Chapter 3 - The Secret Inside The Photograph

A woman’s voice came through the phone speaker and whispered: "Tell Jesse I never forgot what he promised me."
Delia watched the color disappear from Jesse’s face as he stared at the old photograph.
But one detail on the image made her freeze: A small bracelet around the child’s wrist with the letter "D."
Jesse realized the woman in the picture was connected to Delia.
The ballroom had become too quiet.
The kind of quiet that happened when everyone knew something important was being hidden.
Delia stood there holding the edge of her wine-red dress, trying to understand how her simple plan had turned into something she could not recognize.
Five hours earlier, she had walked into the Meridian Hotel hoping to make her ex-boyfriend jealous.
Now she was standing beside a man surrounded by strangers who called him boss.
A man who looked at a photograph like it had just brought a ghost back into his life.
"Who is she?"
Jesse did not answer.
Delia stepped closer.
"Jesse."
His eyes moved toward her.
For a second, she saw something she had never seen before.
Not the confident man who had defended her.
Not the mysterious stranger who seemed impossible to intimidate.
She saw someone who was hurt.
Deeply.
"You know her."
Jesse looked down at the phone.
"I knew her."
The way he said it made Delia’s stomach tighten.
Past tense.
Not "I know her."
"I knew her."
"What happened?"
Before Jesse could answer, one of the men beside him spoke.
"Boss, we should leave."
Jesse ignored him.
"Not yet."
The man looked surprised.
Nobody questioned Jesse.
Nobody except Delia.
She noticed.
Every person around him waited for his decision.
Every person listened.
But Jesse was standing there explaining himself to her.
A woman he had met hours ago.
A woman who had hired him to pretend.
That made no sense.
"Who are you?"
The question finally came out.
Jesse looked at her.
"I told you."
"You told me your name."
She shook her head.
"I didn’t ask what name you use."
The room seemed to disappear.
Only the two of them remained.
Jesse looked away.
"My name is Jesse."
"That’s not enough."
A long silence followed.
Then he said:
"I run a private security organization."
Delia waited.
That was clearly not the full answer.
"And?"
His jaw tightened.
"And people who work with me have a habit of protecting me."
She glanced around.
"That’s what you call this?"
Jesse followed her eyes.
The men.
The silence.
The respect.
"No."
He looked back at her.
"I call it a responsibility."
Before Delia could respond, another message appeared on the phone.
Jesse looked down.
His expression changed immediately.
"What now?"
Delia saw his reaction.
"You’re scared."
"I’m concerned."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You’re scared."
That surprised him.
Maybe because she was right.
Jesse had faced danger without blinking.
But this message had affected him.
"What did you see?"
He hesitated.
Then he handed her the phone.
Delia looked at the screen.
The photograph was older than she expected.
A young woman stood outside a house.
Beside her was a little girl.
The girl was maybe five years old.
The child was smiling.
The woman was smiling too.
But there was something strange.
Someone had written on the back of the photograph.
Delia turned it over.
Four words.
"She doesn’t know yet."
Her heart stopped.
"Who doesn’t know what?"
Jesse took the phone back.
"Delia."
The way he said her name made her uncomfortable.
"What?"
He looked at the picture again.
"Have you ever seen this woman before?"
Delia studied the photograph.
The face looked familiar.
Not enough to recognize.
But enough to feel something.
A strange feeling.
Like a memory she could not reach.
"No."
Jesse watched her carefully.
"You’re sure?"
"Yes."
A pause.
Then Delia pointed at the child.
"Who is that?"
Jesse didn’t answer.
That was when she knew.
The child mattered.
"Jesse."
He slowly looked at her.
"The little girl."
His silence became the answer.
Delia felt cold.
"That’s me."
The words left her mouth before she could stop them.
Jesse’s expression changed.
Because he had been thinking the same thing.
The bracelet.
The letter.
The face.
The impossible connection.
"You didn’t know."
Delia looked at him.
"What?"
"You really didn’t know."
Her heart started beating faster.
"Know what?"
Jesse looked around.
Too many people.
Too many ears.
"Not here."
She almost laughed.
"Of course not here."
Her voice became sharper.
"Because apparently my fake boyfriend has secret employees, mysterious photographs, and people hunting for him."
"Delia."
"No."
She stepped away.
"I deserve an explanation."
Jesse looked at her.
And something in his expression changed.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Respect.
Because she was afraid.
But she was still standing.
"I’ll explain."
"When?"
"Tonight."
"Where?"
"Somewhere safe."
She looked at him.
"How do I know anywhere with you is safe?"
That question hit harder than she expected.
Because Jesse had no answer.
A few minutes later, they left the ballroom.
The hotel hallway was almost empty.
The music from the dinner faded behind them.
Delia walked beside Jesse, still confused, still angry, but unable to ignore the fact that he had protected her.
"You knew something about me before tonight."
Jesse remained silent.
"Didn’t you?"
After several seconds, he answered.
"Yes."
Her steps stopped.
"You knew me?"
"No."
"Then how?"
Jesse looked at the floor.
"Your name appeared in a file."
Delia stared.
"What file?"
"A file that should have been destroyed years ago."
She felt a chill.
"Why was my name there?"
Jesse stopped walking.
Because the answer was something he had been avoiding.
"Because someone spent years making sure nobody found you."
Delia’s face changed.
"Who?"
Before Jesse could answer, the elevator doors opened.
Inside stood a woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
She looked directly at Jesse.
Then at Delia.
And immediately started crying.
Delia froze.
The woman whispered:
"I knew you would eventually find her."
Jesse stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked at him.
Then at Delia.
"I’m the person who tried to protect her."
Delia’s voice shook.
"Protect me from what?"
The woman reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
With Delia’s name written on it.
Jesse saw it.
And his entire expression changed.
"Where did you get that?"
The woman smiled sadly.
"From the person who told me to wait until she was ready."
Delia took a step closer.
"Who?"
The woman looked directly at Jesse.
And said:
"The person who knows why you were never supposed to meet her."
Jesse reached for the envelope.
But the woman pulled it back.
"No."
She looked at Delia.
"She has to open it herself."
Delia stared at the envelope.
Her name.
Her handwriting?
No.
Impossible.
She had never seen it before.
The woman slowly handed it to her.
Delia touched the paper.
And the moment her fingers closed around it, the lights in the hallway suddenly went out.
Complete darkness.
Someone moved behind them.
Jesse immediately grabbed Delia’s hand.
"Stay behind me."
A phone vibrated somewhere in the dark.
Then a voice came from the end of the hallway.
"Jesse."
He froze.
Because he recognized the voice.
And the person standing there was someone he had buried years ago.
May you like
The elevator doors slowly opened again.
And the woman from the photograph stepped out.
