Chapter 5 - The Truth Hidden Behind Grant Avery

A man’s name appeared on an old photograph, and Delia whispered: "That can’t be him."

Jesse watched her stare at the picture of Grant Avery standing beside her missing mother.

But one detail on the back of the photograph made his expression change: A date written three days after Delia’s mother supposedly died.

The date proved one thing.

Grant had lied.

The silence after that discovery felt heavier than anything Delia had experienced that night.

She stared at the photograph.

Then at Jesse.

Then back at the photograph.

Grant.

The man who had spent the entire evening pretending to care about her happiness.

The man who had smiled at her like she was someone from his past.

The man who had looked surprised when she arrived with Jesse.

Now his face was sitting beside her mother’s.

A memory she had buried for years started forcing its way back into her mind.

Grant standing at her apartment door after their breakup.

Grant saying he wanted a "clean future."

Grant telling her that some people were simply not meant to be part of the same world.

She had believed him.

Because believing him was easier than believing the truth.

"What is this?"

Her voice was quiet.

Nobody answered.

Delia looked at Jesse.

"I asked you a question."

Jesse took the photograph from her carefully.

"Grant Avery is not who he says he is."

She laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"That seems to be the only thing everyone knows except me."

"Delia."

"No."

She looked around.

"Everyone here has information about my life except me."

Her eyes moved toward Clara.

"My mother disappeared."

Then toward Jesse.

"You knew about a file."

Then the photograph.

"And now my ex-boyfriend was connected to her."

She shook her head.

"Do you understand how insane this feels?"

Jesse did not interrupt.

Because she was right.

For the first time that night, Delia did not look like the woman who needed protection.

She looked like someone who had finally reached the point where fear was no longer stronger than anger.

"Tell me everything."

Jesse looked at Clara.

Clara slowly nodded.

"She deserves it."

They moved into a private room at the end of the hotel hallway.

The celebration continued behind closed doors.

People laughed.

Music played.

Nobody knew that Delia’s entire understanding of her life had just collapsed.

Jesse placed the file on the table.

"This file was created twelve years ago."

Delia frowned.

"Why?"

"Because someone discovered that your mother had hidden information."

"What information?"

Jesse looked at the documents.

"Evidence."

"Of what?"

He hesitated.

"Of a network of people who controlled businesses, security companies, and private organizations."

Delia stared.

"And Grant?"

"Grant was involved."

Her hands tightened.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

Jesse noticed.

"You don’t believe it."

"Because I know him."

Jesse looked at her.

"You know the version he showed you."

That sentence hurt.

Because it sounded exactly like something she had told herself about Jesse.

"You’re saying I never knew him."

"Yes."

Delia looked away.

That was the most frightening part.

Because she knew what it felt like.

To realize someone had been acting.

She had spent the entire evening believing Jesse was fake.

Now she was discovering the man she trusted for two years might have been the real performance.

Clara sat quietly.

Then she spoke.

"Your mother trusted very few people."

Delia looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because she learned that people close to her could be dangerous."

"Was Grant close to her?"

Clara nodded.

"He was young when they met."

Delia froze.

"What?"

"Grant didn't enter your life by accident."

The room became silent.

Jesse watched Delia carefully.

"He approached you because of your mother."

The words felt impossible.

"No."

"Delia."

"No."

She stood.

"You’re telling me my entire relationship was fake?"

Nobody answered.

Because sometimes silence was worse.

She remembered everything.

The first time Grant met her.

The way he already knew small details about her family.

The way he asked strange questions.

The way he became uncomfortable whenever she mentioned her childhood.

She had thought he was just private.

Now every memory looked different.

"Why me?"

Jesse stepped closer.

"Because you are the last person who knows where your mother hid the original evidence."

Delia looked confused.

"I don’t know anything."

"Your mother made sure you wouldn’t."

"What does that mean?"

Clara reached into her bag.

She pulled out another photograph.

This one was newer.

Delia looked at it.

Her breath stopped.

It showed her.

As a child.

Standing outside a house.

Holding something in her hand.

"What is that?"

Clara pointed.

"A key."

Delia stared.

"I don’t remember that."

"You were five."

"Where was it?"

Clara looked at Jesse.

Then back at Delia.

"The house where your mother disappeared."

A chill moved through the room.

Delia slowly sat down.

"That house was destroyed."

"No."

Clara’s voice was quiet.

"That is what everyone was told."

Jesse opened another document.

"The property still exists."

Delia looked at him.

"Where?"

He hesitated.

And she immediately noticed.

"Why do you not want to tell me?"

"Because if Grant knows we found it, he’ll move."

The name alone made her angry.

"Then we go before he knows."

Jesse looked surprised.

"You want to go?"

"I want answers."

The determination in her voice made everyone silent.

For years, Delia had accepted missing pieces.

Missing memories.

Missing explanations.

She had convinced herself that some questions were too painful to ask.

Not anymore.

Jesse studied her.

"You understand this could change everything."

She looked directly at him.

"Everything already changed when my fake boyfriend turned out to have an army."

For a second, Jesse almost smiled.

Almost.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The expression on his face changed immediately.

"Who is it?"

He didn’t answer.

Delia stood.

"Jesse."

He answered.

"Speak."

A voice came through.

Low.

Urgent.

Delia couldn’t hear everything.

Only fragments.

"...Grant..."

"...already knows..."

"...she is not safe..."

Jesse’s face became serious.

"Where is he?"

A pause.

Then Jesse looked toward Delia.

And that scared her.

Because he looked like someone who had just received the worst possible news.

"What?"

He ended the call.

Nobody moved.

"Jesse."

He looked at her.

"Grant is not running."

Delia felt her stomach drop.

"What does that mean?"

"It means he expected us to find the file."

Clara stood slowly.

"No."

Jesse looked at her.

"Yes."

"What?"

He turned the photograph over.

The date.

The handwriting.

The hidden message.

Everything.

"It was planted."

Delia stared.

"By who?"

Jesse didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The room suddenly became colder.

Then Delia’s phone vibrated.

She looked down.

A message.

From Grant.

Her hands froze.

Jesse immediately reached for the phone.

But she moved first.

The message contained only one sentence.

"Delia, ask Jesse why he was the one who found your mother first."

Her heart stopped.

She looked up.

Slowly.

"Jesse..."

He said nothing.

Because the answer was written in the next message that arrived.

A photo appeared.

A recent photo.

Taken inside the hotel.

Taken only minutes ago.

It showed Jesse standing beside Delia.

May you like

And behind them, hidden in the reflection of the window...

was a woman who should have been dead.
