Chapter 7 - The Daughter The Serranos Buried

"Because you were born a Serrano."

The words stayed in the darkness.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Mara stood frozen.

The recording had stopped.

The basement was silent again.

But the voice remained.

Her mother's voice.

The voice she had spent years believing was gone forever.

Dominic reached for Mara.

She stepped back.

Not because she didn't want him near.

Because she suddenly didn't know who she was.

"My whole life..."

Her voice shook.

"My whole life I thought I knew my name."

Dominic looked at the photograph on the floor.

The baby.

The bracelet.

The words written behind it.

Not her daughter.

He picked up the photo carefully.

"Mara."

She looked at him.

"We need to find out what this means."

She laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

"What if I don't want to?"

Dominic didn't answer.

Because he understood.

The truth had always been what they were chasing.

But sometimes the truth didn't feel like freedom.

Sometimes it felt like losing everything you had.

Celeste stood near the archive shelves.

Her face was pale.

"I knew there was something."

Dominic turned.

"You knew?"

Celeste looked ashamed.

"I knew there was a secret about Mara."

Mara stared at her.

"How long?"

Celeste hesitated.

"Since before you married Dominic."

The words hurt.

Mara looked away.

"You knew I was connected to the Serranos."

Celeste nodded.

"But I didn't know how."

Dominic stepped forward.

"Explain."

Celeste looked around the basement.

At the documents.

The recordings.

The evidence that someone had spent years hiding.

"Your grandfather kept records of everyone connected to the family."

She pointed toward the shelves.

"Business partners. Enemies. Friends."

Her voice lowered.

"Children."

Mara became still.

"Children?"

Celeste nodded.

"There were rumors."

"About what?"

Celeste looked at Dominic.

"That your grandfather had another child."

The room went silent.

Dominic frowned.

"Another child?"

Celeste nodded.

"Someone he erased from the family records."

Mara looked at the photograph again.

Her mother's face.

Victor Serrano.

The baby.

"What does that have to do with me?"

Celeste didn't answer.

Dominic saw the fear return.

"Celeste."

She finally whispered:

"Your mother was that child."

Mara stopped breathing.

"My mother?"

Celeste nodded.

"She was Victor Serrano's daughter."

The basement seemed to disappear around them.

Mara touched the photograph.

"No."

She shook her head.

"My mother never mentioned the Serranos."

"Because she was trying to protect you."

"From what?"

Celeste looked at Dominic.

"From the family she came from."

Dominic looked at the documents scattered across the table.

Everything was connected.

Mara's father.

His father.

His grandfather.

The hidden archive.

The returned dresses.

All of it.

But one question remained.

"Why did Mara's father hide her identity?"

Celeste looked at the old recording device.

"Because he found out someone wanted to use her."

Mara looked up.

"Use me?"

Celeste nodded.

"Your bloodline."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"What does that mean?"

Celeste walked to another shelf.

She removed a folder.

Inside were legal documents.

Inheritance papers.

Family agreements.

Dominic read the first page.

Then his face changed.

"Mara..."

She looked at him.

"What?"

He handed her the document.

She read it.

Her hands began shaking.

It was a family trust.

Created decades ago.

A hidden trust.

With one condition.

The rightful heir would receive control only after discovering the truth about their identity.

Mara looked confused.

"Why would someone create this?"

Celeste answered.

"Because your grandfather knew someone would try to take it."

Dominic looked at the document.

"Take what?"

Celeste pointed at the final page.

A company name.

A company that had disappeared years ago.

Mara's father's company.

But the document revealed something different.

It had never been destroyed.

It had been transferred.

To someone in the Serrano family.

Dominic read the name.

His face changed.

"Victor Serrano."

His own father.

Mara looked at him.

"Your father owned my father's company?"

Celeste shook her head.

"No."

She looked terrified.

"He controlled it."

Dominic closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

He had spent his entire life inside an empire built on stories.

Not truth.

Stories.

Mara walked toward the shelves.

"Where is my mother now?"

Nobody answered.

That was the question everyone avoided.

Dominic looked at Celeste.

"You know."

She remained silent.

"Celeste."

Her eyes filled.

"I know where she was last seen."

Mara turned.

"Where?"

Celeste slowly reached into her pocket.

She pulled out an old key.

A small metal key.

Similar to the one that opened the archive.

But this one had a different symbol.

A symbol Dominic recognized.

The Serrano family crest.

"What is that?"

Celeste whispered:

"Your mother left it before she disappeared."

Mara stepped closer.

"Why do you have it?"

Celeste looked at her.

"Because she gave it to me."

Mara froze.

"When?"

Celeste looked down.

"The night your father vanished."

Dominic's expression changed.

"You were there?"

Celeste nodded.

"I was seventeen."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

Celeste's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was afraid."

Mara stared at her.

"Afraid of who?"

Celeste looked toward the basement entrance.

"The person who made your mother disappear."

A cold silence followed.

Dominic moved toward the stairs.

"We are going back."

Mara grabbed his arm.

"Where?"

Celeste answered.

"The old Serrano family chapel."

Dominic frowned.

"Why?"

"Because that's where your grandfather kept the final records."

Mara looked confused.

"I thought this was everything."

Celeste shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the archive around them.

"This is what he wanted people to find."

Dominic froze.

"What?"

Celeste's voice dropped.

"There is another archive."

The basement lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

A sound came from above.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Someone was walking through the abandoned house.

Dominic immediately moved in front of Mara.

"Who followed us?"

Nobody answered.

The footsteps stopped.

Right above them.

Then something fell through the basement door.

A small envelope.

Dominic picked it up.

No name.

No address.

Only one sentence.

You are looking for the wrong Serrano.

Mara looked at Dominic.

"What does that mean?"

Before he could answer, the recording device on the table turned on again.

But this time, it wasn't Mara's mother.

It was a man's voice.

A voice Dominic had never heard before.

The voice said:

"Dominic, if you found this, it means your father failed."

Dominic froze.

The recording continued.

"And it means you still don't know who your real enemy is."

The basement door suddenly opened.

A figure stood at the entrance.

Holding an old photograph.

Then the stranger spoke one sentence:

"Hello, Mara. I'm the brother your family told you never existed..."
