Chapter 5 - The Father Who Was Never Gone

The workshop door moved.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Nobody breathed.
Dominic turned toward it.
His hand tightened around the phone that had just carried his father's voice.
A voice that should not exist.
A voice that belonged to a man everyone believed was dead.
Mara stepped closer.
"Dominic..."
He raised one hand.
A warning.
Not because he wanted to protect himself.
Because he wanted to protect her.
The door opened another inch.
The old hinges made a soft sound.
Then stopped.
Someone was standing outside.
Dominic moved forward.
"Who is there?"
No answer.
The silence felt intentional.
Like whoever stood outside wanted them to know they were being watched.
Celeste looked terrified.
Not nervous.
Not uncomfortable.
Terrified.
Dominic noticed immediately.
"You know who this is."
Celeste didn't respond.
"Celeste."
Her lips parted.
But before she could speak, a small envelope slid across the floor.
Nobody moved.
The envelope stopped near Dominic's shoes.
A name was written on it.
MARA VOSS.
Mara went pale.
Because that handwriting was familiar.
She had seen it before.
On letters her father wrote before everything disappeared.
Dominic looked at her.
"You recognize it."
Mara nodded slowly.
"My father."
The door suddenly closed.
Everyone rushed toward it.
Dominic opened it immediately.
The hallway outside was empty.
No footsteps.
No person.
Nothing.
Only the feeling that someone had been there seconds before.
He returned to the room.
Mara was staring at the envelope.
"Open it."
She looked at him.
"What if it changes everything?"
Dominic answered quietly.
"Everything already changed."
Mara took the envelope.
Her hands were shaking.
Inside was a single photograph.
An old photograph.
Dominic looked at it.
It showed three people standing outside a building.
Mara's father.
Victor Serrano.
And a third person.
A woman.
Dominic recognized her instantly.
His mother.
His breath stopped.
"My mother?"
Mara looked at him.
"She was there."
Dominic took the photo.
He examined every detail.
The building behind them.
The date written in the corner.
The expressions on their faces.
They were not strangers.
They looked like people who knew each other well.
His entire understanding of his family began falling apart.
"My parents knew your father."
Mara nodded.
"Yes."
"But you said my family destroyed yours."
"I said someone in your family did."
Dominic looked at her.
"What are you saying?"
Mara touched the photograph.
"I'm saying not everyone in your family wanted my father gone."
Celeste finally spoke.
"Your mother tried to stop it."
Both of them looked at her.
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Celeste looked exhausted.
Like she had carried the secret for years.
"Your mother found out what Victor was planning."
Dominic froze.
"My father?"
Celeste nodded.
"No."
She looked at the photograph.
"Your grandfather."
The words created another silence.
Dominic slowly sat down.
For years, his family history had been simple.
A powerful family.
A successful business.
A respected name.
But behind every achievement was something hidden.
Something buried.
"What did my grandfather do?"
Celeste looked at Mara.
Then at Dominic.
"He built the Serrano empire."
She paused.
"But he built it by taking things from people who couldn't fight back."
Dominic looked away.
The answer was painful.
But somehow, it made sense.
Power always had a price.
He just never knew who paid it.
Mara sat beside him.
"My father discovered financial records."
"What kind of records?"
"Payments."
"To who?"
Mara looked at Celeste.
Celeste answered.
"People who helped make competitors disappear."
Dominic's face hardened.
"You mean sabotage."
Celeste nodded.
"Yes."
The room became colder.
Dominic stood.
"Where is my father?"
Nobody answered.
He looked at Celeste.
"You said he never died."
She swallowed.
"I didn't know he was alive."
"But you knew something."
Celeste looked down.
"I knew he disappeared."
"Why?"
"Because he found the truth."
Dominic walked toward the table.
"And my mother?"
Celeste's eyes filled slightly.
"She helped him."
Mara looked surprised.
"Your mother helped him escape."
Dominic shook his head.
"Then why did everyone say he died?"
Celeste whispered:
"Because someone needed the world to believe that."
"Who?"
Celeste didn't answer.
Dominic slammed his hand against the table.
"Who?"
Her voice was barely audible.
"Your uncle."
Dominic froze.
"My uncle?"
"Adrian Serrano."
The name felt unfamiliar.
Because Dominic had never heard it spoken in his home.
Not once.
"Who is Adrian?"
Celeste looked at him.
"The person your family erased."
Dominic stared.
"What does that mean?"
Celeste took a deep breath.
"Your father wasn't the only person who disappeared."
She walked toward a cabinet in the workshop.
Mara watched her carefully.
"What are you doing?"
Celeste didn't answer.
She opened the cabinet.
Behind a row of fabric samples was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small black box.
Dominic immediately recognized it.
"It belongs to my father."
Celeste nodded.
"He left it for you."
"Why didn't you give it to me?"
Her eyes filled with guilt.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of who?"
Celeste looked toward the locked door.
"Of the same person who has been watching Mara."
Dominic opened the box.
Inside were documents.
A small key.
And a handwritten letter.
The letter had only one sentence on the front.
For Dominic. When you finally stop protecting them.
His fingers tightened.
He opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
His father's.
Dominic,
If you are reading this, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth.
Do not trust anyone who tells you your family was innocent.
The people closest to you know more than they admit.
And the woman you married...
Dominic stopped.
Mara looked at him.
"What?"
He continued reading.
And his face changed.
"What does it say?"
Dominic slowly lowered the letter.
His voice was quiet.
"My father knew about you before we met."
Mara froze.
"What?"
"He wrote your name."
She stepped closer.
"Why?"
Dominic looked at the paper again.
There was one final line.
A warning.
A sentence that made his blood turn cold.
Mara was never chosen by accident. She was sent to you because someone knew you would protect her.
Nobody spoke.
Mara looked confused.
"That's impossible."
Dominic looked at her.
"Who would send you?"
Before she could answer, the small key inside the box moved.
There was something attached to it.
A tiny metal tag.
With an address engraved on it.
Dominic picked it up.
Then his phone vibrated.
Another unknown message.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Mara.
Standing outside the same building from the old photograph.
Taken just minutes earlier.
Dominic looked at the screen.
Because behind Mara in the picture...
Someone was standing in the shadows.
Someone who should have been impossible to see.
The message below the photo appeared:
"Ask your wife why she went there alone."
Dominic looked up.
May you like
Mara was already reaching for the workshop door.
And when she opened it, someone on the other side whispered her name...
