Chapter 3 - The Document That Changed Everything

The paper was sitting on my phone screen.

A single image.

A single name.

And suddenly, the entire story Daniel had created started falling apart.

I zoomed in.

My hands were shaking.

The document was a bank agreement.

At the top was the logo of a private financial company.

Below it were several lines of information.

A loan.

A large loan.

A loan I knew nothing about.

But the name attached to it made my stomach drop.

Emily Carter.

My name.

I stared at the screen, unable to breathe.

Daniel had not just been hiding money.

He had been hiding debt.

A debt created under my identity.

I looked at the message again.

"Emily, you need to know what Daniel was hiding before you fell."

My fingers moved quickly.

I typed back.

"Who are you?"

For several seconds, there was no response.

Then the phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Another message.

"Someone who tried to warn you before."

I felt a chill.

Before?

I looked around the hospital room.

The lights were dim.

The hallway outside was quiet.

But suddenly, I felt like someone was watching me.

I called Rebecca immediately.

She answered after the second ring.

"Emily?"

"Rebecca, someone sent me a document."

Her voice changed.

"What kind of document?"

I sent the picture.

The silence on the other end lasted longer than I expected.

"Rebecca?"

"Emily."

Her voice was lower.

"Do not open any links from that number."

"There are no links."

"Do not respond again until I verify this."

I swallowed.

"You know what this is?"

"I know what it looks like."

That answer scared me.

"What does that mean?"

Rebecca didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"It means Daniel may have been preparing for this longer than we thought."

I looked at the document again.

The loan amount was enormous.

More than I could ever imagine.

"How did he do this?"

"I don't know yet."

"But my name is on it."

"I know."

My chest tightened.

Rebecca continued.

"Emily, listen carefully. Did you ever sign anything unusual in the last year?"

I thought back.

Documents.

Meetings.

House paperwork.

Insurance forms.

Daniel always handled those things.

He always told me:

"Don't worry. I've already reviewed everything."

A terrible feeling entered my mind.

"Rebecca..."

"What?"

"I trusted him."

Her silence told me everything.

That was the answer.

I had trusted him.

And he had used it.

The next morning, Rebecca arrived at the hospital with printed documents.

She placed them on the table.

"I ran a preliminary search."

I looked at the papers.

"What did you find?"

She took a breath.

"The loan was created eight months ago."

Eight months.

I counted backward.

I was already pregnant.

Daniel had been planning something while we were decorating the nursery.

While we were choosing names.

While he was putting his hand on my stomach and pretending to be excited.

"Who approved this?"

Rebecca pointed to the signature.

I looked.

My heart stopped.

The signature was mine.

But it wasn't my handwriting.

Someone had copied it.

"He forged my signature."

Rebecca nodded.

"Most likely."

I looked toward the window.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The arguments.

The pressure.

The anger when I wanted to freeze the account.

Daniel wasn't just protecting Margaret.

He was protecting himself.

He needed money.

He needed access.

And I had become the person standing between him and everything he wanted.

Rebecca sat beside me.

"Emily, there is something else."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She opened another file.

"This company that issued the loan."

She pointed to the address.

"It's connected to someone."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

Rebecca looked at me.

"Margaret."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

His mother.

The woman who had been taking money from us.

The woman Daniel defended every time.

They were connected.

But I still didn't understand how deep it went.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I stared at the screen.

Rebecca shook her head.

"Don't answer."

But I did.

I needed to hear him.

I needed to know if he would lie again.

"Emily."

His voice sounded gentle.

Almost loving.

That made me sick.

"What do you want?"

A pause.

Then:

"I heard Rebecca came to see you."

I looked at Rebecca.

She immediately understood.

"How did you know?"

Daniel ignored the question.

"You need to stop listening to people who want to destroy our family."

I almost laughed.

"Our family?"

"Yes."

"The family you destroyed?"

Silence.

For a moment, his fake kindness disappeared.

Then he lowered his voice.

"Emily, you are emotional right now."

There it was.

The same strategy.

Make me look unstable.

Make everyone question me.

"You lost the babies."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Don't."

"I'm just saying you aren't thinking clearly."

I closed my eyes.

The cruelty of his words felt worse than the pain in my body.

"You pushed me."

Daniel became quiet.

Then he said something I never expected.

"You should be careful what you accuse people of."

My heart started beating faster.

Because that wasn't a denial.

That was a warning.

Before I could respond, he continued.

"You don't know everything."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Rebecca looked concerned.

"What did he say?"

I repeated his words.

She immediately stood.

"Emily, we need to leave this hospital."

"What?"

"If he knows we have the footage, he may try something."

I looked at the door.

The same door Daniel walked through pretending to be my husband.

Now it felt different.

Like a barrier between me and danger.

A few hours later, Detective Harris called.

He said they found something important.

I met him in a private room downstairs.

He placed a folder on the table.

"We searched financial records connected to Daniel."

I opened the folder.

Inside were transactions.

Payments.

Transfers.

Names.

Then I saw one name repeated again and again.

Margaret Carter.

But there was another name.

One I didn't recognize.

A person receiving large payments.

"Who is this?"

Detective Harris looked serious.

"We don't know yet."

"Then why show me?"

He slid another photo across the table.

It was taken outside a restaurant two weeks before my fall.

Daniel was there.

Margaret was there.

And sitting across from them was someone else.

Someone holding the same document Daniel had been carrying the night he pushed me.

I looked closer.

The person turned slightly toward the camera.

My blood went cold.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it before.

Not recently.

Years ago.

Before I met Daniel.

Before I became Emily Carter.

Detective Harris noticed my reaction.

"You know this person?"

I couldn't speak.

Because the truth was worse than I imagined.

The person in the photo was someone who was supposed to be gone forever.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

May you like

Only four words.

"Emily, he's still alive."
