouble."
I stared at him.
"You were alive."
His expression changed.
A mixture of regret and exhaustion.
"Yes."
The answer was simple.
Almost too simple.
I felt anger rising inside me.
"You let everyone think you were dead."
Michael looked down.
"I let everyone think I disappeared."
"That's not an answer."
"No."
He looked at me.
"But it's the truth."
Rebecca stepped beside me.
"Emily, be careful."
Michael nodded.
"She should be."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
His eyes moved toward the documents on the table.
"Because Daniel knows everything."
My heart tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"It means he knows about the camera."
Silence.
I felt cold.
"He knew?"
Michael nodded.
"He knew before you fell."
I stared at him.
"Then why didn't he destroy it?"
"Because he didn't know where the footage was stored."
I thought about it.
The cloud account.
My attorney.
The police.
The places I had saved it.
Michael continued.
"Daniel is careful. He never does anything without a backup plan."
I stepped closer.
"You worked with him."
Michael looked away.
"Yes."
The answer hurt more than I expected.
"Why?"
He took a deep breath.
"Because I was trying to expose him."
I didn't believe him.
Not immediately.
"Seven years ago, you were accused of stealing from your own company."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
"Everyone said you did it."
"I know."
"Daniel was one of the people who testified against you."
Michael looked at me.
"Because Daniel was the person who framed me."
The room became silent.
My mind struggled to process everything.
"What?"
Michael walked toward the table.
He picked up one of the documents.
"Seven years ago, Daniel wasn't interested in your company."
"He wanted control."
I shook my head.
"I wasn't even with him then."
"No."
Michael looked at me.
"But you were important."
That sentence confused me.
"Why?"
"Because you were the only person who could find the truth."
I remembered my old job.
Corporate compliance.
Investigations.
Financial records.
I knew how to follow money.
Michael continued.
"Your company was preparing an internal audit."
"An audit of what?"
He looked at the documents.
"Money that Daniel and Margaret were moving through different accounts."
My breathing slowed.
"So they destroyed you."
Michael nodded.
"They needed someone to blame."
"And they chose you."
"Yes."
I looked at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His expression changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
"Because they were watching you."
I frowned.
"What?"
"After I disappeared, I tried contacting people I trusted."
He looked at me.
"Every person I contacted ended up being questioned."
My stomach tightened.
"Daniel was monitoring everyone?"
"Yes."
Rebecca crossed her arms.
"Then why come back now?"
Michael looked at me.
"Because Daniel made one mistake."
"What mistake?"
"He underestimated you."
I didn't answer.
Michael pointed toward the camera evidence.
"He believed losing your children would break you."
My eyes filled with anger.
"He was wrong."
"Very wrong."
For the first time in days, I felt something stronger than pain.
Determination.
But then Michael said something that changed everything.
"There is something you don't know about the night you fell."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"Daniel wasn't alone."
The room went silent.
My heart started racing.
"What are you saying?"
Michael looked at the photo on the table.
"The person you saw him meeting wasn't just helping him."
"Who was it?"
Michael hesitated.
Then he answered.
"Someone from your own family."
I felt like the air disappeared.
"My family?"
He nodded.
"Someone who knew about the camera."
My mind searched through every person.
Friends.
Relatives.
People who had been in my house.
Then one name came to me.
I shook my head.
"No."
Michael watched my reaction.
"You know who."
I didn't want to say it.
Because saying it would make it real.
"Margaret?"
Michael didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
The silence was enough.
But that didn't make sense.
Margaret hated me.
She had always wanted Daniel to put her first.
But helping him hurt me?
Helping him destroy my children?
It was too much.
Michael walked toward the window.
"Emily, you need to understand something."
"What?"
"Daniel didn't push you because of an argument."
I stared at him.
"Then why?"
"Because he knew the truth was about to come out."
My hands became cold.
"What truth?"
Michael looked at me.
"The money he stole."
I froze.
"From who?"
"From everyone."
He opened another folder.
Inside were copies of financial records.
"The loan under your name wasn't just for Margaret's debts."
He placed a document in front of me.
"It was used to cover missing money."
I looked at the numbers.
Millions.
Not thousands.
Millions.
Daniel had been hiding something much bigger.
Rebecca looked through the papers.
"This is enough to open a major investigation."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
She looked at him.
"Why not?"
"Because Daniel planned for this."
"What do you mean?"
Michael pointed at the documents.
"These records are real."
"Then what's wrong?"
"He created them."
I stared at him.
"He made fake evidence?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because if someone found the money trail, he needed someone else to blame."
My blood went cold.
"Me."
Michael nodded.
"The debt under your name."
The fake signatures.
The missing money.
Everything.
Daniel had been building a story where I was responsible.
A story where I was the problem.
Not him.
Rebecca closed the folder.
"We need to move."
Michael looked at her.
"Too late."
I turned.
"What?"
His face was serious.
"Daniel knows Michael is here."
Detective Harris reached for his phone.
A notification appeared.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
He handed the phone to me.
One photo.
Taken moments ago.
Outside the house.
The four of us standing together.
Someone had been watching us.
Below the image was a message.
"Emily, you should have stayed quiet."
My hands shook.
Then another message appeared.
This time from Daniel.
Only five words.
"I know where you are."
May you like
The lights inside the house suddenly went out.
And from the darkness downstairs, a door slowly opened...
