Chapter 6 - The Daughter Hidden From The Serrano Family

The voice behind the workshop door whispered one word.
"Mara."
She froze.
Not because someone had called her name.
Because she recognized the voice.
Dominic saw it immediately.
The way her face changed.
The way all the color disappeared.
The way her hand moved toward the old photograph on the table.
"Who is that?"
Mara didn't answer.
The door remained open only a few inches.
A shadow stood outside.
Waiting.
Dominic moved closer.
"Stay behind me."
Mara grabbed his arm.
"No."
He looked at her.
The fear in her eyes was different this time.
It wasn't fear of danger.
It was fear of a memory.
"Dominic..."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"That voice..."
The person outside spoke again.
"You finally found out."
Mara stepped back.
The words hit her harder than anything else.
Because she knew that voice.
She had spent years trying to forget it.
Dominic reached for the door handle.
But before he touched it, the person outside walked away.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Then disappeared.
Dominic opened the door.
The corridor was empty.
No one.
Nothing.
Only a small envelope placed on the floor.
Another envelope.
Another secret.
He picked it up.
This time, the name written on it was different.
FOR MARA.
Mara stared at it.
"I don't want to open it."
Dominic looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because every time someone gives me the truth, it takes something away."
The sentence stayed between them.
Dominic understood.
For months, Mara had not been hiding because she wanted secrets.
She had been hiding because every secret she uncovered destroyed another piece of the life she thought she knew.
He handed her the envelope.
"Then we open it together."
Mara looked at him.
A small expression crossed her face.
Almost disbelief.
"You still trust me?"
Dominic frowned.
"Why wouldn't I?"
"Because everyone else always believed I was hiding something."
He stepped closer.
"Everyone else was wrong."
For the first time that night, Mara looked like she wanted to believe him.
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Not old.
Not damaged.
Recent.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
She read the first line.
Then stopped.
"What?"
Dominic asked.
Mara handed it to him.
The letter contained only a few sentences.
Mara,
If you are reading this, it means Dominic finally knows.
I am sorry I couldn't protect you longer.
But you need to tell him the truth before they tell him their version.
Dominic looked at Mara.
"Who wrote this?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
The next line made both of them freeze.
Your father did not disappear because of the Serranos.
Dominic continued reading.
He disappeared because he discovered what happened to your mother.
Mara's breathing stopped.
"My mother?"
She looked at the letter.
"No."
Dominic noticed.
"You didn't know?"
She shook her head slowly.
"My mother died when I was young."
The letter said otherwise.
She was never dead.
Mara stepped back.
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"No, that's impossible."
Dominic grabbed the letter.
"Who told you she died?"
"My father."
The answer came instantly.
Then silence followed.
Because everyone knew what that meant.
The person who raised Mara had been hiding something too.
Dominic looked at Celeste.
His sister had been quiet the entire time.
"Did you know?"
Celeste looked away.
That was enough.
Dominic's expression changed.
"You knew."
Celeste whispered:
"Not everything."
"But something."
She nodded.
Mara stared at her.
"How long?"
Celeste closed her eyes.
"Years."
The betrayal on Mara's face was impossible to hide.
"You knew my mother was alive?"
Celeste shook her head.
"No."
"Then what did you know?"
Celeste looked at the floor.
"That your father didn't leave you."
Mara became still.
"What?"
"He tried to come back."
Dominic stepped forward.
"When?"
"After the night he disappeared."
Mara's voice became smaller.
"He came back?"
Celeste nodded.
"But someone stopped him."
"Who?"
Celeste looked at Dominic.
And he already knew he wouldn't like the answer.
"Your grandfather."
Dominic looked away.
The pattern was becoming clearer.
The Serrano family had spent years controlling what people knew.
Who disappeared.
Who survived.
Who was allowed to speak.
Mara sat down slowly.
"My whole life..."
She looked at the photograph.
"I thought my father abandoned me."
Her voice broke.
"But he was trying to come home."
Dominic sat beside her.
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
"For what?"
"For not knowing."
Mara shook her head.
"You couldn't have known."
"But I should have looked."
Those words mattered.
Because Dominic was finally accepting something he had avoided.
His ignorance had not protected anyone.
It had allowed things to continue.
A sound came from the hallway.
Both of them turned.
This time, Dominic was ready.
He walked toward the door.
The same door.
The same place where the mysterious person had stood.
But there was no one.
Only a small object on the floor.
A key.
Attached to it was a metal tag.
Dominic picked it up.
The engraving was simple.
SERRANO PRIVATE ARCHIVE
Mara looked confused.
"I've never seen that."
Celeste immediately reacted.
"Where did you get that?"
Dominic turned.
Her fear returned.
"Celeste."
She didn't answer.
"Where is the archive?"
Silence.
"Celeste."
Finally, she whispered:
"Under the old Serrano estate."
Dominic stared.
"The house my grandfather sold?"
Celeste nodded.
"The house that was supposedly empty for twenty years."
Mara looked at the key.
"Why would someone send us there?"
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was obvious.
Someone wanted them to find something.
Something hidden.
Something dangerous.
Dominic picked up his coat.
"We're going."
Mara stood.
"I need to know."
Celeste shook her head.
"No."
Dominic looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because if that key exists..."
She swallowed.
"It means someone opened the archive recently."
Dominic stared.
"Someone?"
Celeste nodded.
"Someone who shouldn't have been able to."
The drive to the old Serrano estate took less than an hour.
But it felt longer.
Nobody spoke.
Mara sat beside Dominic, holding the photograph.
The woman beside her father.
Dominic's mother.
Two families connected by a secret neither understood.
When they arrived, the house looked abandoned.
Exactly as Celeste described.
No lights.
No movement.
No signs anyone had been there.
Dominic unlocked the front door.
It opened immediately.
Too easily.
He looked at Celeste.
"You said this place was locked."
"It was."
Mara looked inside.
Darkness.
Dust.
Silence.
They entered slowly.
The old house smelled like forgotten memories.
Every room was untouched.
Until they reached the basement door.
A small metal lock hung from it.
Dominic inserted the key.
It turned.
The lock opened.
Inside was a hidden archive.
Documents.
Photos.
Old recordings.
Everything the Serrano family had buried.
Mara picked up the first photograph.
Her hands began shaking.
It showed her mother.
Standing beside Victor Serrano.
And holding a baby.
Dominic looked closer.
The baby had a small bracelet.
A bracelet Mara recognized.
Because she had worn the same one as a child.
Then they saw the writing on the back.
Three words.
Three words that changed everything.
"Not her daughter."
Mara dropped the photo.
Dominic looked around the room.
Because somewhere inside the archive...
Someone was still there.
And then the old recording device on the desk suddenly turned on by itself.
A woman's voice filled the basement.
"Mara..."
She froze.
Because the voice was her mother's.
The recording continued.
"If you are hearing this, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth."
Dominic looked at Mara.
The woman's voice became quieter.
"And it means you finally know..."
A pause.
Then the words that made Mara step backward.
"You were never supposed to be raised as Elias Voss's daughter..."
The basement lights went out.
May you like
And in the darkness, someone behind them whispered...
"Because you were born a Serrano."
