Chapter 4 - The Truth Hidden Beneath My Father’s Name

The hospital door opened slowly.
I froze.
Evelyn froze.
For one second, neither of us moved.
Because we both knew.
Whoever was standing outside that door wasn't there to check on me.
They were there because they knew.
The hallway lights flickered above us.
The emergency alarm continued screaming.
A shadow appeared through the opening.
Then a voice came.
"Claire."
My heart stopped.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it every morning.
Every night.
Every time I believed I was safe.
"Brandon."
He stepped into the room.
My husband.
The man who had pushed me from a cliff.
He looked completely different from the person I remembered.
His face was tired.
His eyes were red.
But I knew better now.
Brandon was an expert at pretending.
He slowly closed the door behind him.
"Claire..."
His voice trembled.
"I thought I lost you."
I stared at him.
The old version of me would have believed him.
The old version of me would have cried.
The old version of me would have reached for his hand.
But that woman had fallen from a mountain.
She didn't exist anymore.
"You thought I was dead."
Brandon stopped.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
His expression changed.
A tiny crack.
A tiny moment where the mask disappeared.
Then he recovered.
"Who told you that?"
I almost smiled.
Because even now, he wasn't asking if I was okay.
He wasn't asking about our baby.
He was asking what I knew.
"You came here because you thought I had the flash drive."
His face went still.
Evelyn immediately stepped between us.
"Claire, don't."
But it was too late.
Brandon looked at Evelyn.
And something dangerous appeared in his eyes.
"You shouldn't have brought her into this."
My stomach tightened.
"Into what?"
Neither of them answered.
I looked between them.
"You both know something."
Brandon took a step closer.
"Claire, you don't understand."
"No."
My voice became stronger.
"I understand perfectly."
I pointed at him.
"You pushed me."
His jaw tightened.
"You think that is what happened."
"No."
I looked directly into his eyes.
"I know."
The room became silent.
For the first time since I met him, Brandon looked afraid.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
Because he realized something.
I wasn't the woman he left on that mountain anymore.
A nurse suddenly rushed past the door.
"Security is checking the power issue."
Brandon glanced toward the hallway.
A distraction.
A chance.
I saw it.
And so did Evelyn.
"Claire, we need to go."
I grabbed the flash drive from the table.
Brandon noticed.
His entire expression changed.
"Where did you get that?"
There it was.
The truth.
Not concern.
Not confusion.
Fear.
"You know what this is."
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
Evelyn grabbed my arm.
"We leave now."
We moved toward the back exit of the room.
Brandon stepped forward.
"Claire, listen to me."
I stopped.
Because a part of me still wanted to hear him explain.
A part of me still wanted there to be another answer.
"Why?"
He looked at me.
"Because if you watch that video, you will destroy everything."
I stared at him.
"Whose everything?"
He didn't respond.
Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.
"Did you kill my father?"
Brandon's face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Like I had just said a name he never expected to hear again.
Before he could answer, the hallway lights came back.
The alarm stopped.
And footsteps approached.
Security.
Brandon stepped away.
The moment disappeared.
But his eyes stayed on me.
And in those eyes, I saw the truth.
He was not afraid of losing me.
He was afraid of what I would find.
Evelyn drove us away from the hospital twenty minutes later.
Neither of us spoke.
The city lights passed outside the window.
My hand remained closed around the flash drive.
The smallest object in my life had become the most dangerous.
"Where are we going?"
I asked.
Evelyn kept driving.
"Somewhere safe."
I almost laughed.
"Nobody says that anymore unless something terrible is about to happen."
She looked at me.
"You are right."
That answer scared me.
We drove to an old cabin outside the city.
It belonged to Evelyn's family.
At least, that's what she said.
The place was small.
Quiet.
Hidden.
Exactly the kind of place someone would choose if they didn't want to be found.
Inside, Evelyn locked every door.
Every window.
Then she turned toward me.
"Before you watch the rest of that video, you need to know something."
I sat down.
"What?"
She took a deep breath.
"Your father wasn't just investigating Brandon."
I waited.
"He was investigating people above Brandon."
My eyebrows tightened.
"People above him?"
She nodded.
"Brandon was only a small piece."
I looked at the flash drive.
"What was my father trying to expose?"
Evelyn walked toward an old cabinet.
She removed a box.
A box covered in dust.
She placed it on the table.
"This belonged to your father."
My hands froze.
"How did you get this?"
"Ryan gave it to me."
I looked up.
"Ryan was here?"
"Two years ago."
My chest tightened.
"Before he disappeared?"
She nodded.
"He knew Brandon was going to come after him."
I opened the box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Newspaper articles.
And one name repeated over and over.
BRANDON VALE.
But there was another name.
A name I didn't recognize.
VICTOR HALE.
"Who is he?"
Evelyn looked away.
"The man who introduced Brandon to your family."
I felt sick.
Because I suddenly remembered.
The first time Brandon met my father.
The first time he came to our house.
My father had acted strangely.
At the time, I thought it was because he was protective.
But now...
Maybe he was afraid.
I pulled out another photograph.
It showed my father standing beside Brandon.
But behind them was someone else.
Victor Hale.
And on the back of the picture, my father had written something.
"Never let Claire know the truth until she is ready."
My fingers trembled.
"What truth?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at the clock.
Then at the window.
"What?"
She walked closer.
"Someone followed us."
My heart dropped.
"How do you know?"
She pointed outside.
A car was parked across the road.
The engine was running.
The lights were off.
I stood slowly.
"Brandon?"
"No."
Evelyn's voice became quiet.
"Worse."
The car door opened.
A man stepped out.
He walked toward the cabin.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like he knew exactly where we were.
Evelyn grabbed the box.
"Claire, there is a basement."
I looked confused.
"What?"
"Your father built one here years ago."
"Why?"
Her face turned pale.
"Because he knew one day someone would come looking."
The footsteps stopped outside the front door.
Three knocks.
Slow.
Controlled.
The kind of knock from someone who wasn't asking permission.
I held my breath.
Evelyn moved toward the basement door.
Then I noticed something.
The door was already open.
It hadn't been opened by us.
Someone had been inside.
Evelyn looked down.
And whispered:
"That's impossible."
I looked at the darkness below.
Then I saw it.
A small envelope sitting on the basement stairs.
My name was written across the front.
In my father's handwriting.
I reached down and picked it up.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was only one sentence.
"Claire, if you are reading this, it means Brandon failed."
I looked at Evelyn.
She looked terrified.
Because she knew there was more.
I turned the paper over.
There was another line.
One that made my blood run cold.
"Do not trust the person standing beside you."
I slowly looked up.
Because Evelyn was no longer looking at me.
May you like
She was looking behind me.
At someone standing in the basement doorway...
