Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind The Photograph

I stared at the photo on my phone.

Daniel.

Standing beside David.

The night my father disappeared.

For several seconds, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.

Because there were only two possibilities.

Either Daniel had been lying to me.

Or someone wanted me to believe he was.

And after everything I had learned, I knew one thing.

Trusting the wrong person was the reason I was standing in a bank holding pieces of a life that had been stolen from me.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel was watching my face.

He already knew.

"You saw it."

His voice was quiet.

Not surprised.

That was what scared me.

"You were there."

Daniel looked away.

"Eleanor..."

"No."

My voice shook.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was angry.

"You stood beside David the night my father disappeared."

Daniel closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.

Then he said the words I never expected.

"Yes."

The room felt silent.

Even the sounds outside disappeared.

I stepped back.

"How long?"

Daniel looked at me.

"I was there when your father found the evidence."

"You were helping him?"

"Yes."

"Then why were you with David?"

His jaw tightened.

"Because I was trying to stop him."

I laughed once.

A painful, empty laugh.

"Everyone says that."

I held up the phone.

"Everyone has a reason."

Daniel didn't argue.

Maybe because he knew he had no right.

"My father trusted you."

Those words changed his expression.

Because they were true.

Daniel looked down.

"He did."

"Then tell me what happened."

He stayed silent.

I waited.

Finally, he spoke.

"Your father discovered David wasn't just hiding money."

I crossed my arms.

"I know."

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"You know about the accounts. The companies. The people involved."

He looked directly at me.

"But you don't know why your father disappeared."

I didn't say anything.

"Your father found proof that David was planning something bigger."

"What?"

"Control."

I frowned.

"Control of what?"

Daniel looked at the documents.

"Everything."

I stared at him.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does when you understand David."

Daniel picked up the photograph.

"David never cared about money."

I looked at him.

"He spent thousands on Claire."

"That's not the point."

Daniel placed the photo down.

"Money was just a tool."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What was he trying to control?"

Daniel took a breath.

"People."

The answer sounded impossible.

But after everything I had seen, impossible was becoming normal.

"He built relationships with powerful people. He collected information. He made himself useful."

Daniel paused.

"And when people became a problem..."

He didn't finish.

He didn't need to.

I looked at the picture again.

My father.

David.

Daniel.

A moment frozen in time.

"Why did you let me believe my father abandoned me?"

Daniel looked devastated.

"I didn't."

I stared at him.

"Then who did?"

Before he answered, my phone rang again.

The same unknown number.

I answered immediately.

"Who are you?"

Silence.

Then the woman's voice returned.

"I told you not to trust him."

I looked at Daniel.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"Someone who tried to warn your father."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Claire?"

"No."

The woman sounded almost hurt.

"Claire was never the person you needed to fear."

My heart stopped.

"Then who?"

The line went silent.

Then the woman said:

"Look at the documents again."

The call ended.

I immediately opened the folder.

The list of names.

The names my father had collected.

I scanned through them.

Then I noticed something.

A name had been circled.

Not David.

Not Claire.

Someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone I knew.

My fingers went cold.

Daniel noticed my expression.

"What is it?"

I didn't answer.

Because the name on the page was impossible.

It belonged to someone who had been protecting me my entire life.

Someone who had always told me they loved me.

Someone who had cried with me when my father disappeared.

My mother.

I looked at Daniel.

"My father was investigating my mother."

Daniel's face changed.

"No."

"You knew?"

He immediately shook his head.

"No."

But his reaction wasn't confusion.

It was fear.

And that told me something.

There were still secrets.

More secrets.

I took the documents.

"We're leaving."

Daniel looked at me.

"Where?"

"To my mother's house."

He stepped forward.

"Eleanor, wait."

I stopped.

"Why?"

His voice became serious.

"Because if your father circled her name, there is a reason."

I looked at him.

"And if everyone has been lying to me, I want to know why."

My mother's house looked exactly the same.

That was the worst part.

The same flowers near the entrance.

The same curtains.

The same wooden chair where she sat every Sunday afternoon.

A place that had always felt safe.

Now it felt like another secret waiting to be opened.

Daniel stayed in the car.

I walked to the door alone.

I didn't know why.

Maybe because some truths needed to be faced alone.

I knocked.

No answer.

I knocked again.

"Mom?"

Nothing.

I tried the handle.

The door opened.

Unlocked.

My heart started beating faster.

"Mom?"

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked inside.

The living room was empty.

But something was different.

A drawer near the television was open.

Papers were scattered across the floor.

Someone had been searching.

I moved closer.

Then I saw it.

A photo.

My father.

My mother.

And David.

All together.

But the date on the back made my blood freeze.

It was taken two years after my father supposedly disappeared.

I dropped the photo.

Impossible.

My father was alive after that night.

I grabbed the picture again.

There was writing on the back.

Only one sentence.

"He came back because he knew the truth."

My phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

"Leave now."

I looked toward the window.

"Why?"

Another message appeared.

"He wasn't the only one watching your mother's house."

I froze.

Then I heard footsteps upstairs.

Slow.

Heavy.

Someone was inside.

I looked toward the staircase.

"Mom?"

No answer.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came from above.

"Eleanor."

My entire body went cold.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it every day growing up.

The person who raised me.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

My mother.

I walked toward the stairs.

"Mom?"

The door at the top of the stairs slowly opened.

But my mother wasn't standing there.

Someone else was.

Someone holding a folder with my name on it.

May you like

And the person whispered:

"I've been waiting for you to find out the truth about your father."
