Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The message remained on my phone screen.

"Emily, he's still alive."

I read it again.

And again.

But the words refused to make sense.

Because the person in the photo was not supposed to exist.

Not anymore.

I looked at Detective Harris.

"Who sent this?"

He shook his head.

"We are trying to trace the number."

My hands tightened around my phone.

"Who is he?"

The detective studied my face.

"You recognize him."

I swallowed.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

His name was Michael Bennett.

Seven years earlier, Michael was the reason I learned how dangerous secrets could be.

He was my former business partner.

My mentor.

And the man who disappeared after being accused of financial fraud.

Everyone believed he had taken millions of dollars and run.

Including me.

I remembered the headlines.

The accusations.

The investigation.

The day police arrived at our office.

Michael had looked at me and said one sentence.

"Emily, don't believe everything they show you."

I thought he was trying to escape responsibility.

I thought he was guilty.

Three days later, he disappeared.

No body.

No explanation.

Just gone.

And now he was sitting across from Daniel and Margaret in a photograph.

Alive.

I looked at Detective Harris.

"How did you find this?"

"We traced the financial transactions."

He pointed at the photo.

"This meeting happened two weeks before your fall."

Two weeks.

Daniel knew.

While I was preparing for our babies.

While I was painting the nursery.

While I was believing my husband was building a future with me.

He was meeting with a man who had vanished seven years ago.

"What were they discussing?"

"We don't know yet."

I looked at the picture again.

Michael was holding the same document.

The same document Daniel had in his hand before the argument.

The same document connected to the fake loan under my name.

Something inside me clicked.

The fall wasn't about the money.

The money was only part of it.

There was something bigger.

Something Daniel was terrified of losing.

When I returned to the hospital room, Rebecca was waiting.

She immediately noticed my expression.

"What happened?"

I handed her the photo.

She looked at it.

Then looked back at me.

"Who is this?"

"Michael Bennett."

Her face changed.

"You know him?"

"I used to."

Rebecca studied the photo carefully.

"Why would a missing person be meeting with Daniel?"

I sat down slowly.

"That's what I need to find out."

That night, I couldn't sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the staircase.

Daniel's hand.

His expression.

The moment I realized the man I loved was capable of hurting me.

But now there was something worse.

The possibility that the fall wasn't an accident of anger.

It was planned.

I opened my laptop.

I searched Michael's name.

Old articles appeared.

"Financial Executive Accused Of Massive Fraud."

"Partner Claims Innocence After Disappearance."

"Michael Bennett Vanishes Before Trial."

I clicked through every article.

But something was strange.

All the reports came from the same three news outlets.

All published within twenty-four hours.

All using almost identical wording.

I leaned closer.

That wasn't normal.

Someone had controlled the story.

Someone had wanted everyone to believe Michael was guilty.

Then I remembered his words.

"Don't believe everything they show you."

For seven years, I thought that was the desperate sentence of a guilty man.

Now I wondered if it was the warning of an innocent one.

The next morning, Rebecca arrived with more information.

"I found something."

She placed a folder on my bed.

"What?"

"The loan documents."

I opened it.

"There was a second signature."

I looked confused.

"What second signature?"

She pointed to the bottom corner.

A witness signature.

My eyes moved toward the name.

Margaret Carter.

Daniel's mother.

"She witnessed a document with a fake signature from me?"

Rebecca nodded.

"And there's more."

She pulled out another paper.

"This loan wasn't created to help Margaret."

I looked at her.

"Then what was it for?"

Rebecca took a breath.

"It was used as collateral."

"For what?"

She looked directly at me.

"To buy back control of a company."

My heart stopped.

"What company?"

She slid another document forward.

I saw the name.

Bennett Financial Solutions.

Michael's company.

The room went silent.

Daniel wasn't just hiding debt.

He was connected to Michael's disappearance.

I stood up too quickly.

Pain moved through my body.

Rebecca immediately helped me sit.

"Emily."

I shook my head.

"No."

I looked at the papers.

"He destroyed Michael."

"Maybe."

"And now he used my name to cover it."

Rebecca didn't answer.

Because she knew.

We were no longer investigating a simple domestic crime.

This was something much bigger.

That afternoon, Detective Harris contacted us.

He had located Michael.

Not officially.

Not through records.

Through a hidden address connected to one of the financial transfers.

He wanted me to come with him.

Rebecca insisted on coming too.

The address led us to a small house outside the city.

Nothing about it looked suspicious.

That was almost worse.

People like Daniel didn't hide in dark places.

They hid behind normal appearances.

Detective Harris knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

Still nothing.

Then he looked at the window.

"Someone was here recently."

Rebecca looked at me.

"How do you know?"

"The curtains are moving."

My heartbeat increased.

Detective Harris reached for the door.

It was unlocked.

Inside was silence.

A small table.

A chair.

A stack of documents.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them.

I walked closer.

Most were of Daniel.

Daniel entering buildings.

Daniel meeting people.

Daniel handing documents to strangers.

But then I saw one picture that made me freeze.

It was taken three weeks before my fall.

Daniel was standing outside my house.

And beside him was Michael.

But they weren't arguing.

They weren't meeting secretly.

They were shaking hands.

I picked up another photo.

Then another.

Michael hadn't disappeared from Daniel's life.

He had been working with him.

I felt sick.

"Emily."

Rebecca's voice was quiet.

I turned around.

She was holding a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Written.

By hand.

"Who found this?"

Rebecca looked toward the empty hallway.

"No one."

I slowly opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only a few lines.

Emily,

If you are reading this, Daniel already knows you found the camera.

Do not trust the police report.

Do not trust Margaret.

And most importantly...

Do not trust the man you think disappeared.

My breathing stopped.

Because the letter wasn't signed by Michael.

It was signed by someone else.

Someone I never expected.

Someone who had been watching Daniel all along.

Then Detective Harris' phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

He looked at me.

"Emily..."

I stood still.

"What?"

He lowered the phone slowly.

"The person who sent you the message has arrived."

May you like

A shadow appeared behind the open doorway.

And then a familiar voice whispered my name...
