Chapter 2 - The Man Behind The Fake Name

A man in a black suit stepped through the service entrance and whispered: "Boss, we need to leave now."

Jesse looked at the security badge hanging from the stranger’s neck and noticed a small blood stain on the corner.

Three words were written on the back: "Find her first."

Jesse realized this was never about him.

For a few seconds, Delia forgot how to breathe.

The ballroom that had felt warm and elegant only moments before suddenly felt like a completely different place.

The music was still playing.

The candles were still burning.

People were still laughing at tables across the room.

But Jesse was no longer the charming stranger who had made her mother smile.

He was someone else.

Someone who had recognized danger before anyone else even noticed something was wrong.

"Jesse?"

Her voice came out quieter than she expected.

He did not answer immediately.

His eyes stayed fixed on the service entrance.

The man standing there looked nothing like a hotel employee.

Dark suit.

Perfect posture.

A calm expression that made him more intimidating than someone who was angry.

And then Delia noticed something else.

Everyone around him moved.

Not away.

Around him.

Like they already knew who he was.

Like his presence changed the rules of the room.

Jesse slowly turned back toward her.

"Keep smiling."

Delia stared at him.

"Are you serious?"

"Very."

"Someone just walked in and you look like you’re preparing for a war, and you want me to smile?"

His expression softened slightly.

"Yes."

That answer frightened her more than anything else.

Because Jesse was not pretending anymore.

He was giving instructions.

The kind of instructions someone gave when they were used to being obeyed.

Delia looked toward the service entrance.

"Who is that?"

"No one you need to worry about."

She almost laughed.

"No one?"

Her fingers tightened around his hand.

"Jesse, I hired you from a fake boyfriend agency. I know your favorite food because it was written on a card. I don’t even know if Jesse is your real name."

For the first time that night, he looked guilty.

Not because she was wrong.

Because she was right.

"My name is Jesse."

She studied his face.

"But?"

A pause.

"But it’s not the name everyone knows."

Before Delia could ask another question, Grant appeared beside them.

His confident smile was gone.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered.

Grant looked toward the men gathering near the entrance.

"Is this some kind of security issue?"

Jesse glanced at him.

"Go back to your table."

The way he said it made Grant immediately stop.

Not because he wanted to.

Because something in Jesse’s voice made him realize arguing would be a mistake.

Grant looked confused.

"Who exactly do you think you are?"

Jesse’s expression remained calm.

"Someone you don’t want to challenge tonight."

Delia felt a strange chill.

Because that was not a threat.

It was a fact.

A minute later, the first scream came.

A champagne glass shattered near the center table.

Everyone turned.

A man wearing a waiter’s jacket stood near the far wall.

But Jesse immediately noticed what nobody else did.

The man’s shoes.

Too expensive.

Too clean.

Not a waiter.

Jesse moved instantly.

"Delia."

She looked at him.

"Stay behind me."

"What?"

"Now."

The urgency in his voice made her move.

The next few seconds happened too quickly for her brain to understand.

People stood.

Chairs moved.

Someone shouted.

The lights flickered.

Jesse pulled her behind him.

His body became a shield.

Delia felt his arm around her shoulder as he moved her away from the danger.

She had expected fear.

Instead, she saw something else.

Control.

Absolute control.

The man who had spent the evening pretending to be a normal boyfriend had transformed into someone who looked like he had spent years preparing for moments exactly like this.

Several men in dark suits appeared from different corners of the ballroom.

They moved silently.

Efficiently.

Professionally.

Delia watched as they surrounded the area.

Not guests.

Not hotel security.

Something else.

Something she did not understand.

The stranger in the waiter’s uniform was taken away before anyone could get close.

No chaos.

No shouting.

Just quick decisions.

And Jesse standing there like he had expected it.

Then one of the men approached.

He stopped in front of Jesse.

Lowered his head.

And said:

"Boss."

The entire world seemed to freeze.

Delia looked at Jesse.

Then at the man who had spoken.

Then back at Jesse.

"Boss?"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Jesse did not look away.

"Delia."

"No."

She stepped back.

"No, don’t do that."

"Do what?"

"Say my name like that fixes everything."

The room around them had gone strangely quiet.

Everyone was watching.

Everyone knew something she did not.

"You’re not Jesse from the agency."

He remained silent.

"You’re not a guy who does fake dates for nervous women."

Another pause.

"No."

Delia swallowed.

"Then who are you?"

Jesse looked at the people around them.

At the men waiting for his orders.

At the guests pretending not to listen.

Then back at her.

"I’m someone who made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

"Coming here."

The answer hurt more than she expected.

Because suddenly she wondered if she had been the mistake.

Maybe he had not chosen her.

Maybe he had only been caught in something bigger.

"You knew something would happen tonight."

His silence confirmed it.

Delia’s expression changed.

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"And you still came?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

For the first time, Jesse looked uncertain.

Not afraid.

Not nervous.

Uncertain.

Because the answer mattered.

Finally, he said:

"Because when I saw your name on the appointment list, I thought it was impossible."

Delia frowned.

"What does that mean?"

He looked away.

"I thought someone was using your identity."

Her heart skipped.

"What?"

Before Jesse could answer, one of his men approached quickly.

"Boss."

Jesse turned.

The man lowered his voice.

"We found the person who sent the message."

Jesse’s face changed.

"What message?"

The man looked at Delia.

Then back at him.

"The one that brought us here."

A cold feeling moved through Delia.

"Someone sent you here?"

Nobody answered.

Jesse took the phone from the man.

He looked at the screen.

And for the first time that night…

Delia saw fear.

Not panic.

Not weakness.

Real fear.

"What is it?"

Jesse didn’t respond.

She stepped closer.

"Jesse."

He locked the phone.

"Delia, you need to leave."

"No."

"Listen to me."

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"You don’t get to walk into my life pretending to be someone else and then tell me to disappear when things get complicated."

The room became silent.

The men around them looked shocked.

Not because she yelled.

Because nobody yelled at Jesse.

Nobody spoke to him like that.

But Jesse only stared at her.

And something unexpected happened.

He smiled.

A small, almost invisible smile.

"You really don’t know who I am."

"No."

Delia crossed her arms.

"But I’m starting to think nobody does."

Before he could answer, the phone in his hand vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

One message.

One image.

Jesse opened it.

His face immediately changed.

Delia saw only a glimpse.

A photograph.

An old photograph.

A younger woman.

A child.

And someone standing behind them.

Someone Jesse clearly recognized.

"Who is that?"

Jesse didn’t answer.

"Jesse."

His hand tightened around the phone.

Because the person in the photograph was someone who should not have been alive.

Someone who had disappeared years ago.

Someone who knew exactly who Delia Barnes really was.

Jesse slowly looked toward the hallway leading away from the ballroom.

May you like

And whispered:

"She found you first..."
