Chapter 2 - The Stranger Who Knew My Secret

The courtroom doors opened slowly.

Everyone turned.

Including Daniel.

For the first time that morning, his confident expression disappeared.

A man walked inside.

He was older.

Late fifties.

Silver hair.

A dark expensive suit.

He didn't rush.

He didn't look nervous.

He walked like someone who had spent his entire life entering rooms where people waited for his decisions.

The judge immediately stood straighter.

The attorneys stopped whispering.

Even Daniel's lawyer looked uncomfortable.

I had never seen that man before.

But Daniel had.

And the moment their eyes met, I saw something I had never seen on my husband's face.

Fear.

The man stopped near the center of the courtroom.

"Judge Anderson," he said calmly.

The judge looked surprised.

"Mr. Alexander Cross."

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

I looked around.

People knew him.

But I didn't understand why.

Daniel leaned toward his attorney.

"What is he doing here?"

His voice was low.

But I heard it.

The confidence was gone.

The man opened a leather folder and placed it on the table.

"I believe the court may want to review some information before making any final decisions regarding Mrs. Whitmore."

The judge frowned.

"This hearing was nearly concluded."

"I understand," Alexander said.

"However, some evidence was intentionally withheld."

The courtroom became silent.

My heart started beating faster.

Evidence?

What evidence?

Daniel looked at me.

For a brief second, I saw anger in his eyes.

Not because Alexander was there.

Because Daniel knew something was about to be revealed.

The judge motioned toward the table.

"Mr. Cross, explain yourself."

Alexander opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Many documents.

Property records.

Financial reports.

Legal agreements.

But then he pulled out one more piece of paper.

A single page.

He placed it in front of the judge.

"I believe this changes everything."

Daniel stood.

"Your Honor, this is completely inappropriate."

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. Whitmore, sit down."

Daniel slowly sat.

But his eyes never left Alexander.

I watched the man who had spent months making me feel powerless suddenly become afraid.

And I realized something.

Daniel wasn't surprised that Alexander came.

He was surprised that Alexander came today.

The judge read the document silently.

Her expression changed.

"What is this?"

Alexander answered.

"This is a private agreement signed eight months ago."

I froze.

Eight months ago.

The same time I discovered I was pregnant.

The same time Daniel started changing.

The same time my husband stopped coming home early.

The same time he began telling me I was becoming a burden.

The judge looked at Daniel.

"Mr. Whitmore, did you sign this document?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation said everything.

"Answer the question."

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

A cold feeling moved through my body.

What had he signed?

Alexander looked at me.

For the first time, his expression softened.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I apologize that you were forced to discover this in this way."

I stared at him.

"Who are you?"

The entire courtroom became quiet.

Alexander looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

"My name is Alexander Cross."

He paused.

"And I was your father's attorney."

I stopped breathing.

My father.

The words felt strange.

Because my father had been gone for years.

I had spent most of my adult life believing I had no one powerful enough to stand beside me.

No family name.

No influence.

No protection.

Daniel knew that.

That was why he chose me.

Or at least, that's what I believed.

Alexander continued.

"Before your father passed away, he created a trust specifically designed to protect you and your child."

My eyes widened.

"My father never told me about any trust."

"Because he believed someone close to you would try to take advantage of you if they knew."

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

And for the first time, I saw him clearly.

Not as my husband.

Not as the man I loved.

But as someone who had been hiding something.

Daniel suddenly laughed.

A forced laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

He stood.

"She has no idea what she's talking about. My wife has been under emotional stress because of the pregnancy."

My stomach turned.

There it was.

The same trick.

Make me look unstable.

Make everyone question me.

But Alexander didn't react.

He simply removed another document.

"This is the medical report from Mrs. Whitmore's pregnancy."

Daniel's face changed.

"What?"

Alexander placed it down.

"Along with the communication records showing that Mr. Whitmore attempted to pressure his wife into signing away her rights."

I looked at Daniel.

My voice came out quietly.

"You knew."

Daniel looked away.

"You knew about my father's trust."

He didn't answer.

The silence was enough.

Memories started returning.

The strange questions.

The sudden interest in my father's old documents.

The way Daniel always asked if I had access to family accounts.

The way he became nervous whenever I mentioned my father's lawyer.

I thought he loved me.

But he had been searching for something.

Something that belonged to me.

The judge continued reviewing the documents.

"Mr. Cross, are you stating that Mr. Whitmore intentionally concealed these assets during divorce proceedings?"

"Yes."

"And you have proof?"

Alexander nodded.

"I do."

He reached into the folder.

This time, he removed a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

My handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

But I didn't remember writing it.

My hands became cold.

Alexander placed it in front of me.

"This was found inside your father's safety deposit box."

I stared at the envelope.

"Why is my name on it?"

Alexander looked at me carefully.

"Because your father left it there for the day you discovered the truth about your marriage."

My heart stopped.

The courtroom disappeared.

There was only that envelope.

That name.

That impossible question.

What truth had my father known?

I slowly opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only a few lines.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then I read the final sentence.

"Never trust Daniel Whitmore with anything that belongs to you."

My hands started shaking.

Daniel saw the letter.

And for the first time since I had known him...

he looked terrified.

The judge ordered everyone to remain seated while she reviewed the new evidence.

But Daniel was no longer looking at the judge.

He was looking at the courtroom doors.

Like he was waiting for someone.

Like he knew someone else was coming.

Alexander noticed.

"Who are you expecting, Daniel?"

Daniel said nothing.

The courtroom doors behind him slowly opened.

May you like

A woman stepped inside.

And Daniel whispered a name I never expected to hear.
