Chapter 6 - The Daughter My Father Tried To Protect

The voice behind me whispered my name.

"Emily."

I turned slowly.

My heart stopped.

Standing in the doorway of my father's study was Daniel.

But he wasn't alone.

A man stood beside him.

Older.

Gray hair.

A face I had never seen before.

Yet somehow, I recognized him.

Not from memories.

From photographs.

The man in my father's old documents.

The man whose name appeared on the birth records hidden in the metal case.

My hands tightened around the papers.

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time, there was no arrogance.

No smile.

No confidence.

Only desperation.

"Emily, listen to me."

I stepped back.

"Don't come closer."

He stopped.

The man beside him looked at me carefully.

Then he said something that made my entire body freeze.

"You have your mother's eyes."

My breath caught.

My mother.

A word that carried years of pain.

Because my mother died when I was young.

At least, that's what I had always been told.

I looked at Alexander.

But he wasn't looking at me.

He was looking at the older man.

Like he knew him.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

"Robert."

The older man nodded.

"Alexander."

The room became silent.

Too many secrets.

Too many people who knew things about my life before I did.

I looked between them.

"Someone needs to explain."

My voice shook.

"Right now."

Nobody answered immediately.

And that made me angry.

Because everyone kept protecting me from the truth.

But the truth had already destroyed my life.

I deserved to know why.

Daniel finally spoke.

"Emily, I never wanted it to happen this way."

I looked at him.

"Never wanted what?"

He swallowed.

"The divorce."

I almost laughed.

"The divorce?"

I held up the papers.

"You tried to take my home."

"You tried to take my money."

"You tried to make me believe I had nothing."

His face changed.

"I was trying to protect you."

The words were almost insulting.

"Protect me?"

I stepped closer.

"You told me I would never survive without you."

Daniel looked down.

And for the first time, I saw regret.

"I was wrong."

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"You were exactly who you wanted to be."

The silence after those words was heavy.

Then Robert spoke.

"Daniel was never supposed to marry you."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He walked slowly into the room.

"Your father knew Daniel was dangerous."

Daniel immediately turned.

"That's not true."

Robert ignored him.

"Your father discovered that Daniel had been searching for your family records long before he met you."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

Robert looked at the hidden documents.

"Because Daniel believed your father stole something from his family."

Alexander finally spoke.

"Not stole."

He looked at Daniel.

"Protected."

I looked at Daniel.

"What was it?"

Nobody answered.

Then Robert reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

The paper was worn.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father's handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

"Where did you get that?"

Robert looked at me.

"Your father gave it to me the night before he died."

The room went silent.

"The night before he died?"

I looked at Alexander.

"You said you were there."

Alexander nodded.

"I was."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because your father made me promise."

I stared at him.

"Promise what?"

Alexander looked at the letter.

"That I would only reveal the truth when Daniel tried to take control of your life."

I felt a chill.

Because that moment had arrived.

The divorce.

The lawsuit.

The attempt to take everything.

My father knew this would happen.

Years before it did.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting filled the page.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then Daniel has finally shown you who he really is.

I stopped.

My eyes blurred.

The letter continued.

I wanted to protect you from a truth that would hurt you.

But hiding the truth forever would hurt you more.

Daniel's family destroyed something important to mine.

But your husband was not the only person involved.

Someone you trust helped him.

I looked up.

Someone I trust.

The words repeated in my mind.

Who?

My eyes moved down the page.

The next sentence made my hands go cold.

The person who helped Daniel was the same person who helped me hide your real identity.

I stopped reading.

My real identity.

Those words felt impossible.

I looked at Robert.

"What does this mean?"

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked away.

Like he already knew.

I turned toward him.

"You knew."

He didn't deny it.

"You knew something about me."

His silence was enough.

My voice broke.

"Did you ever love me?"

Daniel looked at me.

For a moment, he looked like the man I married.

The man who held my hand.

The man who promised forever.

Then he said quietly:

"At first, yes."

My heart shattered.

"At first?"

He closed his eyes.

"I was supposed to get close to you."

The room felt like it disappeared.

I stared at him.

"Why?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Because your father left something behind."

I whispered:

"What?"

He looked at me.

"The one thing everyone has been searching for."

Alexander stepped forward.

"Daniel."

But Daniel continued.

"The reason your father built the trust."

I held my breath.

"The reason he hid your identity."

My fingers tightened around the letter.

"What is it?"

Daniel looked toward the hidden chamber.

Then back at me.

"Your mother didn't die the way you were told."

The world stopped.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

My mother.

Dead.

The one truth I had carried my entire life.

Now Daniel was saying it was a lie.

Alexander's face changed.

"Daniel, don't."

But it was too late.

Because Daniel had already revealed the secret.

"My mother knew where she was."

I stared at him.

"Where she was?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your mother is alive."

Nobody spoke.

The room became completely silent.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

Only three words.

"She's waiting outside."

I looked toward the hallway.

The old wooden door at the end of the corridor slowly moved.

Someone was standing on the other side.

And then the door opened.
