Chapter 5 - The Secret Room My Father Never Wanted Me To Find

The image on Alexander's phone stayed frozen in my mind.

Daniel standing inside my father's study.

The room he was never supposed to enter.

The room my father had locked before he died.

And behind him...

Someone else.

Someone I thought was gone forever.

I stared at the screen.

"Who is that?"

Nobody answered.

Alexander took the phone back.

"We need to get there."

My heart was pounding.

"Get where?"

"Your father's house."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

Rachel stood beside the table, her face pale.

"Because if Daniel found the study, he already knows what your father was protecting."

I grabbed my coat.

My hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From anger.

For months, I had believed Daniel was leaving me because he stopped loving me.

I believed I wasn't enough.

I believed maybe I had failed as a wife.

But the truth was much worse.

My husband had been planning something from the beginning.

And I was done waiting for him to explain.

The drive to my father's house felt endless.

Nobody spoke.

The city moved outside the window, but I barely noticed.

My thoughts were trapped in memories.

My father teaching me how to ride a bicycle.

My father sitting beside me when I got my first heartbreak.

My father telling me one thing before he passed away.

"Always trust your instincts, even when everyone tells you you're wrong."

At the time, I thought he was talking about life.

Now I wondered if he was warning me.

When we finally arrived, the front gate was open.

That was the first thing I noticed.

My father's house had always been carefully protected.

After his death, I kept security cameras around the property.

Nobody entered without permission.

Nobody.

Alexander noticed it too.

"Someone disabled the system."

Rachel looked toward the house.

"Daniel."

We walked inside.

The front door wasn't locked.

My stomach tightened.

Because Daniel wasn't breaking into a random house.

He knew exactly where he was going.

The hallway looked untouched.

The furniture.

The paintings.

Everything remained exactly as my father left it.

Except one thing.

A picture frame on the table was broken.

I walked closer.

It was a family photo.

My father.

My mother.

Me as a child.

I picked it up.

The glass was cracked directly across my face.

Rachel noticed.

"That's not an accident."

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Someone wanted to damage your image."

A strange feeling moved through me.

Daniel had always said I was too emotional.

Too sensitive.

Too dependent.

But now I wondered.

Was he trying to make me believe that?

Was he trying to make me doubt myself?

Alexander walked toward the hallway.

"The study is upstairs."

We followed him.

Every step felt heavier.

When we reached the door, I stopped.

The door was closed.

Just like I remembered.

A dark wooden door with a small gold handle.

My father always kept it locked.

Even when I was young.

I once asked him why.

He smiled.

"Because some doors should only be opened when you're ready."

I never understood what he meant.

Until now.

Alexander examined the lock.

"It has been forced."

Rachel looked worried.

"Daniel opened it."

Alexander nodded.

I reached for the handle.

Then stopped.

A thousand thoughts rushed through my mind.

What if I wasn't ready?

What if everything I discovered destroyed the last good memories I had?

But then I remembered Daniel's smile in court.

"You'll never survive without me."

I opened the door.

Inside was darkness.

The room smelled like old paper and wood.

Nothing looked disturbed.

At first.

Then I saw it.

The bookshelf.

One section had been moved.

Behind it was a hidden space.

My heart started racing.

"My father built this?"

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

"How do you know?"

He looked away.

"I helped him."

That answer surprised me.

"You knew about this room?"

"I knew there was a room."

He paused.

"But your father never told me what was inside."

We moved closer.

Behind the bookshelf was a small hidden chamber.

Inside were boxes.

Documents.

Old photographs.

A locked metal case.

And one thing that immediately caught my attention.

A folder with my name.

My fingers touched the label.

"Why is my name on everything?"

Alexander looked at me.

"Because your father prepared this for you."

I opened the folder.

Inside were letters.

Medical records.

Old legal documents.

But then I saw something that made me stop.

A birth certificate.

My birth certificate.

I looked at it.

Everything seemed normal.

Until I noticed the name.

The father's name.

My eyes widened.

Because it wasn't my father's name.

I looked at Alexander.

"What is this?"

Nobody spoke.

Rachel looked away.

Like she had been expecting this moment.

I held the paper tighter.

"This isn't possible."

Alexander took a breath.

"There are things your father never told you."

I looked at him.

"Who is my real father?"

The question hung in the room.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

A man's voice came through.

"Don't trust Alexander Cross."

I froze.

The voice continued.

"He knows why your father hid the truth."

I looked at Alexander.

He was watching me.

The caller whispered:

"Ask him what happened the night your father died."

The call ended.

The room became silent.

Alexander's expression changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Pain.

I lowered the phone.

"What happened that night?"

He didn't answer.

"Alexander."

His eyes moved toward the hidden room.

Then toward the old documents.

"I was there."

My breath stopped.

"You were there?"

He nodded slowly.

"The night your father died..."

He looked at me.

"I wasn't trying to save him."

A cold feeling moved through my body.

"What are you saying?"

Before Alexander could answer, a sound came from behind us.

A quiet movement.

From inside the hidden chamber.

We all turned.

The metal case on the floor was open.

But nobody had opened it.

Inside was a small video recorder.

And the screen was already playing.

My father's face appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Looking directly into the camera.

And the first words he said were:

"If you are watching this, it means Daniel found the room..."

May you like

Then the video stopped.

Because someone behind us whispered my name.
