Chapter 1 - The Moment He Let Me Fall

A pregnant woman grabbed a stranger’s rescue rope inside a frozen canyon and whispered: "Please… tell my baby I tried."
When Brandon arrived at the hospital, he found his wife’s broken wedding bracelet inside the rescue bag.
But one word was scratched into the metal clasp: "LIAR."
Brandon suddenly realized she had survived.
I still remember the exact moment I realized my husband was trying to kill me.
Not because of the fall.
Not because of the pain.
But because of the look in his eyes before he pushed me.
It was the look of a stranger wearing the face of the man I had loved for six years.
My name was Claire Bennett, and I was eight months pregnant with our first child.
For years, Brandon and I had dreamed about this baby.
We had a small apartment, ordinary jobs, and a life that most people would probably call simple.
But to me, it was everything.
Brandon used to place his hand on my stomach every night before bed and whisper to our baby.
"One day, I'll teach you how to climb mountains."
I would laugh and tell him,
"Maybe start with teaching the baby how to walk first."
He always smiled.
He always kissed my forehead.
He always made me believe I was the luckiest woman alive.
That was why I never saw the danger coming.
The trip to Glacier National Park was supposed to be our last adventure before becoming parents.
Brandon said we needed one final memory before our lives changed forever.
I remember standing beside our black SUV that morning, wearing my white winter jacket while snow covered the mountain paths around us.
The air was cold, but I felt warm.
Because Brandon was holding my hand.
Or at least, I thought he was.
We hiked for almost two hours.
The mountains were breathtaking.
The snow-covered peaks stretched endlessly into the sky.
A helicopter passed far away, moving like a tiny red dot against the white landscape.
I took a picture of Brandon standing in front of the mountains.
He looked happy.
He looked like my husband.
I had no idea I was taking a picture of the man who was about to destroy my life.
"Come on, Claire," Brandon said.
His voice sounded excited.
"There is a viewpoint ahead. You'll love it."
I smiled.
"You always say that."
"Because I'm always right."
I laughed.
That was the last normal conversation we ever had.
When we reached the cliff, I immediately felt nervous.
The edge was covered with snow.
The wind was stronger there.
I placed one hand over my stomach instinctively.
Our baby moved.
A tiny kick.
I smiled.
"Did you feel that?"
Brandon looked at me.
For a second, I thought he was emotional.
I thought he was sharing that beautiful moment with me.
But his expression was different.
Empty.
Cold.
I turned toward him.
"Brandon?"
He stepped closer.
Too close.
I reached for his hand.
"Take my hand."
I thought he was worried I would slip.
I thought he was protecting me.
Instead, he leaned closer and whispered something I would never forget.
"Claire, nobody is going to find you down there."
My smile disappeared.
"What?"
The wind became louder.
Or maybe I just stopped hearing everything else.
Brandon's eyes did not change.
There was no fear.
No regret.
No hesitation.
Only calculation.
"Brandon, what are you talking about?"
He looked at my stomach.
Then back at me.
And in that moment, I understood.
The man standing in front of me was not trying to save me.
He was trying to erase me.
I stepped backward.
"Why?"
My voice cracked.
"Why would you do this?"
He didn't answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Because part of me was still waiting for him to tell me this was a mistake.
A cruel joke.
Anything.
But Brandon only reached forward.
And pushed.
The world disappeared.
I remember the feeling of my feet leaving the ground.
I remember my hands reaching for him.
I remember screaming his name.
"Brandon!"
But he didn't move.
He just watched.
I fell through the snow-covered air.
My body hit the icy slope below.
Pain exploded through me.
I couldn't breathe.
I couldn't move.
The first thing I did was put my hand over my stomach.
"Baby..."
My voice barely existed.
I waited.
One second.
Two seconds.
Then I felt it.
A tiny movement.
My baby was still alive.
And somehow, that gave me the strength to open my eyes.
Above me, the cliff looked impossibly far away.
Brandon was gone.
He didn't call my name.
He didn't come looking for me.
He didn't even check if I was alive.
That was when my fear became something else.
Anger.
I tried to move.
My leg screamed with pain.
My shoulder felt broken.
But I forced myself forward.
I couldn't die there.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because my child deserved a chance to live.
The snow around me was freezing.
My clothes were soaked.
My hands were shaking.
Then I saw it.
A dark opening behind a wall of snow and rocks.
A small cave.
It wasn't much.
But it was shelter.
I dragged myself inside.
Every movement felt impossible.
Every breath burned.
I curled up against the cold stone and closed my eyes.
I thought about Brandon.
About every dinner.
Every kiss.
Every promise.
How could someone who said he loved me decide that my life had no value?
Hours passed.
Maybe more.
I didn't know.
My phone was gone.
My voice was too weak to scream.
But I refused to give up.
Then I heard something.
A sound outside.
Footsteps.
My heart started racing.
For one moment, I believed Brandon had returned.
Maybe guilt had finally reached him.
Maybe he came back to save me.
Maybe my husband was still somewhere inside that person.
I slowly moved toward the cave entrance.
But then I heard voices.
Two men.
Not Brandon.
"I checked the area," one voice said.
"Nobody could survive that fall."
My blood turned cold.
The second voice answered.
"Good. Then Brandon's story stays clean."
I covered my mouth.
Because I finally understood.
This was not an accident.
This was planned.
They weren't searching for me.
They were making sure I was dead.
I stayed completely still.
The voices disappeared.
But their words remained.
Brandon had already prepared a story.
A story where I was careless.
A story where he was the grieving husband.
A story where my baby and I never existed.
I don't know how long I stayed in that cave.
But sometime during the night, I made a promise.
I would survive.
I would expose him.
And I would make everyone know the truth.
The next morning, I heard another sound.
A helicopter.
My heart jumped.
I screamed until my throat burned.
"Help!"
Again.
And again.
Finally, a beam of light entered the cave.
A rescue worker found me.
When they lifted me out, I looked back at the mountain.
Somewhere above me was the man who had tried to bury me alive.
But he didn't know one thing.
I was still breathing.
At the hospital, doctors immediately rushed me into emergency care.
They saved my baby.
They repaired my injuries.
And for the first time in many hours, I felt safe.
But safety didn't last.
Because when I woke up, a police officer was standing beside my bed.
He looked uncomfortable.
"Mrs. Bennett?"
I nodded.
"We need to ask you about your fall."
I stared at him.
"My husband pushed me."
The officer froze.
Then he slowly opened his notebook.
"That's impossible."
I felt my heart drop.
"Why?"
He looked at me carefully.
"Because your husband reported that you died yesterday morning."
I couldn't speak.
The room became silent.
Then the officer placed something on the table.
A photograph.
It showed Brandon standing beside the cliff.
Crying.
Holding my jacket.
Pretending to be broken.
But there was one thing wrong.
The photo was taken after he pushed me.
And behind him, hidden in the snow, was something that proved he had not been alone.
I reached for the photograph.
May you like
Then I saw the person standing beside Brandon in the reflection of his sunglasses...
A person who was supposed to be nowhere near the mountain.
