Chapter 4 - The Man Who Knew My Father

The lights went out.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The darkness inside David's office felt heavier than it should have.

I could hear my own breathing.

I could hear Margaret whispering something beside me.

And I could hear someone moving in the hallway.

Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.

"Who is outside?"

My voice came out lower than I expected.

Daniel didn't answer.

He was standing near the doorway, looking toward the darkness.

The confidence he had shown moments earlier disappeared.

Now he looked worried.

Not afraid.

Worried.

That scared me more.

Because Daniel looked like someone who knew exactly what kind of danger was coming.

Margaret grabbed my hand.

"Eleanor, you need to hide the letter."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

She didn't answer.

Then the hallway lights suddenly turned back on.

The office door was still open.

But nobody was there.

I looked at Daniel.

"Who was that?"

He slowly closed the door.

Then he locked it.

Only after that did he finally speak.

"Someone who works for David."

My stomach tightened.

"David has people watching me?"

Daniel looked at the photograph on the desk.

"David has always had people watching everyone."

I stared at him.

"Who are you?"

This time, he didn't avoid the question.

"My name is Daniel Carter."

The name meant nothing to me.

But Margaret reacted immediately.

She looked at him like she had seen a ghost.

"You're alive."

Daniel looked at her.

"That's what David wanted everyone to believe."

The room became silent.

I looked between them.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel took a deep breath.

Then he sat down.

"Your father and I worked together."

I held the letter tighter.

"On what?"

"On exposing David."

The words landed like a punch.

I shook my head.

"No."

Daniel looked at me.

"You think you know your husband."

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't.

Not anymore.

"He built his entire life around appearing successful," Daniel continued. "The expensive cars. The companies. The connections. The image."

He pointed toward the photograph.

"But your father discovered something underneath all of it."

"What?"

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Then back at me.

"David wasn't just hiding an affair."

My heart sank.

"He was moving money."

I frowned.

"Money?"

"Millions."

I felt my fingers go numb.

"No."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Your father found accounts hidden under different names. Companies that existed only on paper. Money transferred through fake investments."

I looked at the documents on David's desk.

The apartment.

The gifts.

The diamond.

Suddenly, everything looked different.

The affair wasn't the beginning.

It was only another piece.

"He wasn't building a new life with Claire," Daniel said.

"He was protecting everything he stole."

I looked at the photo again.

My father.

Daniel.

David.

Three men connected by something I never knew existed.

"Why did my father disappear?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation told me everything.

"Because he found proof."

"What proof?"

"The original records."

I stepped closer.

"Where are they?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father hid them before David could find them."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying they don't know."

Daniel didn't react.

Because he understood.

For years, I had been given pieces of a story but never the truth.

My entire life had been built around missing information.

First my father.

Now my husband.

Margaret looked at me.

"Eleanor..."

I turned toward her.

"How long have you known?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"About David?"

I nodded.

She looked down.

"Years."

The answer hurt.

Even though I expected it.

"Years?"

"I knew he was involved in something dangerous."

"And you said nothing?"

"I was scared."

I looked at her.

"You let me marry him."

She closed her eyes.

"I tried to stop it."

I froze.

"What?"

"Your father tried to warn you."

My breathing stopped.

"What are you talking about?"

Margaret walked toward the desk.

She picked up the old photograph.

"Before he disappeared, your father tried to contact you."

I stared at her.

"No."

"Yes."

"Why don't I remember?"

"Because David made sure you never received the message."

The room felt like it was spinning.

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

"How?"

Margaret looked at Daniel.

Daniel answered.

"He intercepted it."

I looked at him.

"David?"

Daniel nodded.

"He knew your father was trying to protect you."

I thought about every moment of my life after my father's disappearance.

Every unanswered question.

Every birthday without him.

Every time my mother cried quietly when she thought I wasn't watching.

And David had known.

My husband had known.

I suddenly remembered something.

A small detail I had ignored for years.

The week my father disappeared, David had appeared in my life.

Not as my boyfriend.

Not yet.

Just a friend.

Someone who helped me through the hardest moment of my life.

The person who comforted me.

The person who told me my father probably left because he was afraid.

The person who convinced me to stop searching.

My entire body went cold.

"He found me because of my father."

Daniel looked at me.

"Yes."

I covered my mouth.

The man I thought saved me...

was the person who helped bury the truth.

My phone vibrated.

I looked down.

Another message from David.

This time, there was a picture attached.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

It was a photo of me.

Taken inside my own house.

From earlier that day.

I looked at Daniel.

"He has cameras."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Where?"

I showed him the screen.

The picture was taken from inside David's office.

Daniel immediately looked around.

Then he walked toward the bookshelf.

He touched the edge of a wooden frame.

"There."

Behind the frame was a tiny black camera.

I stepped back.

"He was watching me."

Daniel nodded.

"Not just today."

I felt sick.

How long?

How many moments?

How many private conversations?

How many times had David watched me without me knowing?

Margaret covered her face.

"I didn't know."

I believed her.

But it didn't matter.

The damage was already done.

Daniel removed the camera.

Then he looked at me.

"You need to understand something."

"What?"

"David knows you found the letter."

My heart stopped.

"How?"

Daniel looked at the camera.

"Because he wanted you to find it."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"He didn't lose this evidence."

Daniel's voice became serious.

"He left it."

I shook my head.

"Why would he do that?"

Daniel looked at the photograph of my father.

"Because David has always enjoyed watching people discover the truth too late."

I felt anger rise inside me.

"Then why give me a chance to fight back?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because he doesn't think you can."

Those words hurt.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they sounded exactly like David.

He didn't see me as a threat.

He saw me as the wife who would stay quiet.

The woman who would take care of his parents.

The woman who would clean up the mess he created.

He had no idea who he had created.

I picked up the documents from the desk.

Then I looked at Daniel.

"Where do we start?"

For the first time, Daniel looked surprised.

"You still want to continue?"

I looked at him.

"My husband destroyed my marriage."

I held up the evidence.

"He lied about my father."

I placed the letter inside my bag.

"And he thought I was too weak to stop him."

I shook my head.

"He made the biggest mistake of his life."

Daniel watched me carefully.

Then he nodded.

"There's one place we need to go."

"Where?"

"The apartment."

I knew immediately.

Claire's apartment.

The secret life David built.

"What is there?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Something David doesn't know we found."

Before I could answer, my phone vibrated again.

Not from David.

Not from an unknown number.

From Claire.

One message.

A location.

And four words.

"Please come alone. Urgent."

I looked at Daniel.

He saw my expression.

"What happened?"

I turned the screen toward him.

His face changed instantly.

"Don't go."

"Why?"

Daniel stood up.

"Because Claire has never contacted you before."

I stared at the message.

Then another message appeared.

This time with a photo.

A photo of someone standing outside the apartment building.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should not have been alive.

Daniel looked at the image.

His face went pale.

"Eleanor..."

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

May you like

Daniel slowly whispered the name.

And the moment he said it, the office door handle began to turn from the outside.
