Chapter 5 - The Person My Father Trusted Most

The first thing I noticed was the silence.
Not the silence of an empty room.
The silence of someone hiding.
I stood at the basement doorway, staring into the darkness below.
Evelyn was behind me.
But she wasn't looking at the stairs.
She was looking at someone else.
Someone standing in the shadows.
"Who are you?"
My voice barely came out.
The figure didn't answer.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then the person stepped forward.
The light from the cabin hallway reached his face.
And my entire body went cold.
Because I knew him.
Not personally.
But from the photographs.
From my father's files.
From the name written hundreds of times in his documents.
"Victor Hale."
Evelyn whispered the name.
The man smiled slightly.
"Still remembering me, Evelyn?"
I looked at her.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
That told me everything.
She knew him.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
Victor looked at the flash drive in my hand.
Not at me.
The flash drive.
"I came because I knew Claire would eventually find it."
My grip tightened.
"You knew about this?"
He slowly walked into the cabin.
"I knew your father hid something."
"Did you kill him?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
The room became silent.
Victor looked at me.
Then he smiled.
A small, emotionless smile.
"Your father always said you were more like him than anyone realized."
I felt anger rising.
"Answer me."
Victor looked toward the old box on the table.
"Your father was a smart man."
"That isn't an answer."
"No."
He looked back at me.
"It isn't."
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Claire, don't listen to him."
Victor's expression changed.
"Still protecting her?"
Evelyn didn't respond.
That was when I understood.
This wasn't the first time they had stood across from each other.
This was an old battle.
One that started long before I knew anything about it.
"Why did Brandon marry me?"
Victor looked at me.
And for the first time, his expression became serious.
"Because of your father."
My heart sank.
"What does my father have to do with Brandon?"
Victor walked toward the table.
He touched one of the photographs.
"Your father discovered a network."
"What network?"
"A network of people who controlled businesses, contracts, and information."
I stared at him.
"And Brandon was part of it?"
Victor didn't answer directly.
That was enough.
I looked at the photograph of Brandon and my father.
"I thought Brandon met my family by accident."
Victor laughed quietly.
"Nothing about Brandon was accidental."
The words made my stomach turn.
Every memory changed.
The first dinner.
The first meeting.
The way Brandon tried so hard to impress my father.
The way my father looked uncomfortable.
I thought my father disliked him.
Maybe he was trying to warn me.
"Why didn't my father tell me?"
Victor looked at me.
"Because he was trying to keep you alive."
Those words hurt.
Because they came from the person I trusted least.
"Then why did he die?"
Victor became silent.
And that silence was louder than any answer.
Evelyn moved toward the table.
"Claire, you need to see the rest of the files."
She opened the box again.
Inside was a small notebook.
Old.
Worn.
My father's handwriting covered every page.
I took it carefully.
The first page had one sentence.
"If something happens to me, do not trust anyone who says they loved me."
My hands started shaking.
I turned the page.
Names.
Dates.
Meetings.
Payments.
And one name repeated over and over.
BRANDON.
But there was something else.
A name I had never expected.
My own.
CLAIRE BENNETT.
I stared at it.
"Why is my name here?"
Nobody answered.
I flipped through more pages.
Then I found a photograph.
A picture of me.
But I was young.
Maybe seventeen.
On the back, my father wrote:
"She cannot know yet."
I looked up.
"Know what?"
Victor stared at the photograph.
"Your father discovered that Brandon wasn't looking for a wife."
My heart stopped.
"He was looking for something."
"What?"
Victor looked at the flash drive.
"That."
I stepped back.
"But why would my father leave something for me?"
"Because he knew Brandon would eventually come for it."
I thought about the mountain.
The push.
The fall.
It suddenly became clear.
Brandon wasn't trying to kill me because he hated me.
He was trying to kill me because he thought I knew something.
Something I didn't even know existed.
The cabin suddenly felt unsafe.
I looked toward the windows.
"How did you find us?"
Victor didn't answer.
Evelyn did.
And her answer made me freeze.
"He followed the tracker."
I turned.
"What tracker?"
Evelyn looked at my jacket.
Slowly.
Then at my hospital bracelet still attached to my wrist.
My blood went cold.
"You mean..."
Evelyn nodded.
"The hospital bracelet."
I ripped it off immediately.
Too late.
Someone already knew where I was.
Victor walked closer.
"Claire, you need to understand something."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"Brandon is not the most dangerous person looking for that drive."
My stomach tightened.
"Then who is?"
Victor didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Evelyn.
And said:
"Tell her who really betrayed her father."
Evelyn's face changed.
"No."
Victor smiled.
"You owe her the truth."
I looked between them.
"Evelyn?"
She looked down.
Like she had been carrying a secret for years.
"I was there the night your father died."
The room stopped.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"I was the last person who saw him alive."
I stepped away.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because he made me promise."
"Promise what?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Promise that I would never tell you the person responsible."
My heart started pounding.
"Who?"
Evelyn looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
"Someone you trusted more than anyone."
Before I could ask again, a sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Victor immediately turned.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
"They found us."
Evelyn grabbed the notebook.
"We have to go."
But before we reached the back door, my phone started ringing.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
Nobody spoke.
I answered.
At first, there was only breathing.
Then a voice.
A voice I knew.
A voice I never thought I would hear again.
"Claire..."
My knees almost collapsed.
Because it wasn't Brandon.
It wasn't Ryan.
It was my father.
The man who had been dead for ten years.
And before I could say a word, he whispered:
"Do not trust Evelyn."
May you like
The call ended.
Then the basement door behind us slowly opened by itself...
